This document discusses Avenged Sevenfold's music video for their song "Bat Country" and how it draws inspiration from and references Hunter S. Thompson's novel "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". 2. One of Goodwins principles is the use of intertextual references to other medias. Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘Bat Country’ was written with inspiration from Hunter S. Thompsons’s novel ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’, therefore the songs music video was made based on the novels film adaption. The song’s title comes from a line in the book where Raoul Duke says the line “We can’t stop here. This is bat country”. Another quote from the novel that is said in the song, but only seen in the music video is the character Dr. Gonzo’s line “ He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man”. This quote is shown at the beggining of the music video, where as the original track features lead singer M. Shadows saying it. Other features of ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ that feature in the music video is where it is set; Las Vegas. We see the band traveling down a barren desert highway, which is what the books characters are seen doing. Later in the music video we see the band in a hotel room, casino and strip club. Which are other destinations featured in the book/film. Also the music video contains very surreal things such as women with long snake toung, people with fish bowl eyes, bats in the air and many other things. 3. Goodwin believed that music videos will feature a relationship between the songs lyrics and what is featured in the music video. Avenged Sevenfold have done this is several parts of their music video. The first verse of the song matches what is seen on screen successfully: I tri-ie-ied to drive all through the night,The heat stroke ridden weather, the barren empty sights.No oasis here to see, the sand is singing deathless words to me.
