Learning management system has emerged from auxiliary role to critical one in higher education. Present college students are technologically perceptive and demand their faculty to use technology and learning management systems. This paper explores the latest trends in this initiative and discusses the successful implementation of LMS in United Institute of Technology (UIT), Coimbatore. UIT persistently seeks and adopts innovative methods to equip the students with knowledge, skills and character to become competent engineers by facilitating the dynamic Learning Management System. This paper focuses exclusively on open source learning management system and impact of LMS in academic performance of the students in UIT and their utilization the LMS technology. This paper also suggests how to improve teaching and learning functions to improve the performance and acquisition of knowledge by using Learning Management System.

Role of Libraries and Librarians on Building LMS<br />To help the tutors in the development of collection (contents)<br />In providing value added services<br />Hyperlink the e-Resources with the library e – reference resources such as e-books and e-journals as well as with the web-based open-access resources<br />Designing the integrated web portal to provide friendly access of scholarly e-resources with efficient browsing and research abilities.<br />Organize e-literacy programs to develop e-learning information search skills<br />acquisition of core e-collection, especially that is recommended by e-learning initiative<br />Promotion of library e-services to the virtual e –learning community; and prompt <br /> document delivery and outreach services via electronic transmission & efficient helpful tools to support the instructor to create e-course.<br />Facilitation of scholarly communication and virtual classroom collaboration.<br />

Conclusion <br />The effect of the implementation of the LMS in UIT, showed that the Learning Management System has widely used and will continue to growing in UIT. <br />It is not only limited online environment, but also hybrid and web-enhanced teaching and learning environment.<br />LMS to facilitate interaction enhance learning abilities and support systematic learning, including problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. <br />Though LMS has been proven as beneficial to student learning environment. <br />Moodle is sufficient and successful to deliver the lecture notes and interaction which exists in a “real” class room environment<br />
