Localturnon artist Vamsi Krishna (Mumbai)
1. #localturnon: What is the history to your taking up Music?
How did it come into being, your journey?
#VamsiKrishna: I have always had the strange passion for
music. In vacations I used to spend hours and hours listening to
the radio and cassettes of my favourite artists. But I truly
opened up to the dream of becoming a singer when I was
selected for a musical in my school – I lived and breathed
those songs every second of my life. I was that geek who
knew every word of everyone else’s songs too!
When I passed out, I joined a hip-hop crew called DNOAX.
That’s where my journey of song writing, performing and
creating music really began. We toured the country and
dropped an album and the ecstasy the whole process gave me,
decided my future and my fate. (smiling)
#localturnon: So who are your favourites/ Icons/ Role
Models in the field of music?
2. #VamsiKrishna: I used to worship Shania Twain when I
was a teen. Her conceptual song writing and the sheer
effortless beauty in her voice really inspired me to be like
her. Also, Beyonce for her amazing journey and excellence
in performance and Madonna for the fearless way in which
she expresses herself. The list is actually quite long, but these
3 have really taught me a lot!
#localturnon: How do rejuvenate your creative insights /
get the adrenalin going?
#VamsiKrishna: Well, when I write I listen to a lot of different
music- Arabic, chill, lounge, new age music - are my
favourite when I’m trying to get the creative juices flowing. For
adrenaline? I just dance like no one is watching. (she
chuckles)
#localturnon: Does your Music carry a message / a theme
or a story? If so can you share more on it?
#VamsiKrishna: I’m a woman in love. It comes the most
naturally to me, so I find myself writing songs that are sensual,
3. deep and soulful most of the times. I always try to use concepts
and words that are not too common. I love writing about
different aspects of life too- be it dark emotions or about
inner power. Also, I’m a nature lover, so I tend to use a lot
nature references in my song. When I write, I try to imagine,
if my mind and soul were to turn into music, what would they
sound like at this very moment?
#localturnon: Of all the performances you’ve given, which
is your favourite one and why?
#VamsiKrishna: Probably the one I did recently- at Pitaraa
the art box. It was an intimate event with few people, but
ones that were really listening to every song my band
performed- and connected with us on a different level.
Some of them also came upto us and told us that we’ve really
made them feel better about their lives- which was really very
special.
4. #localturnon: Do you have any interesting fan stories to
tell?
#VamsiKrishna: This is a tough one, because I don’t really
think I have any. But if this counts, I connected with this girl
while I was performing at one of the pub venues and she
literally did not let me leave after our gig. She made me sit
down with her ‘Best friends club’ and said that she has
kidnapped me and that I cannot leave till I jam with them. That
was sweet but hilarious.
#localturnon: Of all the music you’ve created, which is
your favourite one and why?
#VamsiKrishna: I love the song ‘Welcome to my world’ that
I created with my band Mesa. Because it just defines me as a
person. Like if I were to be a song, that one would be me. It has
5. elements of Indian, dubstep, rock- a blend just like me. And
also talks about inner power and beauty, which I believe in.
I get the goosies every time I perform the song!
#localturnon: Can you share about some funny incident
that happened on-stage / during performance / with you or
the other artists / stage members?
#VamsiKrishna: I was performing at an ad agency, where we
had very little space for our set up. And also, my guitarist’s
cable stopped working. So he had to use the stand mic. Now I
cannot stay still when I’m performing, I have to move around
6. like a wild animal. So every time I would move, I would
almost knock down my poor guitarist’s mic. And then
finally, I did knock it down. I did that while I was singing
‘this is it, the apocalypse’ from radioactive. Good times.
(Smiling)
#localturnon: How has the musical journey been so far for
you and what are you looking forward to now?
#VamsiKrishna: The journey so far has been the craziest,
and the most difficult too, I admit. Did MBA, did 3 jobs, quit
the last one a couple of months ago for finally pursuing
this fulltime. And ever since, by God’s grace, I have been
busier than ever, teaching music, making music,
performing etc. It’s really trying moneywise, and physically
challenging but never been happier.
7. #localturnon: Do you have any words of advice for
youngsters who are thinking of getting into this line?
#VamsiKrishna: Everyone will tell you to have a plan B- which
is understandable. But if you feel like music is the reason of
your entire existence and that you will go to any lengths to
make it happen, then ditch the plan B. Don’t waste your
time, you will not be able to do justice to either one of
them. Work hard, grind hard and be true to your soul.
