A recent study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science and featured on the SCC website focused on a new potential treatment for patients with striae distensae (SD). These linear dermal scars result from a progressive tearing or stretching of the dermal layer. Also known as stretch marks, they can be related to pregnancy, teenage growth spurts, sudden weight gain, or rapid muscle growth from weightlifting. The topical formulation studied is a silicone-based cream that contains vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and selective synthetic recombinant human growth factors. The 22 recruited subjects all had SD alba and applied the cream laterally to half of their SD twice daily for a month. The results were that 86.4 percent of subjects reported improved SD appearance and texture, with more than 90 percent experiencing no tolerance issues. For 9.1 percent of participants, mild redness or itching was reported over the first two days, which then subsided. With 3-D imaging obtained at baseline and after a month, independent evaluators also graded the appearance. The evaluators confirmed the effectiveness of the formulation, with an improvement in 72.7 percent of SD cases reported, compared to 36.3 percent improvement in striae distensae that went untreated.
