This is the sixth sermon in the series on Geneseo Evangelical Free Church's 8 Core Values. Our sixth value is a commitment to Service. We will deal with several key teachings in scripture concerning the spiritual gifting of the Body of Christ and the call to serve as servant followers and servant leaders.
3. CORE
A Commitment to Service
We will encourage and provide
training opportunities that will
enable each believer to identify and
be involved in using their spiritual
gifts for the benefit of the church
and the glory of God.
4. CORE
Every believer is spiritually gifted
1 Corinthians 7:7
I wish that all were
as I myself am. But
each has his own
gift from God, one
of one kind and
one of another.
Ephesians 4:7
But grace was
given to each one
of us according to
the measure of
Christ’s gift.
5. CORE
Every believer is uniquely gifted
Romans 12:6-8
6 We have different gifts, according to
the grace given to each of us. If your
gift is prophesying, then prophesy in
accordance with your faith;

Every believer is uniquely gifted
Romans 12:6-8
7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is
teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to
encourage, then give encouragement; if
it is giving, then give generously; if it is to
lead, do it diligently; if it is to show
mercy, do it cheerfully.
7. CORE
Every believer is to rely on God’s strength
1 Peter 4:11
11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one
who speaks the very words of God. If
anyone serves, they should do so with the
strength God provides, so that in all things
God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To
him be the glory and the power for ever and
ever. Amen.

A Commitment to Service
This commitment is intended to include
recognition of and submission to
Biblical Leadership. We will require our
church leaders to meet the biblical
qualifications as set forth in the Word of
God.

An exhortation for those under authority
Hebrews 13:17
Obey your leaders and submit to them,
for they are keeping watch over your
souls, as those who will have to give an
account. Let them do this with joy and
not with groaning, for that would be of
no advantage to you.
10. CORE
An exhortation for those in authority
Matthew 20
25 But Jesus called them to him and
said, “You know that the rulers of the
Gentiles lord it over them, and their
great ones exercise authority over
them.
11. CORE
Matthew 20
26 It shall not be so among you. But
whoever would be great among you
must be your servant, 27 and whoever
would be first among you must be your
slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came
not to be served but to serve, and to give
his life as a ransom for many.”
13. CORE
A Commitment to Service
We will serve our God, our fellow
believers, and our community, not
just as an activity but as a mindset
and a way of life.

John 13
12 When he had washed their feet
and put on his outer garments and
resumed his place, he said to them, “Do
you understand what I have done to
you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and
you are right, for so I am.

John 13
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher,
have washed your feet, you also
ought to wash one another's
feet. 15 For I have given you an
example, that you also should do just
as I have done to you.

John 13
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a
servant is not greater than his
master, nor is a messenger greater
than the one who sent him. 17 If you
know these things, blessed are you if
you do them.

Servant leadership turns the power pyramid upside down; instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. When leaders shift their mindset and serve first, they unlock purpose and ingenuity in those around them, resulting in higher performance and engaged, fulfilled employees.” Military.com
