King Edward I of England wanted to gain the throne of Scotland by arranging a marriage between his son and the daughter of the Scottish king. In 1296, when the Scottish king died without an heir, Scottish nobles asked Edward to choose a new king for Scotland. William Wallace was a legendary Scottish figure who led resistance against the English. Robert the Bruce was a Scottish king who led the Scots to a famous victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314, regaining Scottish independence.
