Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class
has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college
writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt
limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays
to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is
why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the
first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate
my voice more in my essays and I believe...show more content...
The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of
the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I
usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my
grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how
many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including
work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write
essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even
though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge
about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve
include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has
definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I
have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do
not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not
find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have
significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too

The Writing Process Essay
The Writing Process
Writing a paper on the writing process is pretty hard. The writing process is different from one
person to another. You come across questions like, 'What exactly is the writing process?'; and
'Must you follow one persons writing process if yours is different?'; This is where I came across
the answer to my questions, write however you wish to write. If one person likes free write first
and another person likes to write a draft first, let them do how they please.
The writing process is something that you figure out yourself as you go through school. I personally
think that is why they make us take English for so many years. Through the years, I found that some
teachers forced you to write certain ways. I believe that...show more content...
I don't agree with him. The only way for someone to improve his or her writing is if a peer reads
over it and explains what could be done to improve it.
In The Maker's Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscript, Murray says, 'Writers must learn to be their
own worst enemy'; (Murray 87). He is trying to say that when it comes to editing, you must be able
to accept criticism from others and be suspicious of it. Just because they say that you should
rearrange that paragraph doesn't necessarily mean you have to. The way you wrote the paragraph
could be in your own voice.
Your papers should be filled with your voice. Voice is what makes your writing personal. But your
voice could be different depending on what you write about. I would put a lot more of my feelings
in a paper about food, than a paper about how the polar ice caps are melting.
Revising and rewriting a paper is a common step in the writing process. Personally, I think your
paper would be crap if you skipped these steps but I'm sure someone has done it before. Every
writer has revised and rewritten a paper. Do you think that Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet in
one shot? I don't think so.
In conclusion, writing is up to the writer. If the writer decides to follow the formal writing process,
then that's their choice. Nothing should be forced when it comes to writing. Then the writer does not
put out their best work possible. Thank you for reading my

I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write
an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite
better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and
the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the
contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards.
Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different
methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall
theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content...
This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand
the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever
received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays
writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

The Requirements Of English 111 Essay
English 111 is typically the first course of English that a new college student is required to take. The
objectives of English 111 are for the students to develop adequate writing skills among a variety of
genres. The genres written about include a narrative, analysis, argument, evaluative, business letter,
memorandum, bibliography, and report. By the end of the course, students are expected to master
thesis development, revision, and writing as a recursive process. Along with learning a variety of
writing strategies, students benefitted the most during the final unit of research and inquiry.
Objectives of the research and inquiry unit were to develop the skills to recognize quality sources,
cite them correctly using the MLA format, and for students to develop the act of presenting found
information. English 111 is a valuable class for students since it is highly filled with pertinent
information.
Narrative
A narrative essay "describes events that people want to share with readers". Some events may
include a traumatic event, a life–lesson learned, or a triumph, the options are limitless. A narrative
must have a beginning, middle, and end to reach the reader and not confuse them. Metaphors and
other parts of speech are often used to allow the reader to get an accurate understanding of what
the author is trying to pursue. The objective of a narrative is to tell one story with a purpose, not a
list of stories to connect to the main story, or else the reader will be confused

Achieving A Personal Goal
In the beginning of the semester, I felt a little annoyed that I had to plan a personal goal. I was
afraid that I was going to fail once again during the journey of losing weight. My personal goal
was to lose five pounds by April 1, 2016. I had planned to achieve this goal by eating healthier
snacks, exercising, and meal prepping. Trying to achieve this goal was not easy. I had a constant
temptation of breaking my diet and I kept trying to buy fast food whenever I saw myself tight with
my school and work schedule. However, I was able to achieve my goal because I was meal prepping
every night, I kept an alarm on my phone to remind me when I should be exercising, I read articles
that provided me with a list of healthy foods, I carried a picture...show more content...

