4. IN 1906 EMILY JOINED THE WSPU
• Women’s Social and
Political Union.
• Started by Emmeline
Pankhurst
• WSPU wanted votes for
women.
• It was willing to use
violence.
5. • Emily had to leave when her mother could not
afford the £20 a term fees. Emily then worked
as a governess till she had raised enough
money to return to university. In 1895, after
graduating with a first class honours degree in
English Language and Literature from London
University, she became a teacher in schools in
Edgbaston, then in Worthing and
subsequently she taught privately.
7. • In 1906, she joined the Women's Social and
Political Union (WSPU), founded by Emmeline
Pankhurst. Three years later she gave up her
job as a teacher and went to work full-time for
the suffragette movement. She was frequently
arrested for acts ranging from causing a public
disturbance to burning post boxes and spent a
number of short periods in jail.
