3. Why Angioplasty/CABG is prescribed ?
• If you’ve ever had a heart attack or recurring
angina, chances are you’ve either had or been
recommended to have an angioplasty .
• This procedure involves inflating a balloon on
the tip of a catheter inserted into a narrowed
artery.
• It is also a popular therapy for many who are
suffering with angina and for asymptomatic
patients with blockages in the coronary arteries.
3
4.
5. When it serves good ?
• Angioplasty is best done within 12 hours after a
heart attack, but at least a third of patients are
not treated within that time frame.
• Nevertheless, “late” angioplasty is routinely
performed on the assumption that it provides
benefit.
• This procedure doesn't open the blocked arteries,
and it does nothing to reverse the build up of
plaque which clogs the arteries.
• It only provides an alternate route for blood to
reach the heart muscles.
5
6. Statistics
• In 1980, coronary by-pass surgery made up less than
10% of the work that was done by a cardiac surgeon.
Today it is more than 60%.1
• Every year more than 25000 bypass surgeries are
conducted in India.1 (2001 Data)
• Of these, many patients will become candidates for a
second, and sometimes a third by-pass operation. It is
important to understand that the original cause of the
problem is not changed by this surgery.

7. Risk factors associated with Bypass
• A large, multi-center study published in the New
England Journal of Medicine revealed that when
angioplasty was done three to 28 days after a
heart attack, it failed to reduce the occurrence of
death, repeat heart attacks, or heart failure. 2
• Even worse, during four years of follow-up there
were more heart attacks in the group that had
angioplasty, compared to those treated
conservatively with drugs.2

infarction. N Engl J Med. 2006 Dec 7;355;23:2395–2407

8. So what is next ?
• Lets speak some facts !!!
Factor Lifestyle Angioplasty Bypass

closure
None 30% 20%
Brain Dysfunction None None 15%
Atherosclerosis

or slowed down
yes No No
Complications
(During)
None 5% 5%
Death (Elderly,
During )
None 15 2%
Costing None or Less 50000 and more 1- 1.5 lakhs

