When I was 21, my father was diagnosed with throat cancer at the
start of the season of Lent. My family had no idea what was in store
for my dad or our family. He lost his ability to speak, but when
Easter came around, his voice slowly returned. Lent has always been
an important time of year for me. Not only have I used it as my
reconnection time with God, but I have used it as a period of
resetting, of discernment, and for seeking clarity.
As the season of Lent carries us from Valentineās Day to an April
Foolās Day Easter, we talk about our theme: Love making faithful
fools out of everyone. We put our trust in God to pull us out of the
darkness. Each week of Lent, our Wednesday small group meets to
share a meal, prayers, devotions, and an openness to learning a new
weekly Spiritual Discipline. All are still welcome to join us on
Wednesdays, for dinner and vespers at 6:15, devotional worship and
communion at 7pm, and our Spiritual Disciplines class at 7:30pm.
At the end of March, we will be entering into Holy Week. From
Palm Sunday to the Passion, you are invited to experience the
reason WHY we have been called to be Christians in the ļ¬rst place.
It is one thing to celebrate Palm Sunday and go straight to Easter
egg hunts and chocolate bunnies, but one cannot get to Easter
without going through the Passion of the Christ. Please see our Holy
Week offerings and consider participating in each of the events to
have a closer walk with Christ, including a Passover Seder Meal,
Tenebrae Service and Stations of the Cross with a special labyrinth
made by Rachel Mottaz and team!
Sending prayers and blessings for a transformational Lent!
Pastor AllisonĀ

the lawn from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. They offered ashes to our neighbors and even had Local News Crews
stop by to interview them from NBC4, Telemundo, & KTLA5. Worship took place in Boyer Chapel at
7:00 PM, following vespers and soup supper in the Lounge. The evening was spiritually uplifting and
centering for all involved. Ashes were imposed and communion was served.

6. The needs of the world are overwhelming. Children are orphans due to health epidemics. There are mountains
to move in the wake of earthquakes and tornadoes. Families are living without access to clean drinking water
throughout the world. It might seem foolish for someone to think that he or she can make a difference. It might
even seem foolish to think that our churches can make an impact on the world.
Paul wrote to the Corinthians, āThe message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing.ā However,
for those who have chosen this journey of walking in faith, this message of healing and hope the world so
desperately needs can be done āwith the power of God.āĀ
In fact, there is much that has already been done. Through the United Methodist Committee on Relief, we are
doing humanitarian relief work at home and around the world. We are doing the work of sustainable
development, helping people ļ¬nd ways to utilize resources in ways that strengthen the whole community. We are
working to improve global health by helping communities gain access to clean water and ļ¬ght against disease.
Through our gifts on UMCOR Sunday (formerly One Great Hour of Sharing), we have the opportunity to
keep taking the message of the cross ā messages of healing, hope and restoration ā to people in the wake of
disasters and to those living on the edge of poverty. This special offering underwrites UMCORās ācosts of doing
business.ā It helps UMCOR keep the promise that 100% of any gift to a speciļ¬c UMCOR project will go
toward that project, not administrative costs. Since 1940, when UMCOR's forerunner was established to meet
the needs of those suffering overseas at the onset of World War II, we have continued to respond to those in
desperate need - today throughout more than 80 countries.
The response of UMCOR isn't something "they" do. It's something "we" do. When you give, you equip Christ's
body to serve in his name. Your generous giving to UMCOR Sunday is what allows UMCOR to act as the arms
and legs of Christ's church, moving toward the most vulnerable in their darkest days. Convinced that all people
have God-given worth and dignity - without regard to race, religion or gender, together we are assisting those
impacted by crisis or chronic need.
UMCOR SUNDAY ā MARCH 4, 2018 ā the 4th Sunday of Lent
āTogether, we reach children, families and communities who have
experienced devastation in the wake of disaster.ā
Good Friday Stations is the Cross
March 30th, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
This year, following the Catholic tradition of the 13
Stations of the Cross recalling Jesusā journey along the
Via Dolorosa, we will walk the Protestant version of the
āWay of the Cross,ā as a meditative prayer walk. The
Stations will begin in the Sanctuary Narthex with 1 of
13 interactive Stations, and will culminate in a silent
walk on our home-made Labyrinth in the Social Hall.
You are invited to walk at your own pace, as the Stations
will be open from 6-8pm. The Stations are family
friendly and all are welcome. Instructions will be given at
the entrance of the sanctuary.

