sCHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction– Social Networking Sites
Few years back, usage of social networking sites became popular around the world. Social
networking sites are also known as social networking website. Social networking sites (SNSs) are
increasingly attracting the attention of academic and industry researchers' fascinated by their
affordances and reach. Social networking sites are web–base service that building an online
community of people that share same interest, or activities and explore others people interest. Social
network sites (SNSs) such as FACEBOOK, TWITTER, MYSPACE, CYWORLD, and BEBO have
attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated these sites into their practices.

Now, seems like all the population moved to FACEBOOK and MySpace now became less and less
visitors.
3) TWITTER
Twitter should be probably being at number two on this list. They average 628,759,806 inbound
links and weigh in with 23,000,000 monthly visitors, but their social impact is bigger than their
numbers. With fewer monthly visitors that MySpace, they're relegated to third. Twitter is the "it
boy" in social networking now, with some people leaving Facebook (way too gauche) for the
more refined twitter. The cool part about twitter is the ease with which you can find your favorite
celebs and sports figures to follow. Unlike Facebook (just trying "friend" with one of your favorite
musicians in Facebook) you can easily read stars and smart people's updates. Twitter could easily
take over the number one spot on this list as more and more people join.
Rounding out the list are LINKEDIN, CLASSMATES.COM, NING, BEBO, HI5.COM, TAGGED
and MY YEARBOOK.
1.2 Social Networking Sites in Malaysia In Malaysia, there is no doubt that more and more
working peoples are spending more and more of their time socializing and networking online.
This due to availability of mobile devices, services at an affordable price and also the availability
of online facilities. Technology has played an integral part of our daily lives. The fact that
technology is becoming more readily available at a lower cost has given more options and

Social Networks Essay
Over the past decade the internet has become a important part of everyday life by people of all ages.
The internet is used for a variety of purposes, such as finding information, buying and selling
products, watching television shows, finding friendships and searching for entertainment, but the
main use for the internet is communication. Three quarters of American adults have been online,
with even more teens (93%). Almost all of those internet users say their main purpose for going
online is for communication (Correa, Hinsley, Zuniga 2010, cited in Jones and Fox 2009, Pg 247).
With the introduction of social networking sites such as Facebook, My Space, Twitter and various
smaller community based social networking sites it has made the...show more content...
In June 2010 Facebook, one of the most popular social networking site, logged its 500 millionth
new user, 100 million of those new users were since February 2010 alone (Zhong, Hardin and Sun
2011, Pg 1265, cited in Bilton 2010 and Fletcher 2010). With the constant growth of technology,
such as computers, mobile phones and more recently the tablet, for example Apples iPad, the
internet has become so easily accessible that it has allowed for social networking sites to extremely
alter how people communicate and interact with each other. Social networking sites have provided
new ways to communicate and share information and have now become an important aspect of
people lives.
Social networking sites have allowed users to take advantage of the many benefits of having a
social network account. The ability to build social connections, as well as maintain current social
contacts without having to leave the comfort of ones own house. People are able to share special
moments, such as photos and videos with others instantly online. Social networking sites can
increase business prospects with the added benefits of online advertising as well as building a
solid business relationship with fellow social network users. Groups can be formed to share and
provide information with others with similar interests. Lehdonvirta and Rasanen (2011, Pg 94)

Socializing Securely: Using Social Networking Services Mindi McDowell and Damon Morda
Social Networking Serves Many Purposes Social networking is a way for people to connect and
share information with each other online. Millions of people worldwide regularly access these
types of services from mobile devices, applications, and websites. According to statistics published
by some of the most well–known social networking services, there are more than 500 million active
users on Facebook1, 175 million registered users on Twitter2, more than 100 million users on
MySpace3, and more than 80 million members on LinkedIn4. People may use social networking
services for different reasons: to network with new contacts, reconnect with former friends,...show

This information could then be used in a variety of ways, such as tailoring advertisements,
performing market research, sending spam email, or accessing your contacts. Professional and
Personal Implications You may risk professional opportunities, personal relationships, and safety by
posting certain types of information on social networking services. Business data – Posting sensitive
information intended only for internal company use on a social networking service can have serious
consequences. Disclosing information about customers, intellectual property, human resource issues,
mergers and acquisitions, or other company activities could result in liability or bad publicity, or
could reveal information that is useful to competitors. Professional reputation – Inappropriate photos
or content on a social networking service may threaten a user's educational and career prospects.
Colleges and universities may 2 conduct online searches about potential students during the
application process. Many companies also perform online searches of job candidates during the
interview process. Information that suggests that a person might be unreliable, untrustworthy, or
unprofessional could threaten the candidate's application. There have also been many instances of
people losing their jobs for content posted to these services. Although the legality of some of these

CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW Introduction The Internet is more than just a means of
seeking information. People discovered that the Internet could be used to connect with other
people, whether for business or commercial purpose, make new friends, reawaken old friends and
long lost relatives. The emergence of social networking sites (SNSs) simplify the whole process as
majority of them are free to use, they are easier to use and navigate, because it does not require
advanced knowledge and experience of the internet and are made up of a wide array of different
formats and topics; this means that just about anyone can connect. Currently, there are hundreds of
SNSs that can draw millions of people, with diverse technological affordances....show more content...
The profile is generated using the answers to these questions, which typically include descriptors
such as age, location, interests, and an "about me" section. Most sites also encourage users to
upload a profile photo. Some sites allow users to enhance their profiles by adding multimedia
content or modifying their profile 's look and feel. Others, such as Facebook, allow users to add
modules ("Applications") that enhance their profile. The visibility of a profile varies by site and
according to user discretion. By default, profiles on Friendster and Tribe.net are crawled by
search engines, making them visible to anyone, regardless of whether or not the viewer has an
account. Alternatively, LinkedIn controls what a viewer may see based on whether she or he has a
paid account. Sites like MySpace allow users to choose whether they want their profile to be public
or "Friends only." Facebook takes a different approach–by default, users who are part of the same
"network" can view each other 's profiles, unless a profile owner has decided to deny permission to
those in their network. Structural variations around visibility and access are one of the primary ways
that SNSs differentiate themselves from each other. (Boyd, 2006) After joining a social network site,
users are prompted to identify others in the system with whom they have a relationship. The label for
these relationships differs depending on the site–popular terms include "Friends," "Contacts," and
"Fans."
