MAKING CHRISTMAS CARDS!
Every year when December comes we think
about Christmas and what presents we want to
get, but does that mean that
Christmas is a consumerist
celebration?
Everybody knows that
advertisers try to sell the most
products and take advantage of
the days before Christmas to sell
a lot. We are used to shopping in
these days but I think that the
best things are staying at home
with our families.
¿Is Christmas now a consumerist celebration? by Silvia
On the other hand everybody enjoys giving
and receiving presents so maybe this is a
good idea to make people
happy once a year.
Moreover, with your
presents you show your
friends and family that
you care about them.
Finally, at Christmas you
should have a good time
with your family and
maybe think less about
material things.

DINNER FOR ONE
8. Christmas Survival Guide
Tips on how to get through the Christmas period without going crazy
by Eva, Marta and Elena
Cooking and food
You have to find
out if anyone is
allergic to some
foods.
You must go on a
diet before the
holidays because
you’ll probably get fat!
You mustn’t tell you mother how to cook the
dinner (mothers know everything).
Family and Children
You have to be patient with everyone.
You have to buy presents for children
so they stay entertained (and quiet).
Shopping
You should do your shopping before the
holidays.
You mustn’t go shopping in department stores
in the afternoon.
You should make a list with the things that you
want to buy.
You shouldn’t buy too many presents for your
family because they always hate what you
buy them anyway!
You should buy your girlfriend/boyfriend
a present that they can take back to the
shop.
Decorations
You mustn’t have decorations
within the reach of small
children.
You don’t have to use
a real Christmas
tree.
You shouldn’t have
Christmas lights
with music.
9. Where were you born?
I was born in Liverpool, in England.
Why did you come to Spain?
I first came to Asturias in 2003, for a walking holiday, and I
loved it.When I had the opportunity to live in another
country those memories and the fact that I could speak a
little Spanish helped me to decide on Spain.
Are you happy in Spain?
Yes thanks. I like the lifestyle in Spain, the way that people
are very open and friendly. In the UK I used to spend
hours in the car going to and from work and it seemed like
everyone was always busy and in a hurry.
What did you study at University?
I studied microbiology.
Why are you teaching English?
Well I worked in microbiology laboratories for ten years
and then in quality
management, and it seemed
like time for a change.You
could say that teaching
English is quite the change
indeed.
What was your first
impression of Spain?
My first visits to Spain were
to Mallorca and to the Costa
Dorada for rock climbing
holidays. The weather in winter was perfect for climbing
and it let us escape the cold British winter. So my first
impression was of tiny mountain villages and Mallorcan
villas. I loved it.And the food was fantastic.
An interview with
John Wyke
by the CAE Students
What’s the highest mountain you've
climbed?
The Dômes de Miage at 3673m. I tried to climb Mont
Blanc but I twisted my ankle the day before and had to stay
in theTete Rouse hut while my friend and the guide went to
the summit. The Dômes de Miage is fantastic though, a real
icy knife edge.
Did you come to Spain alone?
No I came with my girlfriend Liz, we got married last year
in England.
Who do you celebrate Christmas with?
Liz and I usually go back to the UK and see our families
and friends over Christmas. It’s a busy week!
Do you miss anything from Britain?
Good thick British bacon.
Although I must admit, the
Spanish make very good use of
the pig too.
Have you spent a
Christmas here?
Not yet, we normally come back
for new year’s eve.This year we’ll
be in Sotres with friends.
What do you think of Spanish students?
They’re very hard working in my experience. The
educational systems are different though, and there seems
to be an emphasis here on theory more than practice (or
maybe before practice) which is different to the UK.

14. DRIED FRUIT: Score: 4/10
Description: There are different
types of dried fruit typical in Spain
like dates, figs, and raisins. They are
different colours like brown, dark green and purple.
Our opinion: We don’t like this because it is dry and
hard. But it’s healthy and my dad
loves it!
MARZIPAN: Score: 5/10
Description: Marzipan is made
from almonds. Also it has egg white and sugar. The shapes
are like animals and people. They are soft.
Our opinion: We think they are dry and horrible, but my
cousin loves them. You can buy them in bakeries and in
the supermarket.
PELADILLAS (SUGARED
ALMONDS): Score: 6/10
Description: They are sweets with
almonds or pine-nuts inside. Normally
they are white but there are different

find them in supermarkets.
Our opinion: They are delicious, we love them.

POLVORONES:

are many different
flavours like lemon,
coconut, almond, chocolate, wine. They are dry and
very sweet. Homemade polvorones are better than
the polvorones from shops.

We eat them for the ‘merienda’ (afternoon snack).
ROSCÓN DE REYES
(KING’S RING CAKE)
Score 9/10
Description: It is made from
sponge cake and it has inside
a small doll (good luck) and a bean (bad luck). If you
get the doll you are the King, and if you get the doll

Our opinion: We think it is delicious, but only one
piece. It fills you up.
FERRERO ROCHER: Score: 10/10 !!!

big hazelnuts inside. Also they have little pieces of
hazelnuts on the top and some nutella inside. It looks

the best.We love them and
we always
eat them at
Christmas.
