16. Advice to Coaches (Harksen, 2020)
The most important factor in coaching is to be
yourself. A lot of coaches try to copy other coaches or
other programmes. There’s a lot of discussion on
whether a coach should be scientific or whether one
should coach as if it’s an art. Every coach should find
a personal way of coaching…… the way that is best
for oneself, because, first of all, coaching is the art of
communication.”
Gennadi Touretski, coach of Alexandre Popov, Michael Klim
and Ian Thorpe
17. Coaching calls upon many skills that are gained by the
combination of experience and knowledge, be take
care of too much overload by internet
Some of this knowledge can be learnt on coaching
courses, but means little without practical application
within the “coaching process”
Novice coaches can benefit from regularly working
alongside an experienced ‘mentor’ coach, no one is
born as a coach
Coaching is passion, fire and emotion, not a job!
