14. ARISTOTLE’S VIRTUE ETHICS
In 350 BC, Aristotle stated that happiness (also
being well and feeling well) is the only thing that
humans desire for their own sake, unlike riches,
honor, health or friendship.
He observed that humans sought riches, or honor
or health not only for their own sake but also in
order to be happy.
Thus understood, the happy life is the good life,
that is, a life in which a person fulfills one’s own
potential in an excellent way.
15. For Aristotle, 350 BC, the ultimate-goal of human
life is happiness.
• Finding a purpose to realize your potential.
• How virtues like thankfulness, endurance,
character, realistic hope, and meaningful
relationships enable us to become the best
versions of ourselves.
George Washington spoke of the “dissolvable
union between virtue and happiness.”

“I had on the whole, and though I never arrived at
perfection, I had been so ambitious of obtaining, but I fell
short of it, yet, I was by the endeavor a better and a
happier man then I otherwise would have been if I had
not attempted it.”
“It may well be my posterity should be informed that to
this little artifice, with the blessing of God, their
ancestor over the constant felicity of his life, down to
his 79 year, in which this is written…
To temperance he describes his long-continued health,
and what is still left to him of a good constitution.”

The Beatitudes
2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be
comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Happy are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Happy are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Happy are the peacemakers, for they shall be
called children of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for
righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute
you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my
account. 12 Re-joice and be glad, for your reward is great
in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were
before you.

GUIDELINES
FOR A VIRTOUS-
MORAL LIFE
21. What is the difference between
happiness and joy?
We re-joice in our sufferings, knowing that
suffering produces endurance, 4 and
endurance produces character, and
character produces hope, 5 and hope does
not put us to shame, because God’s love
has been poured into our hearts through
the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
(Romans 5: 3 -5)

leukemia.
Paul’s late wife, Karin
(1940 - 1986)
We endure our sufferings, because we have hope that
suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces
character (Experiencing Romans 5:3-5).
23. SERENITY PRAYER (Reinhold Niebuhr)
God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Trusting in God to make all things right.
---
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Nov 1. HOW RELATIONSHIPS MADE THE UNIVERSE & LIFE.
Big-Bang energetic beginning: relationships of matter particles created our physical cosmos.
Symbiotic relations between cells led to the Cambrian explosion of complex and human life.
