THE PROCLAMATION
OF THE GOSPEL [110]
5. III PREPARING TO PREACH (145-159)
Reverence for truth 146-8
Personalizing the Word 149-51
Spiritual Reading 152-3
An ear to the people 154-5
Homiletic Recourses 156-9
6. Preparation for preaching is so important a task that a
prolonged time of study, prayer, reflection
and pastoral creativity should be devoted to it. EG 145
7. El culto a la verdad
Because of this love, we can take as much time as we need,
like every true disciple: “Speak, Lord,
for your servant is listening” (1 S 3,9). EG 146
Reverence for truth
8. Even if we think we understand the words
translated into our own language,
this does not mean that we correctly understand
what the sacred author wished to say
EG 147
9. Certainly, to understand properly the meaning
of the central message of a text we need to
relate it to the teaching of the entire Bible
as handed on by the Church. EG 148
10. If we have a lively desire to be the first to hear the word which we must preach,
this will surely be communicated to God’s faithful people, for
“out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”(Mt 12,34). EG 149
Personalizing the word
11. preaching will consist in that activity,
so intense and fruitful, which is
“communicating to others what
one has contemplated”. EG 150
12. The Holy Spirit, who inspired the word,
“today, just as at the beginning of the Church,
acts in every evangelizer who allows himself
to be possessed and led by him.
The Holy Spirit places on his lips the words
which he could not find by himself”. EG 151
13. “Lectio divina” the reading of God’s word in a moment of prayer
and allowing it to enlighten and renew us EG 152
Spiritual Reading
14. “Lord, what does this text say to me?
What is it about my life that
you want to change by this text?
15. What is it about this word that
moves me? What attracts me?
Why does it attract me?” EG 153
16. He always invites us to take a step forward, but does not demand a full response
if we are not yet ready. He simply asks that we sincerely look at our life
and present ourselves honestly before him, and that we be willing to continue
to grow, asking from him what we ourselves cannot as yet achieve. EG 153
17. The preparation and preaching becomes an exercise in discerning the gospel,
where we try to recognise, by the light of the Spirit, “a call which God makes
in a particular historic situation and by which He calls the believer. EG 154
An ear to the people
18. The preacher also needs to keep his ear to the people
and to discover what it is that the faithful need to hear. EG 155
19. Concern for the way we preach is likewise a profoundly spiritual concern.
It entails responding to the love of God by putting all our talents
and creativity at the service of the mission which he has given us;
at the same time, it shows a fine, active love of neighbour. EG156
Homiletic resources
20. . A good homily, an old teacher once told me,
should have “an idea, a sentiment, an image.” EG 157
21. “the faithful… expect much from preaching,
and will greatly benefit from it,
provided that it is simple,
clear, direct, well-adapted”. EG 158
22. Another feature of a good homily is that it is positive.
It is not so much concerned with pointing out what shouldn’t be done,
but with suggesting what we can do better. EG 159
25. IV. Evangelization and the deeper understanding of the kerygma [160-175]
Kerygmatic and mystagogical catechesis [163-168]
Personal accompaniment in processes of growth [169-173]
Centred on the word of God [174-175]
26. IV Evangelization and the deeper understanding of the kerygma
The Lord’s missionary mandate includes a call to growth in faith:
“Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:20).
27. “The one who loves his neighbour has fulfilled the whole law…
therefore love of neighbour is the fulfilling of the law” (Rom 13:8, 10).
“For the whole law is fulfilled in one word,
‘you shall love your neighbour as yourself’”. Ga 5,14 EG 161
28. “May the Lord make you increase and
abound
in love for one another and for all” (1 Ts 3,12).
29. fulfil “the royal law according to the Scripture:
You shall love your neighbour as yourself” (James2:8)
30. The Father’s free gift which makes us his sons and daughters,
and the priority of the gift of his grace (cf. Eph 2:8-9; 1 Cor 4:7),
enable that constant sanctification which pleases God
and gives him glory. EG 162
31. Education and catechesis are at
the service of this growth. EG 163
Catechesi tradendae 1979
General Catechetical Directory 1997
Kerygmatic and mystagogical catechesis
32. The kerygma is trinitarian.
The fire of the Spirit is given in the form of tongues
and leads us to believe in Jesus Christ who,
by his death and resurrection, reveals and
communicates to us the Father’s infinite mercy. EG 164
33. The centrality of the kerygma calls for stressing
those elements which are most needed today:
It has to express God’s saving love which precedes
any moral and religious obligation on our part;
it should not impose the truth but appeal to freedom;
it should be marked by joy, encouragement,
liveliness and a harmonious balance EG 165
34. mystagogic initiation. - - -
a progressive experience of formation
involving the entire community
35. and a renewed appreciation of the liturgical
Signs of Christian initiation. EG 166
36. Proclaiming Christ means showing that
to believe in and to follow him is not only
something right and true, but also something
beautiful, capable of filling life
with new splendour and profound joy,
37. we should appear as joyful messengers
of challenging proposals, guardians of
the goodness and beauty which shine
forth in a life of fidelity to the Gospel. EG 168
38. Personal support in processes of growth
The pace of this support must be steady and reassuring,
reflecting our closeness and our compassionate gaze
which also heals, liberates and encourages growth
in the Christian life.EG 168
39. To accompany them would be counterproductive
if it became a sort of therapy supporting their self-absorption
and ceased to be a pilgrimage with Christ to the Father.EG 170
40. Today more than ever we need men and women who,
on the basis of their experience of accompanying others,
are familiar with processes which call for prudence,
understanding, patience and docility to the Spirit,
so that they can protect the sheep from
wolves who would scatter the flock EG 171
41. Our personal experience of being accompanied
and assisted, and of openness to those who
accompany us, will teach us to be patient and
compassionate with others, and to find the right
way to gain their trust, their openness and their
readiness to grow. EG 172
42. Genuine spiritual accompaniment always
begins and flourishes in the context of
service to the mission of vangelization.
Ej. St Paul to Timothy (Tt 1,5; cf. 1 Tm 1,3-5), EG 173
43. Centred on the word of God
God’s word, listened to and celebrated, above all in the Eucharist,
nourishes and inwardly strengthens Christians, enabling them
to offer an authentic witness to the Gospel in daily life. EG 174
44. It is essential that the revealed word radically enrich
our catechesis and all our efforts to pass on the faith. EG 175
45.