main models that served as a guide of which steps I need to take was the chain model. The chain
model I created for myself allowed me to visualize my available resources and it formed a
sequence of my possible decisions. Choosing healthier foods after being used to eating fast food
almost every day was a challenge. Every moment I was about to break my healthy eating habit; I
kept saying positive things to my self. Overall, I am very happy of my results and I am very
thankful that this class allowed me to achieve my personal

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be
where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on
the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths
that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an
English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do
that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content...
I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your
own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I
was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this
technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I
was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could
use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I
used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even
go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident
as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that

Essay on Effective Writing Is Important
Effective Writing is Important
I have become to notice, through my coursework, that writing well is a tool that everyone can
benefit from. Good writers will tell of many an occasion in which their talent has earned them
advancement; an advancement that comes to play not only in the job market but also for personal
gratification.
Fortunately, writing is a skill that can be both taught and practiced to a point at which virtual
perfection is reached. The many facets of writing can seem quite overwhelming to the novice. The
aspect of writing that most people are unaware of is the fact that it is actually broken down into just
a few basic principles. Because of the many benefits that proper voice, structure, and thesis
development bring to...show more content...
Voice is the key to getting the reader involved in anessay. Without it, the reader becomes passive
and the essay can not be comprehended. Most essays have the essential material, so the manner in
which the material is presented can make a difference. When voice is properly executed in an
essay, the reader can interact with the writing and make the necessary connections. The best
sportswriters in the country are experts in using voice. How else can one become involved in the
action? Without voice, a play by play description can become a tedious mass of words. Voice is a
logical facet of writing which, when properly executed, leads the path to effective writing.
Effective structure is a necessity in essay writing. Without it, a capable piece of writing can
become a nebulous maze of imperfection. Structure acts as a road map for the reader. When the
reader can follow the essay's structure, the essay as a whole becomes easier to comprehend. The
reader can follow the essay logically and therefore does not have to fill in his own gaps.
When a reader can read without stumbling across deformities, he is at bliss and proper structure can
lead to this bliss.
Finally, the actual development of the thesis is a key to effective writing. Again, the reader is
always the primary focus and the writing must adhere to his needs. The thesis statement provides a
basis for the essay; a basis for the reader. Once

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your
mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The
truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in
the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can
explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses.
Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before
taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and
unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I
struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to
the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class
that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the
whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for
navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I
have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in
English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

Basic Literacy Narrative
Markus Lee Professor Simonsen English 111 23PR 2/19/15 Literacy Narrative Basic literacy is the
ability to read and write, my literacy skills began to develop while I was a small child. It all
started with the bedtime stories my mother would read to be. It wasn't until I got to school that it
developed even more as teachers began to teach me how to read and write. I feel that in order to be
successful you need to learn how to read and right, that's why I took pride in learning it. I'm glad
that I learned that at a very early age. I notice that to get a good grade on my writings I had to
write how my teachers wanted me to write things. In the long run it did pay off because I got good
grades on my papers. Obviously you can see that I had to...show more content...
It would be a story that was passed down from the family, one she made up, or a book that she got
off of the bookshelf. Dr. Seuss, Clifford The Big Red Dog any children's book we had. Looking
back on it there was all ways a moral to a story that she read to me. There was never a time that
you couldn't take a good value away from one of the stories. As I moved up in grade level the
books started to become deeper and deeper. Throughout school there was always something to
read. There was "Dr. Seuss" in elementary school, "The Diary of Anne Frank" in middle school,
and "Romeo and Juliet" in high school, Literacy was all ways present in my school life.
Throughout all the book reports, and the note taking and analyzing of Shakespeare literature
there is without a doubt that my literacy knowledge has grown thanks to learning I have done in
school. I feel that we learn to read and write because we have that desire inside to want to succeed
and we know that it all starts here with learning to read and write. With all of that being said I say
the way in which my literacy skills have developed to this point all started with bedtime stories. I
think that this was the first start in most kids life and this is where we learn the basics. A book full
of words in which we thought were just pictures and symbols with no meaning to them at all. Soon
we learned that words did have meanings and that

