More and more people are filing asylum claims in Canada. The pace is highest it has been in years. The average asylum seekers is about 16K per year as compare to current pace that could see well over 30K in terms of asylum seekers.

The new data shows that, between January 1 and March 31, 2017, there were a total of
8,960 asylum claims filed through either the Department of Immigration, Refugees and
Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). The
estimate of asylum seekers would be close to 30,000. Nearly double the average which is
about 16,000

“January and February, we were getting updates from the RCMP and (Canada Border Services
Agency),” Falk said Monday. “We’ve been making the same inquiries from the same individuals,
and they tell us that Ottawa has gagged them and that they are unable to provide us that
information.”
Falk said he believes the number of illegal border crossers is rising, and said he’s seen it first-
hand.
“I came through the border two weeks ago on a Saturday night, and there were more than a
dozen individuals at the Emerson port of entry, just waiting to be processed. And this was on a
Saturday night. We know the numbers are increasing, and that’s something that they don’t want
Canadians to know

17. What needs to be done?
• The asylum seekers should be turn back over to USA through suspending
the safe habour agreement
• USA and Canada need to beef up security/monitoring of the border
• Federal funds need to be made available to provincial, municipal and
community groups to support the handling of asylum seekers.
