2. Learning Objectives
Explain what is meant by ‘fundamental motor skills’ and
give practical examples
Explain how these fundamental skills are measured and
analysed
3. Fundamental Motor Skills
When a sportsperson performs a skilful action, e.g.?
A football player performing a very skilful pass
They know this is a technically good movement, this is called a
‘motor skill’
Fundamental motor skills are skills like throwing, catching and
running, these are important because they form a basis for other
skills, they also help a person form a healthy lifestyle
These fundamental skills will also help a person follow lifetime
sports, e.g. golf
These will also help children to build self esteem and help them
to be accepted in ‘play’ situations.
5. Running
This is developed during the toddler years and is
the basis of many sports activities
Different techniques are used depending on you
trying to run fast, for short distances or longer
distance running.
Poor running technique can cause injury, whether
running recreationally or for a bus
Running well is a skill, not something you are born
with, so you learn how to do it
6. Running
Weaknesses in runners;
Bouncing up and down to much
Over striding
Not using their hamstrings enough
Landing on feet to heavily
Breaking action on landing
Not using arms
Twisting midriff side to side
Head and upper body bent fwd
Jogging too slowly
7. Running
Good runners run on the balls of their feet, in a
dorsiflexed position (toes pointing fwd not
downwards. The heel doesn’t touch the ground
Assessment of running in sport, is often in timing
100m – 9.69s (U Bolt), 10.49s (F Joyner)
Marathon – 2h4m26s (H Gebrselassie), 2h15m25s
(P Radcliffe)
9. Throwing
This fundamental motor skill is essential for many
physical activities, especially those with a ball
This involves throwing to a person, but also others, e.g.?
A tennis serve
Which sport has this in its purest form?
Track and field – what activities?
Discus, Javelin, Shot put and hammer
Most of the top athletes aren’t just about brute strength,
and aren’t massive, huge people, it is mostly about good
technique
Injury can occur with bad technique
13. Throwing
Over use injury can occur, as the same muscles are used
over and over again
Assessment of throwing is often through distance
Shot putt world records;
23.12m (R Barnes)
22.63m (N Lisovskaya)
Where else do you use throwing?
15. Kicking
Accuracy and correct technique are the most important
elements of this action
Football is the most popular sport to use kicking motor
skills, passing and shooting are the main kicking skills
used.
However bending the ball and overhead kicks are more
advanced kicking skills
How do you kick a football to get accuracy and power?
Instep of the foot (laces), follow through. The main
mistake is to use the toe to kick the ball
17. Jumping
This can be an event in its self; long jump or high jump.
But is also a basic requirement for many others
Long Jump:
Describe the long jump technique (P11)
World Records:
8.95m (M Powell), 7.52m (G Chistyakova)
19. Hitting
Very general fundamental skill
Used in many sports e.g?
Rounder's, cricket and tennis
Most of the sports involve using a hitting implement, so
co-ordination is important too. Boxing is slightly different,
as you try to hit the opponent
Hitting a tennis ball (P12)