7. NEWS FROM RED BIRD MISSION
Ā By Lynn Yoshizumi
The Red Bird Dental Clinic Mobile Dentistry
is now setting up in senior centers and church
locations to do screenings. Avesis, a Managed
Care Organization in Kentucky, funded the
equipment through a grant.
Ā
The journalism class at Red Bird Christian
School released its ļ¬rst magazine, swaG
(students writing about God) under the tutelage
of Ms. Morgan, the new high school English
teacher. She is one of 3 new Christian teachers
God sent them this year. There are a total of
250 Pre-K through 12th grade students.
Ā
FUMC/NH supports Red Bird Mission with a
donation of $500 every year but individual
contributions are always needed. You might
consider donating to help pay for the travel and
mobile clinic costs for patients needing dental
care or to assist with the school or the many
community outreach programs.
Ā
Also, please remember to remove Box Tops for
Education labels from boxes of products such
as Kleenex, Cheerios and most other dry
cereals, Ziploc bags, Lysol and Hefty products,
Hamburger Helper, most Annieās products, to
name a few and bring them to Judy Palmer or
the church ofļ¬ce. These labels are a wonderful
way to support Red Bird.
CONGREGATIONAL CHARGE
CONFERENCE MEETING
Sunday, April 15th
12:15 PM
Mark your calendars for a special Charge
Conference for Spring 2018. Due to the untimely
death of Pastor Joey, under the extreme
circumstances of last fall, we had been unable to
complete our full rosters of Church leadership
when the 2017 Charge Conference was called.
Nominating slates for our church committees
leaders will be ofļ¬cially voted in by voting
members present at this called meeting. District
Superintendent Jim Powell has been asked to
convene the meeting, otherwise another Ordained
Elder will be assigned in his stead. We hope you are
able to attend this important meeting.
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP:
MEMBERSHIP & CONFIRMATION
CLASSES
In the United Methodist Church,Ā membership
requires active participation in a local
congregation. The vows of professing membership
thus include promises to faithfully participate
through prayers, presence, gifts, service and
witness in connection with a local congregation.Ā
If you would like to join North Hollywood FUMC
and be an active part in the community of faith,
which also includes voice and vote at Charge
Conference meetings, as well as becoming lay
leaders on our church committees, please consider
the following opportunities for Membership
Classes:
Join our Conļ¬rmation Class (meeting on March 4,
11, April 15, 22, and May 6, 13 from 9:15-10am
in Lounge OR our Membership Class refresher on
April 29, from 12-2pm, lunch included.
Please sign up with Patty Kelsey or Pastor Allison.
8. The Visioning committee met on February 11th to update the church vision plan. We had previously identiļ¬ed
seven long-term projects to improve our church. Some of those projects were removed from the current plan:
Create an Adult Sunday School ā We have a successful adult Sunday school up and running every other
week after the 8:15am service. So this project is complete!
Worship Music ā This project will be folded into a new Worship Committee that will look at ways to
improve worship services and the possibility of expanding our worship offerings.
Front of Church (curb appeal) ā This project is being taken over by Trustees. If you are interested in
helping with this project, please see Trustees Chair Phil Roche. You do not need to join Trustees to assist with
this project.
The following projects are ongoing:
Ā
Virtual Vision ā We have had several successes such as online giving and social media videos with Pastor
Allison. We will continue to explore social media outreach.
NoHo Theater District Outreach ā Engaging with the local theater community.
Ā
Community Volunteerism ā Engaging the community in mission projects as a combination of outreach
and service.
Youth and Children Program: We are developing a proposal to start a youth group and to add a Sunday
school class to better serve children of different ages.
We also added two new projects to our list:
Ā
Relational Groups ā Relational groups are groups formed around interests or demographics ā UMW,
UMM, and Ruth Circle are examples of relational groups. This team will look at revitalizing such groups as
āCreative Spirit,ā āMamas and Papas,ā and āSpur of the Moment,ā and consider what other groups might be
needed.
Ā
Worship Committee ā We have decided we need a Worship Committee. Many Methodist churches have
such a committee. We will work with Pastor Allison to determine the proper way to get this started.
Ā
If you are interested in any of these projects, please contact the church ofļ¬ce to be added to the project team.
If any project doesnāt get enough volunteers, it will be removed from the list. The Visioning Committee is an
open committee ā everyone from the congregation is invited to be a part of it.
