Subject : Teaching of Physical Science
Topic of Discussion :Dr. Homi J Bhabha
Guide : Nirpendra Pratap Singh
3. Who is Homi Bhabha?
Father of Indian Nuclear program
Born on 30th October 1909 in Bombay
His father was Jahangir Hormusji Bhabha, was an lawyer
He loved Mathematics and Physics
4. Education of Homi J Bhabha
Received his early studies at Bombay's Cathedral
and John Connon School
In January 1933, Bhabha received his doctorate
in nuclear physics
He won Isaac Newton Studentship in 1934,continuing
for next three years.
Awarded with Senior Studentship in 1937 in Cambridge
University
5. Why father of Indian Nuclear
Program ?
His strategy was to focusing on extracting power from the
country's vast thorium reserves rather than its meager uranium
reserves ,777
Homi J Bhabha was instrumental in convincing then Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to start India's Nuclear Program.
In 1954, Nehru appointed Bhabha as the Director of Atomic
Energy Establishment
The three stage Nuclear Program Started
6. The First Stage
Pressurized Heavy Nuclear Reactor
INPUT : Natural Uranium U- 238
By Product : Plutonium - 239
Note : this stage is mainly focus on extracting the
plutonium -239 from natural uranium
7. The Second Stage
Fast Breed Reactor
Input : Processed Plutonium – 239
+
Mixed Oxide Fuel ( u- 238)
By Product : Plutonium – 239
Note :In this stage reactor will give more plutonium 239 than it
will take as input
8. The Third Stage
Input : Thorium – 232 + U – 233
U – 233 ( transmuted p – 239 )
Thorium Based Reactor
By Product : Self sustaining Stage of Generating
Note : Thermal breeder Reactor , which is the principal of generating
the thermal energy by sustain supplying thorium.
9. Legacy of Dr. Homi Bhabha after his death
Bhabha died when Air India Flight 101 crashed
near Mont Blanc on 24 January 1966.
The Atomic Energy Establishment at Mumbai was
renamed as the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in
his Honour.
India Become atomic power in the field of
Weapon on 11th May 1998 at Pokharan Test Range
10. Awards to Dr. Homi Bhabha
The Rogers Medal1942 Padma Bhushan Name after His Death