Writing Is A Basic Skills
As we all know, writing is a basic skills in our life. It is a necessary skill for us to develop ourselves
and help us to do many things successfully. However, there is no doubt that writing can be
difficult and hard. To be honest, my writing skill is not wonderful. There are many mistakes will
be made in my essay, such as grammar mistakes, wrong spell of vocabulary and the logic of chaos,
which make me cannot write a excellent essay as I expect. So after knowing that I would be taking
CC112, I was really worried and uneasy. I was really afraid that I could not pass the class and make
my parents upset. However, I had to say that I really learned a lot from the class after the whole
semester. Not only the skills of writing, but also the analysis of the article, which make me feel
more confident than before. Now I want to share my own experience of skills that I learned from
the class. First of all, in our class, the style of studying is really excellent. It is not just we followed
what the teacher said as I thought before. On the one hand, we really had an active atmosphere in
our class. Professor Shelly enjoyed listening our own ideas and thoughts instead of she talking all
the class. So if we had some thoughts or questions, we will not be too shy to hide our thoughts and
be brave enough to ask or suggest with her encouragement. I found I understand the class and
learned how to use these knowledge easily in this atmosphere even my English is not well. On the

Writing Is Not Just A Basic Skill Analysis
Writing is just a basic skill, wrong that's a myth! Writing is complex and it's tough. Most college
students may know how to write. Many of them tend to think writing is just a basic skill and if you
are one of them you're wrong! College students who think writing is a basic skill, in my opinion,
need to change their way of thinking since it's just a myth. Writing is a complex and it's a tough skill
to master. I read an article, "Writing Is Not Just a Basic Skill", by Mark Richardson. I agree with
Richardson's way of thinking regarding this myth, this myth can be harmful to those students who
tend to think they know how to write just because they are familiar with grammatical usage,
mechanics and the format of an essay or assignment. On the contrary, when it comes to writing we
need to know how to use rhetoric and make your ideas and thoughts clear to be able to transmit what
we are talking about. With this in mind some of us might be familiar or may have strong skills in
grammatical usage, mechanics and structure skills. When writing, this...show more content...
Rhetoric has three basic elements audience, purpose and the context. The first element is the
audience which basically is to know who your audience is, who you are speaking to and who you
are targeting. The reason why you need to know your audience is for you to be able to write in a
way they will understand what you are talking about or what you are trying to convey. Second, you
need to know the purpose; every writer has a purpose for writing. In rhetoric the purpose is used to
persuade the audience and to influence the way they are going to think about what you are trying to
transmit. The third element is the context; context is the situation that refers to the circumstances
surrounding any writing situation and includes purpose, audience, and focus.

Essay on Self-Analysis
Self–Analysis
Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical
procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not
allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for
simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread.
My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing
because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer.

I can write a thesis that will give an overview about what main topic of the paper is and what other
elements will be addressed in the paper. From taking this course I have been able to improve
many of my weaknesses, but there are still some that I need to work on. Overall I am becoming
better at not procrastinating as much as I used to. This class has helped me to learn to take the
little steps along the way because then there will not be as much work to do towards the end.
This has also made me realize that the final product of my writing will turn out better because it
will have had more time to develop, which means that there would have been more opportunities
to proofread. I think by learning many styles of writing, such as paraphrasing, summarizing,
analyzing, and researching; it has enabled me to be able to write more broadly. By knowing how
to correctly use all of these kinds of writing styles, it will help me in the future for other classes
because I will have the knowledge that I need to write these types of papers. I still procrastinate
sometimes, but not as much as I used to. I will be able to improve on this as time goes along
because I will become more motivated by seeing the end result, which usually would be better

My Struggles with English Composition Essay
My Struggles with English Composition
"...As for all the seniors, I want you to challenge yourselves this year and don't think you're going to
cruise through to graduation."–Mrs. Smith, County High School. Although some seniors in high
school refuse to take a hard schedule, I decided to take a challenging composition course my last
year of high school and learned more than ever before from it. My teacher, Mr. Bacz, focused
mostly on vocabulary, grammar, and how to right an essay. Each one of these subjects combined to
give me a year of hard work, which eventually paid off.
Since, I have always struggled in English, I thought this class was just going to be another hardship.

