3. I. What is Urbanization?
Urbanization refers to the population shift
from rural to urban areas, the decrease in the
proportion of people living in rural areas, and
the ways in which societies adapt to this
change.

5. II. What is the Urban Settlement?
• An urban settlement is where displaced
populations settle within agglomeration such as
a town or city. All urban settlements, especially
densely populated cities.

6. II. What is urban settlement?
• Central Business district
• Transitional Zone
• Zone of industry and working class
• Suburban zone
• Outer suburbs

7. III. What are the urban problems
and their solutions?
The urban problems:
• Housing
• Transportation
• Pollution
• Water supply
7/14/2020 7
8. III. Housing problems
• The cost rises that it can
make people in the middle
and upper income difficult
in coping with housing.
• There are no place available
for fresh immigrants to the
city.
• The squatter settlements are
illegally set up on the
vacant place.
7/14/2020 8
9. III. The solutions to housing
problem
• The government should
control the price of houses
in the city.
• The government should
provide subsidized public
housing by building low-
rise flats.
• The government should take
the steps to improve the
squatter settlements in the
cities.

10. IV. The problems of transport
• Roads are congested
with private cars,
commercial vehicles and
public transport system.
• The public transport
services cannot cope
with the number of
commuters.
7/14/2020 10
11. IV. The solutions of transport
• The government should
reduce the number of
vehicles by making car
ownership expensive affair.
• Improving the city’s
transport system.
• Make greater use of public
transport system
• Travel less often in the city.
• Maintain good condition of
vehicle7/14/2020 11
12. IV. The problems of pollution
• Air pollution is the most
serious urban pollutions.
• Water pollution causes
from the factories.
• Millions of city residents
generate tons and tons of
waste and garbage.
7/14/2020 12
13. IV. The solutions of pollution
Every individual
• Set an example to others. Do
not pollute the air by smoking,
littering or burning openly in
one’s compound.
• Caution one’s neighbors and
friends against willful disposal
of garbage in a haphazard
manner.
• Pass on the media such as TV,
radio…that is related to the
environmental protection
7/14/2020 13
The government
• Clean air law should be legislated
and strictly enforced to control the
emission of the exhaust from
vehicles and smoke from
factories.
• Heavy penalty should be meted to
factories that release to toxic
chemicals to the rivers which
cause water pollution.
• The government should work
hand in hand with environmental
groups or national conversation
bodies.
14. V. Water supply problems
1. The consumption of water: is enormously
large in all cities due to a rapid population
growth. Water is needed for drinking, cooking
and bathing…etc.
7/14/2020 14
15. V. Water supply problems
2. Most cities are confronted with water
shortage:
• Most countries have their industrial expansion
in major cities which pose a great strain on the
water shortage situation.
7/14/2020 15
16. V. Water supply problem
• In many developing countries, the
water supply is contaminated and may
not be drinkable unless properly
treated.
• In most cities, the land is so scarce and
expansive that it cannot be set aside for
building reservoirs or water-collecting
ponds.
7/14/2020 16
18. V. Water supply solutions
• More water treatment plants are to be constructed
in the city limits and it outskirts so that there is a
constant supply of treated, clean, piped water for
all the city residents.
• An elaborated network of aqueducts have been
built to ensure steady supply of water for domestic
and industrial purposes.
7/14/2020 18
19. V. Water supply solutions
• The water piped should be regular inspected to
minimize incidences of burst piped and water
wastages.
• Factories should recycle their industrial water for
repeated processing and cooling purposes.

20. IV. What is urban planning?
• Urban planning means
urban development is a
technical and political
process concerned with
the development and
design of land use and
built environment,
including air, water,
electricity.

21. IV. What is a new town?
• New town is a form of
urban planning designed
to relocate populations
away from large cities by
grouping homes,
hospitals, industry and
cultural, recreational,
and shopping centers to
form new communities.
