Focus GroupAnalysis:
We made our focusgroupto findout whata sample of our targetaudience wouldthinkaboutour
ideas,andwhattheycouldadd to them.We also wantedtofindoutif our ideasforour musicvideo
wouldappeal tothemas theyare the audience thatwe are tryingto target.We askedthem5
questions:
Question 1: What location do you think would suitour idea?
The firstanswerwe got to thisquestionwasfromGeorgina,she thinksthatthe roof of a multi-story
car park wouldbe a ‘quite cool’location. The topfloorof amulti-storycarpark was one of the
locationsthatwe alreadyhadin mind, we likedthe ideaof aview of the cityin the backgroundof
the shot.The secondlocationwassuggestedbyJoe,anditwasa mansionhouse,howeverasa
groupwe have decidedthatthiswouldnotbe one of the locationsthatwe woulduse.We decided
thisfor tworeasons:itwouldbe verydifficulttofindamansionhouse thatwe wouldhave
permissiontofilmon,andmore importantlyitwouldnotfit the general themeof ourmusicvideo.
The third suggestionwasfromBilly,andhe suggestedwe filmonacoastal road witha sunsetinthe
background.We have decidedthatthislocationwill be usedinourmusicvideo,aswe thinkthata
coastal road with a viewduringgoldenhourwouldbe averyvisuallypleasingshot.
Question2:What are your opinionsof ouridea?
The overall response tothisquestionwasverypositive,withall fourof oursample comingtoa
unanimousagreementthatourideaswere well thoughtoutandworkedwell.Twothingsthat
Georginaand Billyhighlightedwerethatthey especiallylikedthe ideaof lipsyncing,toadda
performance aspecttothe video,andthe maincharacter standingbetweenheadlightstohighlight
them.These are twoaspectsthat we will be sure to include asoursample all agreedthatthese
wouldbe veryeffective.
Question3:What do you like tosee ina musicvideo?
Thiswas possiblyone of the most useful questionsthatwe askedaswe were able to findoutwhat
we definitelyshouldnotincludeinourmusicvideo.Thisquestionallowedustoblacklistsome ideas
/ thingsthat we couldhave includedinourvideo.The three specificareasthattheymentioned
were:rude gestures, whichwere notgoingtobe included anywaysowe didn’tneedtoworryabout
that, violence,whichwouldmake the videotoointense andgive itaseriousfeelingwhichwe are not
aimingfor,andfinallytheysaidtokeepreligionandpoliticsoutof the video,asitisunnecessaryand
will againbringthe wrongfeelingintoourvideo.
Question4:What have you seenbefore inamusicvideothatyouliked:
Thiswas anotherveryuseful question,asitgave us an ideaof what our targetaudience wouldliketo
see inour musicvideo.The firstthingthatwas suggestedwasfromJoe,andwasthat the singerwas
the mainfocus of the video,whichwasone of our firstideas,howeverwe slightlystrayedfromthat
ideaandare tryingto findanotherwayof incorporatingitbackintoour musicvideo.The second
ideawasfrom Billy,andhe saidthat he likeditwhenthe videoiscutto the beatof the song.This
was somethingthatwe were alwaysgoingtodo,as doingthisgivesthe videoacleanerfeeland
makesitflowa lotbetter.The thirdideawas from Georgina,andwas that she likestosee good
choreographyina video,whichwe will bearinmind.
Question5:Wouldyou like tosee a performance ornarrative?
The questiontothisanswerwasagreeduponthat a performance basedmusicvideoisbetterand
more preferredthana narrative basedmusicvideo,basedonthisquestionourmusicvideowill be
performance based.