Along with vocabulary, grammar is another area in which I had problems. For instance, I was still
getting confused about proper sentence structure. I worked on this by completing a 30 page
workbook full of different sentences to assist me. From learning verbs to compound–complex
sentences the worksheets covered it all. I was starting to realize this class and Mr. Horbacz were
all about fine tuning me for my big transition into college. The next thing I did was learn how to
organize my thoughts onto paper and write an essay. I knew how to write a basic five paragraph
essay, but my skills were limited. These are all things I struggled with at the beginning of the year,
but soon I started to grow in each area.
After the first couple of months, improvements in my school work were beginning to show, and I
liked it. My vocabulary abilities were revealing themselves as well. For example, when I would
read homework in other classes the words that would sometimes confuse me began to make sense. I
would also listen to other people's conversations on the street and it seemed as if the vocabulary
words that I had just studied the week before, could be heard. It was the weirdest thing. Likewise,
my grammar was developing nicely. For instance, when I would read books I could see the
different ways sentences were portrayed. Things that I never picked up before were coming to me
so much easier. This class that

The Five Basic Rules Of Narrative Writing
The five basic rules of narrative writing can be applied to any report writing situation and will
allow for the successful completion of any investigative report. Many of these reports were
established to help investigators achieve in their writing and allow them to complete the writing
task as quickly as possible so they can get the information. In addition to the five basic rules of
narrative writing the investigator can do other things as well to develop the report and improve its
professional quality towards the report. The first rule of narrative writing is called first person.
When writing a report or during the time someone gives you information you should always write
in the first person and refer to yourself as "I" or "me". As the writes of an investigative report you
are always correct in using the personal pronouns "I" and "me" when referring to yourself. (Biggs,
Michael, 17) The second rule of narrative writing is called past tense. The past tense is the tense that
is most commonly used to describe events or actions that have already occurred which means by
writing a report using past tense can develop consistency and can make the report easier to read. (
Biggs, Michael, 17) The third rule of narrative writing is called active voice. The active voice is the
way of writing that shows action that someone is doing and with a passive voice that is caused by
someone who is having something done to them.( Biggs, Michael, 18) The fourth rule of narrative
writing is

The First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay
The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. A professor may give a
topic to be written about, but in some cases that may not happen. The first step is to pick a topic.
The topic will serve as your thesis. You want to pick a topic that you are relatively knowledgeable
about so you are not completely in the dark. By picking a topic that you know even a little about,
will take away the anxiety of not knowing where to start or what to write about. If you chose to
challenge yourself and write a paper about something you are novice about, then you want to pick
a topic that is broad enough to find enough information about. For example, if you want to write a
paper about cars, do not make cars what your paper is about, because although it is a broad topic
it is also somewhat narrow. Try to broaden your topic buy changing it to, "how cars have changed
our lives." Changing your topic to a more argumentative thesis gives you a pinpoint area to write
about and leaves the door open to give you more to write about. The second step, and what I believe
to be the most important step is locating sources to support your thesis. A researchessay without
sources becomes an opinion essay, and that is what you as the writer want to stay away from.
Sources make your essay more creditable. If your essay is about "how technology has benefited
students and teachers in the classrooms," then you should find sources that are about how
technology is used in

