Walking on the Water

  1. 1. Walking on the Water Matt 14 22 And straightwayJesus constrainedhis disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the eveningwas come, he was there alone. 24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. A miraculous story is simply entertainment, unless you can apply the details to everyday life. I. What you don’t know (Doctrinal application) Matt 14 25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walkingon the sea. Night is divided into four watches the first was from 6pm-9 the second from 9-12 the third from 12-3am the fourth from 3am-6am Luke 12:38 tells us that “the lord” could come in the second or third watch, but Matthew 14:25 tells us that He did come in the fourth watch. The type places the return of Jesus at the end of the night. The Millennial Day begins when Jesus the “Sun” arises (Mal. 4:2; II Pet. 3:8), so it is night until then, with the church being like the moon (Song. 6:10).
  2. 2. This means that from the church age till the Mil. Is divides into four separate periods, or watches (and the last period is further divided into seven periods Rev 1-4). The middle of the church age is referred to as the Dark Ages or the Middle Ages, running from 500 AD till 1500 AD. This corresponds to the darkest part of night, from 9:00 pm till 3:00 am. What you don’t know (Doctrinal application) II. What you already know (Jesus works miracles) Matt 14 26 And when the disciples saw him walkingon the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. A subtle fact that is not so subtle in the Bible- a spirit (Holy or unholy) is scary if you see it, but most the world is blind. (Mark 5:2-5; Luke 16:30; 24:37) Matt 14 27 But straightwayJesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. This is what He said when: He forgives a man’s sins Matt 9:2; He commissions a representative John 16:33; He retires a solder Acts 23:11 Matt 14 28 And Peter answeredhim and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
  3. 3. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the windboisterous, he was afraid; and beginningto sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediatelyJesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshippedhim, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. What you don’t know (Doctrinal application) What you already know (Jesus works miracles) III. What you need to know A. The Strange Situation- v24,26 “ship tossed with the waves… windcontrary… they were troubled… and they cried out for fear. Peter and his peers were petrified Eccl 11:4-6 4 He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. 6 In the morning sow thy seed, and in the eveningwithholdnot thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good. KJV Prov 3:27 Withholdnot good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. KJV 1Pet 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughoutPontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, KJV
  4. 4. 1Pet 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangersand pilgrims, abstain from fleshlylusts, which war against the soul; KJV 1Pet 4:3-4 3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: KJV B. The Solution- Bid me come v28 Matt 14:28-29 28 And Peter answeredhim and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. KJV Two things hinder a man from coming to Jesus: Fear of the storm or failure to hear the call (He didn’t say ‘Peter’ “come” this was a whosoever will call) 1Pet 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be broughtunto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; KJV 1Pet 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. KJV 1Pet 2:7-8 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
  5. 5. 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, beingdisobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. KJV 2Pet 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjustunto the day of judgment to be punished: KJV C. Storm- v30 wind boisterous… beginningto sink The solution was not about the storm but having good cheer despite the storm (v 27) You can’t see you’re walking if you’re watching the waves (point of view- watching a train @ a RR crossing) Jesus caught him because he was falling NOT after he had drown or before he could fall. 1Cor 10:13; Gal 6:1 1Pet 1:6-7 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifoldtemptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: KJV 2Pet 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: KJV 2Pet 3:13 Nevertheless we, accordingto his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. KJV
  6. 6. D. The Span- Matt 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him… Peters reach was too short (Matt 14:31...O thou of little faith) Man never has enough faith in Gods ability or willingness to save. Eph 2:8 1Pet 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God throughfaith unto salvation ready to be revealedin the last time. KJV 1Pet 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. KJV 1Pet 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. KJV 2Pet 1:2-3 2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you throughthe knowledgeof God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3 Accordingas his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath calledus to glory and virtue: KJV 1Kgs 18:44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. KJV Heb 12:1-3 1 Wherefore seeingwe also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which
  7. 7. doth so easilybeset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him enduredthe cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider him that enduredsuch contradiction of sinners againsthimself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
