Gnanadurai Hospital Newsletter dec - 2011
1. Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. May our Good Lord bless
and guide each one of us, during this Christmas season. May THE CHRIST CHILD, help us to live
among our people, as HE lived among us. May HE bring us new joys, and strength to cope with our
pressures and sorrows? And as we enter the New Year, may our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ use each
one of us – empty and broken vessels - to be a blessing to those who touch our lives every day.
THE TRUST: During the last one year, we have made major changes in the Trust. Three
new Trustees have been officially included. Mr. Edwardraj, local business man and
children’s ministry worker in Sivakasi, Mr. Faith Ragland, Physiotherapist, who has
recently moved over to Coimbatore from Karakonam, and Mrs. Beulah Chandrasekar of
Family Foundation, Vellore, are now officially Trustees. This major change had been
necessitated by the sudden demise of our former Chairman, Mr. S.A.C. Jeyakumar, in
April, 2010. Dr. Ebenezer Solomon Osmund is the new Chairman. Mr. Angelo
Gnanadurai takes over as the Secretary of the Trust, and Dr. Giovanni Gnanadurai,
becomes the Treasurer of the Trust. Two others – Mr. Vasanth Davis, a sales executive
based in Bengaluru, and Dr. (Mrs.) Darjula Selvakumar, a practicing Dentist in
Thoothukudi, - could not become Trustees during the last meeting, since they could not
be present due to personal reasons.
We have been working on our Vision and Mission statements. After
prolonged discussion and debates during the last two meetings, they were left alone for
further corrections before finalizing them. We are attaching them separately and those
who have the time and knowledge on these matters are welcome to send in their
comments.
We should start working towards FCRA, (Foreign contribution regulation
act) and 80-G (for receiving larger corporate donations), registrations with the
government. Everyone is tied up with their own work, but we have to somehow find the
time and energy to put thro’ these two papers and pursue them to the best of our ability.
Financially, we are surplus at this point of time, in spite of major
constructions in Meadows High School, which have been managed without any loans.
All previously existing loans have been paid back; we normally like to continue without
any major loans, as a policy of the Trust.
GNANADURAI HOSPITAL: The Day is begun with daily devotions in the roof-top chapel. This is
followed by prayers in the wards, which is more patient oriented. There is another daily devotion for the
sweepers in the afternoon. We are aware that a lot more needs to be done to improve the quality of all
this work. We also need to do a lot to improve the relationships among the staff, which is hitting rock
bottom at present. Please remember us in your prayers as we struggle along in these areas.
On the patient front also, we need to do a lot more work towards
touching the lives of the patients. There has not been a single HIV positive mother detected in more
than 2 years now, in all ANC screening. Just this week, one positive mother has conceived again with her
second child and would like to continue the pregnancy. Again, there are lots of areas where patients’
lives can be touched and we have to plan and move ahead in this area also.

The clinical work goes on. The government has sustained its efforts to attract the people to the
PHCs, and Government Hospitals for delivery, and so our case load continues to steadily decline (as the
bar chart will show). By GOD’s grace, in spite of this, we have managed to attract so many patients. We
are also learning to work with the government, to suit individual patient requirement and preference.
This is in spite of the fact, that a few government officials (well meaning ones) think, that we are in
competition with the government.
The new hospital software (swiftware) is constantly being updated. There is lots of
scope for improvement in the patient front. Also, computerization offers lots of scope for research
which is also uniquely possible because of the large volume of our work. Unfortunately there are not
enough junior doctors to use this for their benefit also. As it is, we are again without any junior doctor at
this point of time, since Diana left in May-June, as she is getting married.
The new Ultrasound machine is functioning well; the old one is put to good use also in
the OPD itself, for taking small quick decisions. But Doppler Ultrasound, as I am (Gio), increasingly
realizing, is a whole new area. And I do not think that I have the time, and more importantly the
aptitude at this point of time in my life. I firmly believe that GOD is calling me into spiritual areas in the
lives of the people than into technical ones. We have also more recently acquired a c-pap, which is a
neonatology equipment, somewhat less than a ventilator, but is functionally usable in similar, simpler
situations. Our paediatrician does not still feel ready for a ventilator as yet.
We are still praying that GOD will bring the right people to work with us, in HIS own
sweet time. We are also slowly planning for a small nursing school. Mrs. Angela Gnanadurai has started
doing ground work for the same.
3. RAGLAND SCHOOL: Since the school has been doing well during the recent years, and is financially
almost attaining parity with running costs, we are seriously exploring upgrading the school into a high
school, year by year, starting June, 2012. The more difficult area will be financing the infrastructure
necessary, the buildings and the furniture, and other incidental expenses, during the first few years.
The school has 24 teachers and 5 non teaching staff at present. Staff
were encouraged at the beginning of the academic year, by a good salary hike. A staff picnic was also
arranged. A new office room, and a staff room are also being created.
During the current year, special communicative English classes have
been arranged as most students come from a background without much parental support. We have to
plan to make a difference in the lives of all the children who go through the school, and their families in
the long term. Kindly continue to remember us in your prayers.

