1. Focus on Ferguson
How does the media’s use of pictures shape public opinion?
Why do they choose each picture?
2. Pictures of Michael Brown
On Social Media and The News
Social media users shared pictures minutes after the shooting while there were
only two news websites that published his picture within forty eight hours that I
could find.
4. News
STL Post-Dispatch – August 9, 2014 USA Today - August 10, 2014
Some news outlets did not publish a picture of Michael Brown in their initial online reports including The New York Times, Fox News, and
Huffington Post. For the most part, news outlets chose to focus on protests rather than Michael Brown as a person or the shooting.
5. Images of Ferguson in the News
Pictures of the protests and their aftermath.
Most news outlets chose to focus on violence and damage.

18. STL Post-Dispatch Pictures that
Won the Pulitzer Prize for
Breaking News Photography
David Carson, Laurie Skrivan, Robert Cohen, James Forbes, Christian Gooden, Huy
Mach, and Lynden Steele are the photographers.
Think about what these pictures are showing and why they were chosen. Keep in
mind they were taken and published by a news outlet.

Images appear in the order that the STL post dispatch published them on their website after winning the Pulitzer Prize.
29. Chronicle Ferguson
Response and Resistance
While the media’s pictures were deeply moving, Chronicle Ferguson accepted
pictures from anyone creating a well rounded view as well as a timeline of
Ferguson protests. Not all pictures focused on violence, they show a community as
it is.
31. August 14, 2014 August 14, 2014
There were no pictures of children attending protests in the STL Post-Dispatch’s Pulitzer Prize winning photographs or in other media outlets
that I researched.