English 101 Made Me a Better Writer
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their
goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was
astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also
learned a lot about writing that I hadn't learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I
had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my
writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on
essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better
writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the
beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent
too much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays
to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and classmates made on my essays were truly
helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we
went over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the
paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter when I started writing some of my essays
for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first. After a while of brainstorming
ideas and seeing examples the teacher

Guide To Writing A Basic Essay

  • 1. Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe...show more content... The most important improvement for me in this course was on my grammar. I was not aware of the comma rules before. It was shocking to see where commas are to be put and the places that I usually miss. The Hacker lessons we did in and out of class on commas have improved my grammar significantly. Looking back through all of my graded essays it is unbelievable how many commas I have actually missed. Also, writing the essays in MLA format and including work cited entries and quotations, has helped me become more comfortable with it. When I write essays now, I do not hesitate or get anxious if I have to add a work cited entry. However, even though I have know a little bit more of when to use commas and have a little bit more knowledge about grammar there is still a lot of room for improvement. Some areas where I need to improve include transitions between paragraphs, being to repetitive, and my conclusions. This class has definitely helped me make my transitions better; however they still could use some improvement. I have to make sure that the reader can comprehend my thought process and that my transitions do not get in the way of the flow of the paper. In some of the rough drafts for my essays I could not find links between paragraphs at all but after work shopping in class I believe that they have significantly improved. I also need to make sure that I do not repeat the same ideas or words too many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Writing Process Essay The Writing Process Writing a paper on the writing process is pretty hard. The writing process is different from one person to another. You come across questions like, 'What exactly is the writing process?'; and 'Must you follow one persons writing process if yours is different?'; This is where I came across the answer to my questions, write however you wish to write. If one person likes free write first and another person likes to write a draft first, let them do how they please. The writing process is something that you figure out yourself as you go through school. I personally think that is why they make us take English for so many years. Through the years, I found that some teachers forced you to write certain ways. I believe that...show more content... I don't agree with him. The only way for someone to improve his or her writing is if a peer reads over it and explains what could be done to improve it. In The Maker's Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscript, Murray says, 'Writers must learn to be their own worst enemy'; (Murray 87). He is trying to say that when it comes to editing, you must be able to accept criticism from others and be suspicious of it. Just because they say that you should rearrange that paragraph doesn't necessarily mean you have to. The way you wrote the paragraph could be in your own voice. Your papers should be filled with your voice. Voice is what makes your writing personal. But your voice could be different depending on what you write about. I would put a lot more of my feelings in a paper about food, than a paper about how the polar ice caps are melting. Revising and rewriting a paper is a common step in the writing process. Personally, I think your paper would be crap if you skipped these steps but I'm sure someone has done it before. Every writer has revised and rewritten a paper. Do you think that Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet in one shot? I don't think so. In conclusion, writing is up to the writer. If the writer decides to follow the formal writing process, then that's their choice. Nothing should be forced when it comes to writing. Then the writer does not put out their best work possible. • 3. