Miami Hurricanes Football Coaches In
Focus
Published on July 6, 2018
A critical aspect of an athletic team’s success is its head coach, who will outline the
strategy of the team and develop the players to their full potential. Here’s a quick profile
of some of the Miami Hurricane’s football coaches in its rich history.
Howard Schnellenberger
He’s the man known to have “built a fence around South Florida,” keeping rival coaches
from poaching Miami’s talent. He also made good on his promise to give the Magic
City a national championship in 1983. He led the team from 1979 to 1983, had two top-
10 finishes in five seasons, and established a clear blueprint for success at the
University of Miami.
Jimmy Johnson
This Texas-born coach arrived from Oklahoma State with a football mind that would
make his team a true college sensation. Under his watch, the University of Miami
became as well known for victories as they are for off-field controversies. He led from
1984 to 1988, had a 52-9 record, and won a national championship in 1987. He left
Miami to join Jerry Jones in breathing new life into the Dallas Cowboys.

Dennis Erickson
He came after Schnellenberger and Erickson, who tended to eclipse his own impressive
record and success of winning the most national championships and having the highest
winning percentage. He led the Canes from 1989 to 1994, had a 63-9 record, and won in
1989 and 1991. He is credited for keeping the strong momentum after Johnson left.
