APA style is used in academic institutions because they promote consistency. Everyone using APA style to write a paper uses the same rules. So everyone reading an APA style paper knows where to find citations and other important things in the paper. APA Formatting is also used in academic institutions because it assures clarity, uniformity, and credibility. It helps to prevent plagiarism and encourages academic integrity and honesty.
There is more to APA format than just works cited. APA format, more officially known as the American Psychological Association, is one of two main documentation styles used in the United States. This format is traditionally used when writing natural or social sciences research papers, including Physiology, Linguistics, Sociology, Economics, Criminology, Business, and Nursing. It guides style, voice, and references for your paper. (Gorman, 2012).
When I first heard about APA style formatting, I thought its main use was to enable the teacher to read clearly and give marks. I later found out that APA style means a lot more. The most challenging thing for me about the APA style was how to arrange the reference page. I didn't know how to properly cite sources. For example, I didn't know the order in which the author's last name and the year of publication had to appear on the reference page. I watch many videos online about APA style formating and it helped me overcome the challenges I was facing.
Resources that are available to students that can be of assistance with APA style are the Herzing University library and the Purdue University Writing Lab.