9. Standards for stent implants
• Stents are safe and effective only when used as
originally approved: in patients with one blocked
artery and no significant heart damage.(FDA)
• Well over half of all drug-eluting stents are
implanted in patients who do not meet these
criteria.
• This criteria is not followed, so those recipients of
Stent are compelled to take Plavix(Clopidogrel), a
drug that helps prevent blood clots, for the rest
of their lives at a cost of $1,400 a year.
9
10. Treatment is worse than disease
• Rates of heart attack and death from heart
disease were no lower in patients who had
surgery than they were in a similar group of
patients treated without surgery.
• Angioplasty, bypass, and other invasive heart
procedures not only do not, but cannot,
prevent heart attacks or prolong lives in the
vast majority of patients who have them.
10
11. How to reverse the heart disease?
First step is understanding what are the things
damaging coronary artery:
1. High blood cholesterol levels.
2. Excessive dietary cholesterol and saturated
fats.
3. High Blood pressure.
4. Nicotine
11
12. Excesses cholesterol
• Most of us are living on cholesterol lowering
drugs. Eg. Lovastatin one of the common
drugs which in turn gives you cataract and
liver damage.
• Cholesterol drugs are those who don’t want to
change their life style.
• Elevated cholesterol levels are one of the
major reasons for atherosclerosis.
12
13. High blood pressure
• High BP increases the chances of CAD.
• Repeated intake of antihypertensive drugs will
not reduce the actual cause. Its just controls
the blood pressure.
• Taking antihypertensive drugs are one of the
major reasons for impotence or reduced
sexual vigor.
• So lifestyle modification is one of the good
alternative to control your blood pressure.
13
14. Nicotine
• We all know cigarette smoking causes cancer,
but the heart disease due to cigarettes are
more familiar than lung cancer.
• Nicotine is absorbed in the arteries which will
cause constriction of coronary arteries which
will cause CAD.
14
15. Reversal: Step 1
Open your heart
15
• Half of the problem is with in you
• Reduce your emotional stress
• Open your heart to others
• Be pleased for others to approach you
• Open your heart to higher self
• Maintain mental harmony, reduce stress.
16. Reversal: Step 1
Open your heart..contd
• 20 mins of stretches
• 15 mins of relaxation technique
• 5 mins of breathing techniques
• 15 mins of meditation
• 5 mins of directed or receptive imagery of heart
16
17. Stretches
• Stretches are controlled movements derived
from Hatha yoga.
• The first step towards experiencing inner
peace and healing is to relax your body.
• When you stretch chronically tensed muscles,
slowly and gently..it allows your body to relax.
17
28. Are you lazy or no time..some office
stretches
28
29. Are you lazy or no time..some office
stretches
29
30. Breathing exercises
• We respond to the stress by holding our
breathing, when the stress become chronic we
may develop severe breathing troubles.
• Do you breath from your chest or diaphragm ?
• Place your right hand on the chest and left
hand on your abdomen. Breath in and out, if
your right hand is rising more it suggests an
active chest breathing and vice versa.
• Most of us breath from our chest which
gradually makes us diseased.
30
31. Abdominal breathing
31
1. Place you right hand on chest and left
hand on the abdomen.
2. Sit with erect spine.
3. Concentrate on your abdomen start
inhaling deeply, only your left hand
should rise more than your right.
4. Exhale out in same fashion.
33. Meditation
Focusing
• Breathing
• Some sounds
(AUM)
Mindfullness
&
Self- analysis
• Observe your
feelings
• Control it
Prayer
• Just merge
yourself to
your beloved
33
35. Carbs,Protien & Fat
• Most of us consume 40 to 50 % of calories
through fat.
• People belive carbohydrates makes you fat but
actually it is the fat making you fat.
• 1 gm fat = 9 calories
• 1 gm of carbohydrate or protien = 4 calories
• Reverse your diet that you are getting only 10
percent of calories as fat.
35
36. Reversal diet
• Very low in fat
• Has less than 10% calories from fat
• Excludes food high in saturated fat
{Avocados(alpukat/ makan phal),nuts, seeds}
• High in fiber
• Excludes all oils and all animal products.
• Allows egg white.
• Excludes caffeine, MSG and other stimulants
• Moderate use of salt.
36
37. Reversal diet
• Intake more complex carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits,
grains, beans)
• Alcohol, and sugar are empty calories which is
closely associated with other cholesterol and
saturated fat products like cake and ice creams.
• A meal of rice and beans provides you complete
protien, you don’t have to depend upon animal
protiens.
• Its all about eating grains and legumes(kadu
dhaniya) sometime during the same day.
37
38. Cholesterol facts
• Your blood cholesterol comes from two
places:
1. From the animal products
2. Your body manufactures cholesterol from the
saturated fat you eat.
• Increasing cholesterol is the main risk factor
for all CAD.
• All fat is comprised of three components.
Saturated fatty acids, MUFA,PUFA.
38
39. Cholesterol facts
All oils are 100% fat. One table spoon of oil
contains fourteen grams of total fat.
(per 1 tea spoon)
()
39
40. Cholesterol facts
• People believe adding olive oil or corn oil to
their diet will lower the cholesterol level
which is not true.
• Adding any oil to your diet will increase your
cholestrol.
• Olive and safflower oil which is not “good” for
you but they are less “bad” for you.
40
42. Diet contd…
• But little oil intake is allowed in prevention
diet.
• “If you cant be a vegetarian yourself then eat
a vegetarian”
• Avoid 5 “whites” in your diet.(Salt, Sugar,
maida, rice, Milk )
42
45. Quit smoking
• Write down in a paper why you want to quit
smoking!
• Keep plenty of raw fruits with you and start
eating it when you get an urge to smoke!
• Find a friend to quit smoking with you!
• Avoid the occasions where you will be
tempted to smoke!
45
Quitting smoking is
a process, everyone
will not succeed for
the first time.
Try ! Try ! Try!
