Blogs – Ports and Intermodal capacity – Canada – July 2022
Canada has a lot of work to address issues with supply chain. Canada needs to partner with private sector on port and intermodal expansion. More inland and ocean ports require expansion as part of getting goods out of the ground to market.
CPC left in 2015 the government left policies that better supporting the goods-producing sector. Trudeau’s team decided to put little focus on expanding farming and natural resources exports. The primary goal of the Liberals was to create big government and focus one expensive on many social programs like child benefit. Canada gdp per capita has fallen as compared to it peers like Qatar and Australia. The USA has now grown to superpower in LNG.
Canada continues to push policies that will have impact on food security and costs.

4. Introduction
25% of Canada’s GDP is tied to trade
Liberals talked about getting goods to market, but have done little to get projects off the ground
Canada continues to drag it feet when it comes to integrated strategy on how best to expand
ports across Canada.
Canada needs to undertake both taxation and regulatory reforms.
5. Trade Analysis
Major Trade Deals
CETA (Europe) – Started by the CPC, but approved by LPC
Trans Pacific Partnership – Started by the CPC, but approved by LPC
6. Trade Analysis vs Key Commodity Prices
Blog – Critical Metals – Australia vs Canada
Australia is doing something about critical metals unlike Canada who continues to sit on the fence. Canada could be a world
leader in mining but @JustinTrudeau and @GMbutts felt keeping goods in the ground was best for their climate agenda

China continues to control vast reserves of critical metals.
After nearly 7 years of Liberal govt there is still no active LI mine in CAN.
Little is be said about cobalt mining practices in the Congo, why?

8. LNG
Summary:
Natural gas prices continue to rise
30 municipalities in Ontario are pushing for a ban of
natural gas
Ontario is set to retire Pickering Nuclear station and
needs to find new power sources
EMEA is desperate for new natural gas sources.
USA is global leader in LNG exports

Many governments continue to push their clean agenda at all
costs. Inflation is at all-time high that is forcing central banks to
raise interest rates. The last time there was this high inflation

More needs to be done to mitigate the impact of forest and wildfires.
All levels of government need to redefine their land use policies.
Trees are a natural carbon sink. Canada has large portion of its land made up of vegetation like forests.

There are risks and challenges with hydrogen including its environmental impact
and its production cycle (fossil fuels, water, etc.)
https://www.slideshare.net/paulyoungcga/the-future-of-hydrogen-october-2021
Risks
1. In the atmosphere, ozone and water vapour react with sunlight to produce
what are known as hydroxyl radicals. These powerful oxidants react with and
help remove other chemicals released into the atmosphere via natural and
human processes, such as burning fossil fuels. One of these chemicals is
methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
2. Our understanding so far suggests that if a hydrogen economy replaced the
fossil fuel-based energy system and had a leakage rate of 1%, its climate
impact would be 0.6% of the fossil fuel system. But we need to better
understand the hydrogen cycle, such as how land surfaces absorb hydrogen.
In the meantime, we must try to minimise leakage of hydrogen in production,
storage and use. Source https://theconversation.com/dont-rush-into-a-

Issues at hand for Canada
• Canada is moving to slow with getting goods to market
• C69 will hinder expansion of natural resources - https://globalnews.ca/news/4969319/pipeline-rally-bill-
c69-saskatchewan-conservative/
• Liberals have focused on adding more regulations and taxes. FDI is down due to Canada being less
competitive - http://www.mining.com/web/headwinds-horizon-canadian-mining-industry-official-warns/
“In 2017, investments in mining accounted for 37% of total foreign direct investment (FDI) in Australia, a
share worth nearly $300 billion. The same year, mining-related FDI into Canada was worth just over $28
billion, or 2.5% of total Canadian FDI. Australia has also overtaken Canada as the world’s second-largest
mining supplier. ”
• Canada GDP has been facing many challenges even before COVID19 -
