Blog – How to build a Resilient Supply Chain – Canada – October 2022
In 2015 is when Justin Trudeau that Canada should be know for its resourcefulness - https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-davos-future-look-economy-harper-1.3412182.
Canada natural resources would have been a global leader in areas like Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, oil, LNG, etc., if Trudeau had focus on the goods-producing sector with balance policies that would protect the environment as well develop natural resources in a sustainable way. Canada could have learned a lesson or two from Australia - https://financialpost.com/diane-francis/diane-francis-canada-need-only-look-to-australia-to-see-how-badly-liberals-have-messed-up
Canada should be a world leader in the development on LNG but the Liberals chose excessive regulations and taxes that have caused issues with FDI for LNG - https://financialpost.com/commodities/energy/oil-gas/lng-canada-second-chance-global-lng-leader-takes-shape. Harper provided policies that would have developed Canada into a LNG giant, but Trudeau decided that was not going to be his focus area - https://financialpost.com/commodities/energy/canada-to-reduce-taxes-for-lng-projects-stephen-harper-says
Railroads have complained about capacity issues to federal government - https://financialpost.com/transportation/rail/a-burning-alberta-bridge-stalls-grain-shipments-showing-the-fragility-of-canadas-supply-chains
Liberals did little to expand ports. Thunder Bay could have been a major transportation hub like other ports including Sydney, NS or Sault Ste. Marie or Churchill, MB - https://financialpost.com/transportation/rail/a-burning-alberta-bridge-stalls-grain-shipments-showing-the-fragility-of-canadas-supply-chains
I have been saying for many years that the federal government was not doing enough to build a resilient supply chain including reshoring of manufacturing jobs, development of natural resources in a sustainable way, support farmers in terms expert/vertical farming while helping to keep a lid on input costs
Trudeau ran on 2015 on making things better for Canadians. It is now seven years later, and Trudeau policies have been nothing but a failure! - https://www.slideshare.net/paulyoungcga/justin-trudeau-era-of-canada-october-2015-to-august-2022pptx

Hydrogen is becoming a preferred option as
part of moving away from fossil fuels. Renewal
projects such as solar and wind farms are now
looking at producing hydrogen,
There are still challenges including the
movement of hydrogen to export markets and
fueling stations/power plant.
Safety issues are very key! Local fire
departments/services will need proper training
and equipment to fight hydrogen fires.
The capital spending requires to develop
hydrogen is well over $500B. Oil and Natural
Gas companies are looking at ways to produce
green hydrogen as part of the electrolysis
process.

wood product (-7.2%) and aerospace product and parts (-16.8%) industries. Meanwhile,
sales of motor vehicles (+13.8%) and chemical products (+6.0%) increased the most.

28. MANUFACTURING
– PATH FORWARD
Over the same 20 years that manufacturing jobs have declined, manufacturing
capabilities have advanced at an impressive rate. With the addition of
technological improvements and automated systems, manufacturers can do
more than ever. These advancements have also changed what manufacturing
jobs look like.
While we continue to see a worker shortage in the manufacturing industry, the
industry itself is growing. New jobs are opening every day because companies
are increasing their output.
Some of the biggest misconceptions regarding manufacturing jobs are the
work is dirty, the day-to-day role is repetitive, and automation is obsoleting
the need for manual roles. Despite an increase in automated systems, people
are still a critical component of the manufacturing process. Automation allows
manufacturers to increase their output, but it also provides increased
opportunities for team members.
Every manufacturing environment thrives off continuous improvement and
creativity. As automation and technology continue to play larger roles in the
manufacturing process, they present team members with countless
opportunities to learn exciting new skills and to evaluate processes to make
systemwide improvements. When companies provide on-the-job training to
help grow skill sets, it helps propel team member career paths forward.

Summary:
Manufacturing changed over the past 20 years due to many factors like
globalization, product rationalization, economy of scale, etc. Manufacturing
can play a key role as part of building a resilient supply chain, but it will
require all levels of government address their various policies in areas like
productivity or taxation and regulatory reforms or skills gaps or access to raw
materials or reducing supply chain disruption or other areas of policy. Here is

30. CHINA AND
SUPPLY CHAIN
U.S. companies trying to sustain business in China. Companies are increasingly
likely to map out a multiyear strategy for developing products geared toward the
Chinese market, based on the company’s competitive advantage over local
alternatives, and what is considered “good enough” in the target segment. One
option is to partner with a local business in China to gain access to the market
with a mandate requiring purchases from indigenous companies. For example,
Hewlett-Packard Enterprise has a successful partnership with H3C that opens
the Chinese enterprise IT market for HPE.
In addition, U.S. companies might look to acquire assets or build new business
models in segments where China or the Eastern Bloc has a strength that the U.S.
lacks, such as 5G equipment.
Another key decision: Many companies are considering a “China-plus-one”
supply chain model to reduce dependence on Chinese suppliers, add
redundancy and increase resilience.

36. RETAIL SECTOR
36
Summary:
Canadian retail sales rose 1.1% in June, easily beating forecasts, on pricier gasoline and higher sales at car
dealerships, Statistics Canada data showed on Friday, but sales were seen falling in July.
Analysts surveyed by Reuters had expected retail sales to rise 0.3% in July. Statscan, in a preliminary estimate, said
it sees July retail sales falling 0.2%.
Much of that July decline likely comes down to lower gasoline prices, but also signals rising consumer fatigue and
a cooling of demand following a series of Bank of Canada interest rate hikes, economists said.

Canadian railways carried 32.1 million tonnes of freight in May, up 8.7% from

The overall traffic volume was also the highest level for May since 2019, before the COVID-
19 pandemic, and it exceeded the five-year average of 31.3 million tonnes for the month.
