Canada heads to a very difficult time with a government that solely focus on its progressive agenda and climate change. The government continues push forward with new programs despite a structural deficit that has not been addressed since the December 2019.
What is next for Canada's Natural Resources
The total value of shipments of minerals showed a decrease in April, followed by two consecutive monthly increases. The total value of minerals shipped declined 17.6% in April to $3.47 billion from March, driven by a decrease in metallic minerals. In May, the total value of shipments of minerals rose 4.7% to $3.63 billion, led by an increase in the value of shipments of both metallic and non-metallic minerals. Finally, the value of shipments of metallic minerals saw a large increase (+10.3%) in June, which more than offset a slight decrease in non-metallic minerals. This resulted in an 8.4% increase of the total value of shipments of minerals.
Overall, the total value of shipments of minerals nearly doubled in the second quarter of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020. Higher shipment values for gold, iron ore and copper were mainly responsible for the gain.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) edged up 0.1% in September, as declines largely concentrated in manufacturing, construction and retail trade were more than offset by broad-based expansions in services-producing industries as well as in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction.
Preliminary information indicates that real GDP rebounded in October, up 0.8% with increases in most sectors. Manufacturing led the growth after contracting in September due in part to the effects of the semiconductor shortage. Other notable increases were in public sector, construction, finance and insurance, and transportation and warehousing. Because of its preliminary nature, this estimate will be revised on December 23, with the release of the official GDP data for the October reference month.
Overall, 12 of 20 industrial sectors were up in September, with growth in services-producing industries (+0.4%) more than offsetting a decline in goods-producing industries (-0.6%).
The continued global shortage of semiconductors and other supply chain disruptions markedly affected manufacturing and sales activity at a number of automotive-related industries across different industrial sectors in September.

Employment and Labour Market| Canada| November 2021
Employment rose by 154,000 (+0.8%) in November and was 186,000 (+1.0%) higher than its pre-COVID February 2020 level. The unemployment rate fell to 6.0%, within 0.3 percentage points of what it was in February 2020.
Employment increased in both the services-producing and goods-producing sectors in November. Both full-time (+80,000; +0.5%) and part-time (+74,000; +2.1%) work increased, and employment gains were spread across six provinces.
Total hours worked increased 0.7% and returned to the pre-pandemic February 2020 level for the first time. Hours rose across most industries, led by manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, as well as construction. Despite increasing in November, hours in the goods-producing sector were still below their pre-pandemic level (-3.6%). All of the growth compared with February 2020 was in the services-producing sector (+1.3%), most notably in professional scientific and technical services (+12.5%).

The future of Hydrogen
Hydrogen is considered a likely way to decarbonize industries that are hard to electrify, such as heavy transport or machinery.
O’Regan said the clean-burning fuel could provide up to 30 per cent of Canada’s energy needs by 2050. He said it could be an industry worth $50 billion and could provide 350,000 jobs.

Production:
Today, 95% of hydrogen is produced either from wood or from fossil fuels, such as natural gas and oil. Three types of production process are currently in use:
• The most common hydrogen production process is natural gas reforming — sometimes called steam methane reforming because it uses high-temperature steam. When exposed to steam and heat , the carbon (C) atoms of methane (CH4) separate. After two successive reactions, they reform separately to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide (co₂) ). This operation therefore requires natural gas.
• Another process is charcoal gasification1. Charcoal consists mainly of carbon and water. Burned in a reactor at a very high temperature of between 1,200 and 1,500 °C, the charcoal releases gas that separates and reforms to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO).
• Hydrogen can also be produced using electricity , through electrolysis of water. An electric current is used to split water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2). This method is not as cost-effective as using fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced by steam methane reforming costs around €1.5 per kilogram at the plant gate (excluding distribution costs), triple the cost of natural gas. Hydrogen produced using electrolysis is currently around four times more expensive, even before the cost of the electricity required is factored in.