4. MEADOWS HIGH SCHOOL: The Meadows High School has been really doing well in
recent years. And the results in April 2011, reflected all the planning and the hard work
put in. 20/38 got 80%+, 17/38 got 60% +, and the last one got 55%+. We have to
keep it in mind, that many of these students came from poorly run primary schools,
without any sound foundation. There are 241 students, 11 teachers and 3 non-teaching
staff in the school at present.
We have added 4 + 4 class rooms on the two sides of
the existing 6 class rooms. These will have foldable wooden partitions, as in the
Ragland School. Sports infrastructure, furniture, library and laboratory are areas which
will need a lot more investments from our side.
The school has a kitchen, which does a lot to sustain
and improve the nutrition of the students. The kitchen is sustained on a lot of good will
and love, from a lot of volunteers from the villages around. They supply a lot of material
and the teachers have to do a lot of additional labour to keep the kitchen going. There
is a person, (one of the three non teaching staff), by name Meadows, who is probably in
his late 50’s; he is basically a gardener, but does a lot of work to sustain the kitchen
also. It shows that as late as in the 1950’s there had been people naming their children
after Meadows, who was a fellow missionary alongside Ragland.
The school is a bee-hive of activity also. The
entire student community spent an entire day to clean up an entire village. It was a new
experience for everyone concerned. The students interacted with the village elders in
an attempt to sustain the results of the work done; it was also a great time of mutual
learning and inspiration. There was a picnic, to a nearby dam. The students of 9th std.,
are getting ready to entertain the inmates of an orphanage in Madurai. A Christmas
program is getting ready. A major afforestation initiative is going on with the guidance
and support of the forest department. The scouts, the red-ribbon club, the guides, etc.
are all active in their own way.
We continue to guide all the students who pass out of
our school, in their further education; in fact we continue to be involved in guiding many
students and their families who are in other schools in town, doing their 11th and 12th
classes. We want to make a difference in the lives of all these children and their
families, socially, morally and spiritually. Kindly continue remember us in your prayers.

FAMILIES: We must say something about the families.
Karuna and I live alone here. Samuel, 25, lives in Delhi at present preparing for next
year’s UPSC exams. Daniel, 22, will be completing his Internship in March. After that,
he plans to move over to an EHA hospital – most probably Makunda or Raxaul.
Emerald lives with Barnabbas, 21, doing B.Sc. (Maths) in Sivakasi. Her husband,
Mr. Jeyakumar died suddenly on 30th October, even though he was recovering well from
brain surgery (removal of meningioma, on the optic chiasma).
Teresa is doing her M.Sc. (Nursing) in CMC, Vellore. She is EHA sponsored.
Chris and Raja live with their kids in Madurai, where Raja is doing his M.E.
Angelo and Angela live in the Ragland School campus. Jude is at present in Chennai,
preparing for another shot at CMC’s entrance exams, without really giving up much of
his musical dreams. Chickoo is back in her old school in Sivakasi for std. XI. Angela
continues to work in CSI Nursing College, Karakonam, South Kerala Diocese.