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content... This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Requirements Of English 111 Essay English 111 is typically the first course of English that a new college student is required to take. The objectives of English 111 are for the students to develop adequate writing skills among a variety of genres. The genres written about include a narrative, analysis, argument, evaluative, business letter, memorandum, bibliography, and report. By the end of the course, students are expected to master thesis development, revision, and writing as a recursive process. Along with learning a variety of writing strategies, students benefitted the most during the final unit of research and inquiry. Objectives of the research and inquiry unit were to develop the skills to recognize quality sources, cite them correctly using the MLA format, and for students to develop the act of presenting found information. English 111 is a valuable class for students since it is highly filled with pertinent information. Narrative A narrative essay "describes events that people want to share with readers". Some events may include a traumatic event, a life–lesson learned, or a triumph, the options are limitless. A narrative must have a beginning, middle, and end to reach the reader and not confuse them. Metaphors and other parts of speech are often used to allow the reader to get an accurate understanding of what the author is trying to pursue. The objective of a narrative is to tell one story with a purpose, not a list of stories to connect to the main story, or else the reader will be confused Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Achieving A Personal Goal In the beginning of the semester, I felt a little annoyed that I had to plan a personal goal. I was afraid that I was going to fail once again during the journey of losing weight. My personal goal was to lose five pounds by April 1, 2016. I had planned to achieve this goal by eating healthier snacks, exercising, and meal prepping. Trying to achieve this goal was not easy. I had a constant temptation of breaking my diet and I kept trying to buy fast food whenever I saw myself tight with my school and work schedule. However, I was able to achieve my goal because I was meal prepping every night, I kept an alarm on my phone to remind me when I should be exercising, I read articles that provided me with a list of healthy foods, I carried a picture...show more content... The chain model I created for myself allowed me to visualize my available resources and it formed a sequence of my possible decisions. Choosing healthier foods after being used to eating fast food almost every day was a challenge. Every moment I was about to break my healthy eating habit; I kept saying positive things to my self. • 6. Essay About My English Class I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content... I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into the writer I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay on Effective Writing Is Important Effective Writing is Important I have become to notice, through my coursework, that writing well is a tool that everyone can benefit from. Good writers will tell of many an occasion in which their talent has earned them advancement; an advancement that comes to play not only in the job market but also for personal gratification. Fortunately, writing is a skill that can be both taught and practiced to a point at which virtual perfection is reached. The many facets of writing can seem quite overwhelming to the novice. The aspect of writing that most people are unaware of is the fact that it is actually broken down into just a few basic principles. Because of the many benefits that proper voice, structure, and thesis development bring to...show more content... Voice is the key to getting the reader involved in anessay. Without it, the reader becomes passive and the essay can not be comprehended. Most essays have the essential material, so the manner in which the material is presented can make a difference. When voice is properly executed in an essay, the reader can interact with the writing and make the necessary connections. The best sportswriters in the country are experts in using voice. How else can one become involved in the action? Without voice, a play by play description can become a tedious mass of words. Voice is a logical facet of writing which, when properly executed, leads the path to effective writing. Effective structure is a necessity in essay writing. Without it, a capable piece of writing can become a nebulous maze of imperfection. Structure acts as a road map for the reader. When the reader can follow the essay's structure, the essay as a whole becomes easier to comprehend. The reader can follow the essay logically and therefore does not have to fill in his own gaps. When a reader can read without stumbling across deformities, he is at bliss and proper structure can lead to this bliss. Finally, the actual development of the thesis is a key to effective writing. Again, the reader is always the primary focus and the writing must adhere to his needs. The thesis statement provides a basis for the essay; a basis for the reader. • 8. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. • 9. Basic Literacy Narrative Markus Lee Professor Simonsen English 111 23PR 2/19/15 Literacy Narrative Basic literacy is the ability to read and write, my literacy skills began to develop while I was a small child. It all started with the bedtime stories my mother would read to be. It wasn't until I got to school that it developed even more as teachers began to teach me how to read and write. I feel that in order to be successful you need to learn how to read and right, that's why I took pride in learning it. I'm glad that I learned that at a very early age. I notice that to get a good grade on my writings I had to write how my teachers wanted me to write things. In the long run it did pay off because I got good grades on my papers. Obviously you can see that I had to...show more content... It would be a story that was passed down from the family, one she made up, or a book that she got off of the bookshelf. Dr. Seuss, Clifford The Big Red Dog any children's book we had. Looking back on it there was all ways a moral to a story that she read to me. There was never a time that you couldn't take a good value away from one of the stories. As I moved up in grade level the books started to become deeper and deeper. Throughout school there was always