1. In the atmosphere, ozone and water vapour react with sunlight to produce what are known as hydroxyl radicals. These powerful oxidants react with and help remove other chemicals released into the atmosphere via natural and human processes, such as burning fossil fuels. One of these chemicals is methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
2. Our understanding so far suggests that if a hydrogen economy replaced the fossil fuel-based energy system and had a leakage rate of 1%, its climate impact would be 0.6% of the fossil fuel system. But we need to better understand the hydrogen cycle, such as how land surfaces absorb hydrogen. In the meantime, we must try to minimise leakage of hydrogen in production, storage and use. GDP | Canada| Analysis and Commentary| November 2021
Both services-producing (+0.6%) and goods-producing (+0.5%) industries were up, as 17 of 20 industrial sectors posted increases in November.
Advance information indicates that real GDP for December was essentially unchanged. Widespread increases led by the manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, utilities and wholesale trade sectors were offset by declines in the accommodation and food services, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction and retail trade sectors. This advance information for real GDP by industry indicates a 1.6% uptick in the fourth quarter of 2021 and a rebound of 4.9% in the year following the pandemic-induced decline observed in 2020. Given their preliminary nature, these estimates will be updated on March 1, 2022 with the release of the official GDP data for December and the fourth quarter of 2021.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) edged up 0.1% in September, as declines largely concentrated in manufacturing, construction and retail trade were more than offset by broad-based expansions in services-producing industries as well as in mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction.
Preliminary information indicates that real GDP rebounded in October, up 0.8% with increases in most sectors. Manufacturing led the growth after contracting in September due in part to the effects of the semiconductor shortage. Other notable increases were in public sector, construction, finance and insurance, and transportation and warehousing. Because of its preliminary nature, this estimate will be revised on December 23, with the release of the official GDP data for the October reference month.
Overall, 12 of 20 industrial sectors were up in September, with growth in services-producing industries (+0.4%) more than offsetting a decline in goods-producing industries (-0.6%).
The continued global shortage of semiconductors and other supply chain disruptions markedly affected manufacturing and sales activity at a number of automotive-related industries across different industrial sectors in September.

Employment rose by 154,000 (+0.8%) in November and was 186,000 (+1.0%) higher than its pre-COVID February 2020 level. The unemployment rate fell to 6.0%, within 0.3 percentage points of what it was in February 2020.
Employment increased in both the services-producing and goods-producing sectors in November. Both full-time (+80,000; +0.5%) and part-time (+74,000; +2.1%) work increased, and employment gains were spread across six provinces.
Total hours worked increased 0.7% and returned to the pre-pandemic February 2020 level for the first time. Hours rose across most industries, led by manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, as well as construction. Despite increasing in November, hours in the goods-producing sector were still below their pre-pandemic level (-3.6%). The future of Hydrogen
Hydrogen is considered a likely way to decarbonize industries that are hard to electrify, such as heavy transport or machinery.
O’Regan said the clean-burning fuel could provide up to 30 per cent of Canada’s energy needs by 2050. He said it could be an industry worth $50 billion and could provide 350,000 jobs.

Today, 95% of hydrogen is produced either from wood or from fossil fuels, such as natural gas and oil. Three types of production process are currently in use:
• The most common hydrogen production process is natural gas reforming — sometimes called steam methane reforming because it uses high-temperature steam. When exposed to steam and heat , the carbon (C) atoms of methane (CH4) separate. After two successive reactions, they reform separately to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide (co₂) ). This operation therefore requires natural gas.
• Another process is charcoal gasification1. Charcoal consists mainly of carbon and water. Burned in a reactor at a very high temperature of between 1,200 and 1,500 °C, the charcoal releases gas that separates and reforms to produce hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO).
• Hydrogen can also be produced using electricity , through electrolysis of water. An electric current is used to split water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2). This method is not as cost-effective as using fossil fuels. Hydrogen produced by steam methane reforming costs around €1.5 per kilogram at the plant gate (excluding distribution costs), triple the cost of natural gas. Hydrogen produced using electrolysis is currently around four times more expensive, even before the cost of the electricity required is factored in.

