In this sermon we explore Jesus' miracle of walking on water. We will see how he compelled the disciples to go ahead of Him in a boat, and then how he used this as an opportunity to show them His glory. We will also explore how Jesus first dismissed the crowds to get alone with His Father, and we will consider our unique 21st century challenge. How do we dismiss the crowds when we are constantly carrying our crowds with us?

some psychological

really worried about is
that people aren't
taking time for mental
reflection anymore,

Walking on Water
First Point
The Challenge of “Dismissing the Crowds”.
Matthew 14
22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
“He made” is a very strong word in Greek meaning “he compelled” (ἀναγκάζω) the disciples to get into the boat.
23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
John 6
14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
Second Point
The Challenge of Seeing God’s Glory.
24 but the boat by this time was a long way [many stadia] from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.
Many stadia
John provides us with a more precise measurement. The disciples were somewhere between 3-4 miles away from shore. The total distance across the Sea of Galilee is 8 miles… so they are in the middle of the sea where the depth is 140 feet. So, the notion that Jesus is walking on the shore or on a sandbar is entirely ridiculous.
25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.
Fourth Watch = 3-6 a.m.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Third Point
The Challenge of Stepping Out in Faith.
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
Want to know what your boat is? Your fear will tell you. Just ask yourself this: What is it that most produces fear in me – especially when I think of leaving it behind and stepping out in faith?
29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
Ingressive aorist: Start to come.

One of the clearest assertions of the deity of Jesus.