something to read. There was "Dr. Seuss" in elementary school, "The Diary of Anne Frank" in middle school, and "Romeo and Juliet" in high school, Literacy was all ways present in my school life. Throughout all the book reports, and the note taking and analyzing of Shakespeare literature there is without a doubt that my literacy knowledge has grown thanks to learning I have done in school. I feel that we learn to read and write because we have that desire inside to want to succeed and we know that it all starts here with learning to read and write. With all of that being said I say the way in which my literacy skills have developed to this point all started with bedtime stories. I think that this was the first start in most kids life and this is where we learn the basics. A book full of words in which we thought were just pictures and symbols with no meaning to them at all. • 10. Writing Is A Basic Skills As we all know, writing is a basic skills in our life. It is a necessary skill for us to develop ourselves and help us to do many things successfully. However, there is no doubt that writing can be difficult and hard. To be honest, my writing skill is not wonderful. There are many mistakes will be made in my essay, such as grammar mistakes, wrong spell of vocabulary and the logic of chaos, which make me cannot write a excellent essay as I expect. So after knowing that I would be taking CC112, I was really worried and uneasy. I was really afraid that I could not pass the class and make my parents upset. However, I had to say that I really learned a lot from the class after the whole semester. Not only the skills of writing, but also the analysis of the article, which make me feel more confident than before. Now I want to share my own experience of skills that I learned from the class. First of all, in our class, the style of studying is really excellent. It is not just we followed what the teacher said as I thought before. On the one hand, we really had an active atmosphere in our class. Professor Shelly enjoyed listening our own ideas and thoughts instead of she talking all the class. So if we had some thoughts or questions, we will not be too shy to hide our thoughts and be brave enough to ask or suggest with her encouragement. I found I understand the class and learned how to use these knowledge easily in this atmosphere even my English is not well. On the other hand, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Many of them tend to think writing is just a basic skill and if you are one of them you're wrong! College students who think writing is a basic skill, in my opinion, need to change their way of thinking since it's just a myth. Writing is a complex and it's a tough skill to master. I read an article, "Writing Is Not Just a Basic Skill", by Mark Richardson. I agree with Richardson's way of thinking regarding this myth, this myth can be harmful to those students who tend to think they know how to write just because they are familiar with grammatical usage, mechanics and the format of an essay or assignment. On the contrary, when it comes to writing we need to know how to use rhetoric and make your ideas and thoughts clear to be able to transmit what we are talking about. With this in mind some of us might be familiar or may have strong skills in grammatical usage, mechanics and structure skills. When writing, this...show more content... Rhetoric has three basic elements audience, purpose and the context. The first element is the audience which basically is to know who your audience is, who you are speaking to and who you are targeting. The reason why you need to know your audience is for you to be able to write in a way they will understand what you are talking about or what you are trying to convey. Second, you need to know the purpose; every writer has a purpose for writing. In rhetoric the purpose is used to persuade the audience and to influence the way they are going to think about what you are trying to transmit. The third element is the context; context is the situation that refers to the circumstances surrounding any writing situation and includes purpose, audience, and focus. • 15. Essay on Self-Analysis Self–Analysis Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for simple grammatical errors that could have been avoided if I would have had the time to proofread. My writing styles have many strengths and weaknesses and I have been able to improve my writing because of them. I have learned from my strengths and weaknesses how to become a better writer. In my writing, I have many strengths, some that which I have developed through this course and some that I already had. Before this...show more content... I can write a thesis that will give an overview about what main topic of the paper is and what other elements will be addressed in the paper. From taking this course I have been able to improve many of my weaknesses, but there are still some that I need to work on. Overall I am becoming better at not procrastinating as much as I used to. This class has helped me to learn to take the little steps along the way because then there will not be as much work to do towards the end. This has also made me realize that the final product of my writing will turn out better because it will have had more time to develop, which means that there would have been more opportunities to proofread. I think by learning many styles of writing, such as paraphrasing, summarizing, analyzing, and researching; it has enabled me to be able to write more broadly. By knowing how to correctly use all of these kinds of writing styles, it will help me in the future for other classes because I will have the knowledge that I need to write these types of papers. I still procrastinate sometimes, but not as much as I used to. I will be able to improve on this as time goes along because I will become more motivated by seeing the end result, which usually would be better grades. Overall I think that my most of my writing habits have improved and for the ones that have not I know what they are and what I need to do to improve them. • 16. My Struggles with English Composition Essay My Struggles with English Composition "...As for all the seniors, I want you to challenge yourselves this year and don't think you're going to cruise through to graduation."