Attention of Focus
Got a minute? No!!
How many of you dread hearing “hey, do you have a minute?” You don’t dread it because you don’t like people, you dread it because a minute probably means and hour, and you are busy. The open door policy is great to have your people appreciate you are there for them, and in some cases it can be disempowering. Are we really doing our businesses and ourselves any favors with that policy.
Productivity actually goes down for the following reasons..
Your distractions increase: people are popping into your office on a regular basis to ask you questions, reducing the ability for you to get any work done. Constant interruptions make it difficult for you to focus and complete important projects often making extra hours the only way to get to the priorities of the day. Long term this leads to burnout and a lack of balance for you.
Creating dependency: People take on less empowerment by stopping by and asking questions and approvals along the way. You want people to work independently and rely on their consequential thinking, creativity and problem solving skills to move their projects forward. We are simple creatures and we seek the path of least resistance so many will take the easy way out and pop in on a regular basis to get that feedback and lean on you. By providing an environment where they can take the easy way out and avoid this responsibility you are actually disempowering them and stunting their opportunity for growth
Pass the buck culture. Often people will try to pass their monkey (problem) back to you. You need to make sure they leave with the monkey they came with. Be their coach and ask them a few questions and send them back with their monkey to solve their problem.
The answer: Schedule meetings to review peoples progress, use agendas and progress reports for them to organize their thoughts in a structured way and present the challenges and proposed solutions. Instead of giving answers, ask them questions.
Have open door hours so people know when they can pop in for questions.
Walk the floor, having coffee chat and give them social interaction they need so they don’t feel they need to get it throughout the day. That’s working smarter!
We will go into these three types of focus in detail in the modules to give you the basics and we will build upon them in the bootcamp. We will develop your ability to not only sharpen your 3 areas of focus but also to see how to influence others areas of focus to get greater performance from your team, support your children in their studies and even in improving your relationships at all levels. To really find outselves in that place of flow and create winds that build great momentum, we need to align the three types of focus. When these three are not in alignment it adds resistance to the flow and can in some cases even turn the winds against us.
