2. Reasoning Reveals Here…
As sun goes at its peak, everyone starts feeling uneasy.
Its simply because temperature in the air starts rising.
But that’s not the only reason behind feeling
discomfort. Humidity also starts affecting our body.
Temperature & Humidity are main reasons behind
feeling such discomfort.
The theory which explains the relative discomfort in
the population having same weather conditions is
known as Discomfort Index Theory.
3. Discomfort Index
Discomfort Index refers to impact of heat & stress on
the individual taking into account the combined effect
of temperature and humidity.
It is calculated as follows:
Thom’s DI = T – [0.55*(1-H%)*(T – 14.5)]
Where, DI = Discomfort Index
T = Temperature in degree Celsius
H = relative Humidity in air
4. This would fetch a number which will give following
interpretation:
DI Implication
<21 No discomfort
21-24
Under 50% of population feels
discomfort
24-27
Over 50% of population feels
discomfort
27-29
Most of the population suffers from
discomfort
29-32 Everyone feels stressed
>32 State of Medical Emergency
5. Example
If at given point of time temperature in Mumbai is
32◦C and relative humidity in air is 69%; Discomfort
Index would be:
DI = 32 – [0.55*(1 – 69%)*(32 – 14.5)]
= 32 – 2.98375
= 29.01
Which would be enough to conclude that Everyone
feels stress in Mumbai at given point of time as per
Thom’s discomfort theory.
