I. Read the passage below.
A Breathtaking View
The closer to the top we got, the heavier my backpack felt. It was becoming
harder and harder to move my feet. To make matters worse, it was a hot summer day.
There was no cloud in sight. The sun was beating down on us, and I had no shade to
escape it. I pictured my beautiful air-conditioned room and wished with all my might to
be there.
“How much farther do we have?” I whined.
“Just one more mile!” Dad answered. “Hang in there, Kenny. It’ll all be worth it
when we are at the top! You can see the whole canyon from there!”
I did not believe him. I was surrounded by rocks, red dirt, and dead grass. What
could possibly make this worth it?