1. In the atmosphere, ozone and water vapour react with sunlight to produce what are known as hydroxyl radicals. These powerful oxidants react with and help remove other chemicals released into the atmosphere via natural and human processes, such as burning fossil fuels. One of these chemicals is methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
2. Our understanding so far suggests that if a hydrogen economy replaced the fossil fuel-based energy system and had a leakage rate of 1%, its climate impact would be 0.6% of the fossil fuel system. But we need to better understand the hydrogen cycle, such as how land surfaces absorb hydrogen. In the meantime, we must try to minimise leakage of hydrogen in production, storage and use. Both services-producing (+0.6%) and goods-producing (+0.5%) industries were up, as 17 of 20 industrial sectors posted increases in November.
Advance information indicates that real GDP for December was essentially unchanged. Widespread increases led by the manufacturing, agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, utilities and wholesale trade sectors were offset by declines in the accommodation and food services, mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction and retail trade sectors. This advance information for real GDP by industry indicates a 1.6% uptick in the fourth quarter of 2021 and a rebound of 4.9% in the year following the pandemic-induced decline observed in 2020. Given their preliminary nature, these estimates will be updated on March 1, 2022 with the release of the official GDP data for December and the fourth quarter of 2021.

Homebuilders are walking a fine line when it comes to new projects as high mortgage rates curb demand.
New residential construction, including single-family homes and multifamily, dropped 11.3% month over month in August to 1.283 million units on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to Census Bureau data released Tuesday. That's down 14.8% compared with a year ago and well below the 1.44 million units economists surveyed by Bloomberg projected.
But authorized residential permits — an indicator of potential future activity — rose 6.9% to 1.543 million permits in August from July. That was still down 2.7% from last August. Single-family permits, though, were up 2% from July to 949,000. Multifamily permits came in at 535,000.
The data reflects two opposing forces builders are trying to balance: the ongoing need for new construction to fill in limited inventory and elevated mortgage rates that are hurting their biggest customer right now, the first-time homebuyer.
"High mortgage rates are clearly taking a toll on builder confidence and consumer demand, as a growing number of buyers are electing to defer a home purchase until long-term rates move lower," Robert Dietz, chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders, said Monday in a press release after builder confidence dropped for the second straight month.

New orders for manufacturing technology in the United States totaled $353.9 million in July 2023, as per the latest report by AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This figure marked a 12.4% decline from June 2023 but remained only 10.5% lower than July 2022. Year-to-date orders amounted to $2.83 billion, reflecting a 12.7% decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
Douglas K. Woods, President of AMT, noted that July is typically a slower month for manufacturing technology orders, so a slight drop was expected. However, he pointed out a notable trend: over the last two months, the year-to-date order gap has narrowed during historically slow periods. While job shops have seen decreased orders, other industries that benefited from reshoring or government investments have helped fill the gap.
Among specific sectors, job shops, the largest customer segment, placed their lowest total monthly orders since August 2020. In contrast, metal valve manufacturers recorded their third-highest monthly order value on record, last seen in September 2018, making up nearly 5% of the total manufacturing technology order value for July 2023. Manufacturers of motor vehicle transmissions continued to order machinery at an elevated pace. However, the aerospace industry continued to order below its early 2022 peaks, with hopes that recent projects like the federal government's $1.5 billion investment in communications satellites might reverse this trend.

Stocks fell Friday as investors wrap up a volatile week ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting.
The Dow Jones Industrials tumbled 288.87 points to close out Friday and the week at 34,618.24. At its lows, it completely wiped out Thursday's 332-point rally.
The S&P 500 index sank 54.78 points, or 1.2%, to 4,450.32.
The NASDAQ index plunged 217.72 points, or 1.6%, to 13,708.33.
The Dow held onto a winning week. The S&P 500 and NASDAQ both closed out the week with losses.
Information technology was the worst-performing sector in the S&P 500, down nearly 2%. Adobe shares fell more than 4% even after the software firm posted better-than-expected quarterly results. Shares of Arm Holdings were lower one day after its successful public debut.
Auto stocks General Motors and Stellantis N.V. were higher Friday, while Ford Motor was about flat. Thousands of members of the United Auto Workers went on strike after failing to reach a deal with the automakers Thursday night.
Elsewhere, Lennar shares slid 3%. The home construction firm posted third-quarter results that beat on the top and bottom lines.
On the economic front, the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey showed one-year inflation expectations dropped to 3.1% in
September, tied for the lowest since January 2021. Also, the five-year outlook fell to 2.7%, matching its lowest since December 2020.

Burning coal—for electricity, as well as metallurgy and cement production—is the world’s single largest source of CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, its use in electricity generation has actually grown 91.2% since 1997, the year when the first global climate agreement was signed in Kyoto, Japan.
However, even as non-renewables enjoy their time in the sun, their days could be numbered.