–Mrs. Smith, County High School. Although some seniors in high school refuse to take a hard schedule, I decided to take a challenging composition course my last year of high school and learned more than ever before from it. My teacher, Mr. Bacz, focused mostly on vocabulary, grammar, and how to right an essay. Each one of these subjects combined to give me a year of hard work, which eventually paid off. Since, I have always struggled in English, I thought this class was just going to be another hardship. It's not that I ever got bad grades in English, it's...show more content... Along with vocabulary, grammar is another area in which I had problems. For instance, I was still getting confused about proper sentence structure. I worked on this by completing a 30 page workbook full of different sentences to assist me. From learning verbs to compound–complex sentences the worksheets covered it all. I was starting to realize this class and Mr. Horbacz were all about fine tuning me for my big transition into college. The next thing I did was learn how to organize my thoughts onto paper and write an essay. I knew how to write a basic five paragraph essay, but my skills were limited. These are all things I struggled with at the beginning of the year, but soon I started to grow in each area. After the first couple of months, improvements in my school work were beginning to show, and I liked it. My vocabulary abilities were revealing themselves as well. For example, when I would read homework in other classes the words that would sometimes confuse me began to make sense. I would also listen to other people's conversations on the street and it seemed as if the vocabulary words that I had just studied the week before, could be heard. It was the weirdest thing. Likewise, my grammar was developing nicely. For instance, when I would read books I could see the different ways sentences were portrayed. Things that I never picked up before were coming to me so much easier. This class that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Five Basic Rules Of Narrative Writing The five basic rules of narrative writing can be applied to any report writing situation and will allow for the successful completion of any investigative report. Many of these reports were established to help investigators achieve in their writing and allow them to complete the writing task as quickly as possible so they can get the information. In addition to the five basic rules of narrative writing the investigator can do other things as well to develop the report and improve its professional quality towards the report. The first rule of narrative writing is called first person. When writing a report or during the time someone gives you information you should always write in the first person and refer to yourself as "I" or "me". As the writes of an investigative report you are always correct in using the personal pronouns "I" and "me" when referring to yourself. (Biggs, Michael, 17) The second rule of narrative writing is called past tense. The past tense is the tense that is most commonly used to describe events or actions that have already occurred which means by writing a report using past tense can develop consistency and can make the report easier to read. • 18. The First And Hardest Part Of Writing An Essay The first and hardest part of writing an essay is figuring out how to start. A professor may give a topic to be written about, but in some cases that may not happen. The first step is to pick a topic. The topic will serve as your thesis. You want to pick a topic that you are relatively knowledgeable about so you are not completely in the dark. By picking a topic that you know even a little about, will take away the anxiety of not knowing where to start or what to write about. If you chose to challenge yourself and write a paper about something you are novice about, then you want to pick a topic that is broad enough to find enough information about. For example, if you want to write a paper about cars, do not make cars what your paper is about, because although it is a broad topic it is also somewhat narrow. Try to broaden your topic buy changing it to, "how cars have changed our lives." Changing your topic to a more argumentative thesis gives you a pinpoint area to write about and leaves the door open to give you more to write about. The second step, and what I believe to be the most important step is locating sources to support your thesis. A researchessay without sources becomes an opinion essay, and that is what you as the writer want to stay away from. Sources make your essay more creditable. If your essay is about "how technology has benefited students and teachers in the classrooms," then you should find sources that are about how technology is used in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent too much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and classmates made on my essays were truly helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we went over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter when I started writing some of my essays for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first.
