What is Laughter (Hasya)

There is a saying in Gujarati that “ Hase
Tenu Ghar Vase” means those who can
laugh can get married.

There is a saying in China that “ If you can
not Laugh, Please do not start your own
business / Shop”
In Marathi it is talked about “Sat Mazli Hasya” it
means if you laugh at ground floor, person
on seventh floor should hear your laughter
& participate in it.

It is said for health “ An apple a day, keeps
Doctor away” same thing is applicable to
“A Smile a day keeps Doctor away”
What is Hasyayoga
Laughter Yoga / Laughter Therapy
The Laughter Yoga is an age old
technique of laughing in a yogic way.
The way regular physical exercise /
Yoga exercise is performed, in the same
way Laughter exercise can be
performed. Systematic way of
performing these exercise is called
Laughter Yoga. (Hasyayoga)
Ancient literature has explain the benefit of
Hasya Yoga. Modern Medical science has
experienced the benefit of laughter and it’s
positive impact on various systems of our
body in a scientific way. This is how
laughter therapy has come in to existence.

• Laughing - a gift of God to human being
  :In the entire universe only human
  being can laugh no other animals or
  birds can laugh.
• Number of laughing per day: A survey
  was conducted that how many times a
  person laugh per day. Result shows
  that a child of 3 month old laugh 300
  times a day. Number of laughing
  decrease as he or she goes to school,
  college, job and getting married. An
  average man laugh 3 to 4 times a day.

  helps heart patient to reduce number of tablets he/she
  taking per day. Laughter may be the best preventive
  medicine for those who are at a high risk of developing
  heart disease.

Therapy on 516 members of a laughter club

59% of members were suffering from some disease.
                                    After Practicing
Laughter 44% of them needed less medication.
                                     77% People had
positive improvement in their mental & physical health

  us we laugh, It can be movie, TV Serial, some
  event, listening of jocks. For us to laugh, some
  thing should always happen in front of us. If it does

  Reactive Laughter

 Proactive Laughter : we want to remain healthy,
 irrespective of something happening in front of us,
 we will laugh. Laughing will be a part of daily routine

• Productivity Through Laughter :When
  industries are undergoing recession and
  tough competition, employees are living
  stressful lives. It results in to some
  uncomforts, diseases, absenteeism and poor
  performance. Medical bill of a company also
  goes high.
• All members will have all benefits of laughter
  listed in this presentation, hence Win-Win
  situation can be arrived through Laughter
  Therapy.
• Industries can be near to NSIP (Not a Single
  Irritated Person) Strategy.
Best Time & Place to Laugh:
 Ideally, the laughter session must take place in the
morning. Either at public parks where people go for a
morning walk or along with any health building group
activity like yoga, aerobics, meditations, Ti Chi, sports
etc where the laughter yoga can be added as value
addition. Nowadays, in cities like Mumbai and
Bangalore evening laughter clubs have started.
Majority of the members are ladies who do not get
time in the morning because they are busy in cooking
and sending their children to school. At workplace like
offices and factories, people can start the day with 10-
15 minutes of laughter. The advantage of morning
laughter session is you start the day with a positive
note and it keeps you fresh and in a good mood
throughout the day. If morning time is not convenient,
session can be held during coffee break at 11 O'clock

• Technique of laughter : The
    laughter recommended is “SUGAR”
    for positive health.
•   S   -Spontaneous
•   U   -Unprovoked
•   G   -Group
•   A   -Action
•   R   -Remedy
Who Should not participate in laughter
                        session?
• 1. Any person who feels any discomfort in any
  part of the body, must get himself examined by a
  doctor and work out his physical fitness status
  before joining the laughter session.
• 2. A mild heaviness in the head after a laughter
  session in the beginning, is normal. Such
  individuals must not overexert and laugh
  forcefully. If you are already a hypertensive
  patient, get your blood pressure checked at least
  once in ten days. Don’t participate in laughter
  sessions if your blood pressure is high and
  uncontrolled. However, those taking treatment
  and keeping blood pressure within normal limits
  can join the sessions.
Who Should not participate in laughter
  session?
• 3. Any heart patient on treatment, or one who has
  had heart attack in the past must get clearance
  from his cardiologist before joining laughter
  sessions. Those with a history of heart attacks
  and those who have had bypass operations
  done, may join the session if their treadmill
  (stress test) results are within normal limits.
 . 4. Recent Surgery: To be on the safe side, one
  should not join a laughter session, within three
  months of any major operation, especially on the
  abdomen. In the later case, one must get
  clearence from one’s surgeon.
Who Should not participate in laughter
  session?
• 5. Pregnancy: In a small percentage of
  pregnant women, there is a possibility of
  abortion if there is a repeated rise in intra-
  abdominal pressure and they should avoid
  laughter sessions. If they wish to
  participate they must consult their
  specialist.

• 6. Person suffering from Hernia,Advanced
  Piles (Haemorrhoids), attacks of Cold and
  Flu, Eye Complications should not
  participate in laughter session.
Basic Guidelines for a Laughter Session:

1. All the participants will start laughing at the same
time when the anchor person gives the com mand
1,2...start.

2. People should not stand far away from each other.
To laugh without jokes, eye contact is the key. During
each type of laughter a person must maintain good eye
contact with more than one of his neighbours.

3. Do not apply too much force while laughing, it should
be more of a feeling and enjoying of the process.
4. One should try to feel free like a child and
  make funny gestures to make others laugh


 5. One bout of laughter lasts for 30 seconds
  to 45 seconds. After each bout of laughter,
  or sometimes after two bouts, two deep
  breaths are taken, in order to give a break.
  This avoids exertion and tiredness.
  Sometimes, various neck, shoulder and
  arm stretching exercises are done in place
  of deep breathing between bouts of
  laughters.
New Model of Laughter Therapy Session

A typical laughter session is a perfect blend of
various stimulated laughter techniques interspersed
with breathing and stretching exercises. A 20-30
minutes of laughter session can be divided into
following parts:

Deep Breathing (Tadasan) : Yogic breathing
techniques help us to bring both physical and mental
relaxation.
This exercise need to be performed in between any
two laughter yoga exercise.
The session starts when one takes a deep breath through
the nostrils, simultaneously raising the arms up towards
the sky, the breathing in should be rhythmic, in
accordance with movement of the arms and one should
keep on filling air into the lungs, as much as possible, and
then hold one's breath for 4 seconds. Then the breath is
released slowly and rhythmically by bringing the stretched
arms back to normal position. One can breathe out
through the nose or preferably through the mouth by
pursing the lips, as if whistling silently. This is in
accordance with yogic deep breathing (a type of
paranayama) where the duration of exhalation is
prolonged almost double the time of inhalation.
Following Types of Laughter Yoga
Exercise can be practiced.
                         1) Warm Up
Laughter/ Ho-Ho Ha-Ha Exercise: The
session starts with warm up ho ho ha ha
exercise. All the members start chanting Ho-Ho
Ha-Ha in unison, with rhythmic clapping 1-2, 1-2-
3. (Ho-Ho; Ha-Ha-Ha). The sound should come
from the naval, so as to feel the movement of
abdominal muscles, while keep the mouth half
open. While chanting Ho-Ho Ha-Ha, a smile
should be maintained and one should keep
moving and meeting different people with good
eye contact. Good ground movement and
enthusiastic clapping will help to build up good
energy levels (philosophy of motion creates
emotion).
2) Hearty Vigorous Laughter / Patiala
Laughter / Lankesh Laughter / Gabbar
Singh Laughter :

Here members open their mouth widely
and laugh heartily and vigorously
moving their hands as well as slapping
each other’s hand.
•3) Silent ‘Joker’s Laughter : In this type of
laughter, the mouth is opened as wide as possible and
participants laugh looking at each others’ faces and
making different gestures showing their palms to each
other, shaking their heads and sometimes their hands.
Silent Laughter should be done with quick movements
of the abdominal muscles as we do during
spontaneous laughter. It should not be like a prolonged
hissing sound, which looks more artificial. Important:
One should not apply excess force or over exert while
laughing without sound. It can be harmful if intra-
abdominal pressure is raised unnecessarily. One
should try to impart more feeling rather than applying
too much force
• 4) Office Laughter / Pigeon Laughter /Humming
Laughter With Lips Closed: In this type of laughter,
the lips are closed and a person tries to laugh while
making a humming sound which resonates throughout
the skull. People can keep on looking at each other,
making some gestures to stimulate each other or shake
hands with each others or any other kind playfulness
can be brought during the laughter. Some people also
call it pigeon laughter. Caution: One should not try to
laugh without sound while keeping the mouth closed
with force. This raises undue pressure in the
abdominal cavity that may be harmful.

•5) Lion Laughter: This particular laughter has
been derived from a yogic posture known as
Simha Mudra (Lion Posture). In the lion posture,
stick your tongue out fully while keeping the
mouth wide open. With eyes wide open stretch
your hands like the paws of a lion and roar like a
lion followed by laughter coming from your
belly. Lion Laughter gives very good exercise to
facial muscles, the tongue and throat. It removes
inhibitions and good for the immunity of throat.
It is also improves blood supply to the thyroid
gland.
•6) Cell Phone Laughter: This is also known as
mobile phone laughter. It is very amusing and playful.
The participants will hold imaginary mobile phone try
to laugh making different gestures and moving around
in the group to meet different people and laugh as if
they are enjoying the laughter. Mobile phone laughter
can also be done in two groups facing each other and
at the command of anchor person both the group will
cross each other while laughing and holding the
mobile phone. If required the two groups can cross
over again to come back to the original position.
While crossing the member must look at each other
and laugh. .
•7) Swinging Laughter / Rolly Polly Laughter: This
is an interesting kind laughter as it has a lot of
playfulness. All the member move outwards by two
meters to widen the circle. On instruction from the
anchor person people move forward by making a
prolonged sound of Ae Ae- Aeeeee....., simultaneously
raising the hands and they all burst into laughter while
meeting in the center and waving their hands. After
the bout of laughter, they move back to their original
position. The second time they move forward by
saying Oh- Ooooooo.. and burst into laughter.
Similarly, the third and fourth times they make the
sounds of Eh- Eh... E.... and Oh- Oh... O... Many
people are seen behaving like children and enjoying
the fun.
8) Heart to Heart Laughter (Intimacy
Laughter): This laughter should be done
last of all and here the participants come
closer and hold each others hands and
laugh with compassionate eye contact. One
can shake hands, hug each other while
laughing if convenient. This is also known
as intimacy laughter. In conservative
communities ladies and gents can do in
separate groups.
The benefit of Hasya Yoga has been
 tested and validated scientifically
 across the world on thousands of
 people.

  • 32. Who Should not participate in laughter session? • 1. Any person who feels any discomfort in any part of the body, must get himself examined by a doctor and work out his physical fitness status before joining the laughter session. • 2. A mild heaviness in the head after a laughter session in the beginning, is normal. Such individuals must not overexert and laugh forcefully. If you are already a hypertensive patient, get your blood pressure checked at least once in ten days. Don’t participate in laughter sessions if your blood pressure is high and uncontrolled. However, those taking treatment and keeping blood pressure within normal limits can join the sessions.

Any heart patient on treatment, or one who has had heart attack in the past must get clearance from his cardiologist before joining laughter sessions. Those with a history of heart attacks and those who have had bypass operations done, may join the session if their treadmill (stress test) results are within normal limits. . 4. Recent Surgery: To be on the safe side, one should not join a laughter session, within three months of any major operation, especially on the abdomen.   • 35. Basic Guidelines for a Laughter Session: 1. All the participants will start laughing at the same time when the anchor person gives the com mand 1,2...start. 2. People should not stand far away from each other. To laugh without jokes, eye contact is the key. During each type of laughter a person must maintain good eye contact with more than one of his neighbours. 3. Do not apply too much force while laughing, it should be more of a feeling and enjoying of the process.
  • 36. 4. One should try to feel free like a child and make funny gestures to make others laugh 5. One bout of laughter lasts for 30 seconds to 45 seconds. After each bout of laughter, or sometimes after two bouts, two deep breaths are taken, in order to give a break. This avoids exertion and tiredness. Sometimes, various neck, shoulder and arm stretching exercises are done in place of deep breathing between bouts of laughters.
  • 37. New Model of Laughter Therapy Session A typical laughter session is a perfect blend of various stimulated laughter techniques interspersed with breathing and stretching exercises. A 20-30 minutes of laughter session can be divided into following parts: Deep Breathing (Tadasan) : Yogic breathing techniques help us to bring both physical and mental relaxation. This exercise need to be performed in between any two laughter yoga exercise.

The session starts when one takes a deep breath through the nostrils, simultaneously raising the arms up towards the sky, the breathing in should be rhythmic, in accordance with movement of the arms and one should keep on filling air into the lungs, as much as possible, and then hold one's breath for 4 seconds. Then the breath is released slowly and rhythmically by bringing the stretched arms back to normal position. One can breathe out through the nose or preferably through the mouth by pursing the lips, as if whistling silently. This is in accordance with yogic deep breathing (a type of paranayama) where the duration of exhalation is prolonged almost double the time of inhalation.
  • 40. Following Types of Laughter Yoga Exercise can be practiced. 1) Warm Up Laughter/ Ho-Ho Ha-Ha Exercise: The session starts with warm up ho ho ha ha exercise. All the members start chanting Ho-Ho Ha-Ha in unison, with rhythmic clapping 1-2, 1-2- 3. (Ho-Ho; Ha-Ha-Ha). The sound should come from the naval, so as to feel the movement of abdominal muscles, while keep the mouth half open. While chanting Ho-Ho Ha-Ha, a smile should be maintained and one should keep moving and meeting different people with good eye contact. Good ground movement and enthusiastic clapping will help to build up good energy levels (philosophy of motion creates emotion).

  • 42. •3) Silent ‘Joker’s Laughter : In this type of laughter, the mouth is opened as wide as possible and participants laugh looking at each others’ faces and making different gestures showing their palms to each other, shaking their heads and sometimes their hands. Silent Laughter should be done with quick movements of the abdominal muscles as we do during spontaneous laughter. It should not be like a prolonged hissing sound, which looks more artificial. Important: One should not apply excess force or over exert while laughing without sound. It can be harmful if intra- abdominal pressure is raised unnecessarily. One should try to impart more feeling rather than applying too much force
  • 43. • 4) Office Laughter / Pigeon Laughter /Humming Laughter With Lips Closed: In this type of laughter, the lips are closed and a person tries to laugh while making a humming sound which resonates throughout the skull. People can keep on looking at each other, making some gestures to stimulate each other or shake hands with each others or any other kind playfulness can be brought during the laughter. Some people also call it pigeon laughter. Caution: One should not try to laugh without sound while keeping the mouth closed with force. This raises undue pressure in the abdominal cavity that may be harmful.

  • 45. •5) Lion Laughter: This particular laughter has been derived from a yogic posture known as Simha Mudra (Lion Posture). In the lion posture, stick your tongue out fully while keeping the mouth wide open. With eyes wide open stretch your hands like the paws of a lion and roar like a lion followed by laughter coming from your belly. Lion Laughter gives very good exercise to facial muscles, the tongue and throat. It removes inhibitions and good for the immunity of throat. It is also improves blood supply to the thyroid gland.

The participants will hold imaginary mobile phone try to laugh making different gestures and moving around in the group to meet different people and laugh as if they are enjoying the laughter. Mobile phone laughter can also be done in two groups facing each other and at the command of anchor person both the group will cross each other while laughing and holding the mobile phone. If required the two groups can cross over again to come back to the original position. While crossing the member must look at each other and laugh. .
  • 47. •7) Swinging Laughter / Rolly Polly Laughter: This is an interesting kind laughter as it has a lot of playfulness. All the member move outwards by two meters to widen the circle. On instruction from the anchor person people move forward by making a prolonged sound of Ae Ae- Aeeeee....., simultaneously raising the hands and they all burst into laughter while meeting in the center and waving their hands. After the bout of laughter, they move back to their original position. The second time they move forward by saying Oh- Ooooooo.. and burst into laughter. Similarly, the third and fourth times they make the sounds of Eh- Eh... E.... and Oh- Oh... O... Many people are seen behaving like children and enjoying the fun.
  • 48. 8) Heart to Heart Laughter (Intimacy Laughter): This laughter should be done last of all and here the participants come closer and hold each others hands and laugh with compassionate eye contact. One can shake hands, hug each other while laughing if convenient. This is also known as intimacy laughter. In conservative communities ladies and gents can do in separate groups.
