3. History of McDonald’s
• 1940: Restaurant opened by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald.
• 1948: Introduction of the "Speedee Service System
• 1953: The first McDonald's with the arches opened in Phoenix, Arizona in March 1953. The original
mascot of McDonald's was a man with a chef's hat on top of a hamburger-shaped head whose
name was "Speedee".
• 1961: McDonald's first filed for a U.S. trademark on the name "McDonald's" with the description
"Drive-In Restaurant Services", which continues to be renewed; the company filed for a trademark
on a new logo—an overlapping, double-arched "M" symbol.
• 1962: Golden Arches replaced Speedee as the company symbol
• 1965: A new mascot, Ronald McDonald, was introduced. The clown-like man having puffed out
costume legs appeared in advertising aimed at children.
• 1968: The company applied for a U.S. trademark.
• 1976: Kroc and the McDonald brothers feuded over control of the business, as documented in
Kroc's autobiography. The San Bernardino restaurant was demolished and the site was sold to
the Juan Pollo restaurant chain. This area now serves as headquarters for the Juan Pollo chain, as
well as a McDonald's and Route 66 museum. With the expansion of McDonald's into many
international markets, the company has become a symbol of globalization and the spread of
the American way of life. Its prominence has also made it a frequent topic of public debates
about obesity, corporate ethics, and consumer responsibility.
