ā€¢ From our DS
Wonderful Churches of the North District,
We have had a year of challenges!Ā  We started the year with heavy rains,
we lost Pastor Joey McDonald unexpectedly, and we are still recovering
from the ļ¬res and digging out of the rubble and ashes. We have also had
many of our laity and pastors who have dealt with serious medical issues.
Many of you have shared aboutĀ the number of elderly members who have
moved out of the area or who have moved onto their place with the Lord.
It is a good thing that we are not the Body of Christ that depends upon
our circumstances to ļ¬nd hope. The Lord will bring life out of death, and
new growth out of ashes. Our Christmas theology instructs us to live in
The Hope which is guaranteed by Jesus with us!Ā  Immanuel! We are
celebrating Godā€™s commitment to be with us.
For those of you who have remained faithful to your churchā€™s mission and
ministry, let me say thank you. For those who have stayed current on all
expenses, thank you. For those of you who have paid your Apportionments
and full missionary support, thanks be to God.
For the churches who have not kept up with expenses and
Apportionments; we know that God has used you in mighty ways this year,
and bless your effort to be in ministry. I want to ask that you make an extra
push during Christmas this year. Let us celebrate our blessings of life and
hope by extending an invitation to give to those beyond our church.Ā
The Conference has made a commitment to reduce the apportioned
budget but we need to meet that challenge with paying as much as possible
in 2017.Ā  Please do not wait until the last day, however, the deadline for
2017 Apportionments is January 12, 2018.
Praying for you all,
Pastor Jim (Rev. James R. Powell)

WELCOME PASTOR ALLISON!
Sunday, January 14th - Listening Process with
Pastor Allison. During coffee fellowship in the
Lounge. Come share your hopes for our church.
Beginning January 1st, we welcome our Interim Pastor, The Rev. Allison
Mark, to NoHo FUMC!
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaiā€™i, Rev. Allison Kanani. A 3.5
generation Chinese American and 5th generation Japanese American
Pastorā€™s Kid, Pastor Allison and her 2 sisters, grew up with many church
ā€œaunties, uncles, and cousinsā€ at Waianae and Kilohana UMC, who
nurtured and supported her in her calling to ministry. Graduating from
University of Washington in Seattle in 2000, with degrees in Sociology,
American Ethnic Studies, and Communications, she returned to Hawaii and
worked for four years as a Christian Education Director (Kilohana), a
middle school typing instructor and Student Activities Coordinator, and
high school Speech and Debate Coach (simultaneously!).
Answering a call to ministry, she entered seminary at Paciļ¬c School of Religion in Berkeley in 2004, she
cultivated her passion for Peace & Justice ministries and Mission & Compassion work, serving ļ¬rst as Buena
Vista UMCā€™s Field Education Intern, and continued for two more years as their Minister of Young Adults and
Community Outreach, leading two mission trips to New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina Rebuild work (with
UMVIM), running Buena Vistaā€™s Community Developerā€™s Program (CDP) and Endowment, and working with
the community young people. She also served on the East Bayā€™s Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ)
in Oakland and worked on socio-economic issues with Rev. James Lawsonā€™s brother, Rev. Phil Lawson, and the
Cal-Nevada Philippine Human Rights Work, and the Kairos Response in the Holy Land.
In 2008, Pastor Allison was appointed to the Cal-Pac Annual Conference as the Associate Pastor at First UMC
Pasadena, the same year she married her husband, Andy Schwiebert, an ordained United Church of Christ
pastor. Her ministry portfolio included Youth, Young Adults, Pastoral Care, and Missions, Peace & Justice and
in seven years expanded to include Children and Family Ministries, Evangelism & Hospitality, Worship,
Administrative duties (Lay Leadership, SPRC, Trustees, Church Council), and supervision of staff and
Candidates for Ministry. She has led yearly mission and advocacy trips to Mexico, Philippines, Haiti, Palestine/
Israel, Arizona, and Hawaii. In February 2015, Rev. Mark was appointed to the Young Clergy Initiative a joint
collaborative of the Cal-Pac Annual Conference and Claremont School of Theology. YCI supported Young
People called into ordained ministry through workshops, retreats, internships, cultivating congregations in their
Culture of Call, and mentoring young people. Pastor Allison is also very engaged in the work of our Annual
Conference and community abroad.
Pastor Allison was the Associate Pastor for 1 1/2 years at Holman UMC before receiving a call from Bishop
Hagiya to be our Interim Pastor.
We would like to encourage that congregants please write Pastor Allison a welcome note and be sure to
introduce yourself at worship. We will have name tags available for you at the entrance of the Sanctuary. Please
wear them so our new Pastor will have an easier time learning all of our names.
NoHo FUMC looks forward to meeting Pastor Allison, her husband, Pastor Andy, and their daughters Kaira &
Amara in 2018. Please add them in your prayers as they make this transition during the busy Christmas season.
Bio taken from Holman UMC
Welcome Pastor Allison!
She also dabbled in student teaching at the University of Hawaii, ofļ¬ce administration, and nannying! During
that time back in Hawaiā€™i, she became more engaged with community organizing through Faith Action for
Community Equity (FACE), the interfaith justice organization that her father helped to create.
One of the greatest unmet needs within the Los Angeles Homeless Continuum of Care is housing,
appropriate guidance, counseling and mentorship for the Transitional Age Youth (TAY) population - young
adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are transitioning from state custody or foster care to
independence and self-sufļ¬ciency without the safety nets of support that the majority of young adults enjoy.
Many in this population become ensnared by chronic homelessness, periods of incarceration and an
ongoing struggle to live above the poverty line. Hope of the Valley is honored and compelled to help meet
this critical and essential need in the community.
The ļ¬rst week of January 2018, Hope of the Valley will open THE LANDING, a brand new 50-bed
housing facility for these young people. This new 15-bedroom facility will provide safe shelter, healthy meals
and a systematic plan to assist each young adult overcome any and all barriers that are preventing them
from healthy integration into adulthood. Onsite counseling and job training will be provided by Village
Family Services. The goal is that each young person enrolls in college, ļ¬nds gainful employment, and
develops mentally, socially and spiritually while saving their income to transition into independent
permanent housing and adulthood.
We are happy to announce that through our continued partnership with LA Family Housing, the North
Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry will be offering the services of an Outreach Worker on the 1st and 3rd
Mondays of each month. The role of Outreach is to assist and link individuals experiencing homelessness
to the right resources that can help get them on the path to housing. The program is onsite at the First
Christian Church of North Hollywood campus from 9 am to 12 noon. If you are interested in additional
information on the Outreach program, please visit the LA Family Housing website at www.lafh.org.
Ā
Additionally, we are pleased to share with you that we are implementing a volunteer program with the
Tierra del Sol Foundation to ļ¬ll some of our current volunteer needs. Established in 1971, Tierra del Solā€™s
mission is to empower people with disabilities to fulļ¬ll their potential and desire to become productive
citizens who are accepted, included and valued for the contributions they make to their community. For
more information on the Tierra del Sol Foundation, please visit their website at www.tierradelsol.org.
Ā
It is through partnerships like LA Family Housing and Tierra del Sol, as well as the support of
organizations and individuals such as yourself, that we are able to further our mission in our community
and make a larger impact on the lives of those in need. We thank you for your continued support and
dedication to our work in the community.

Good News January 2018

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net JANUARY 2018 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: ā€¢ Souper Bowl Sunday ā€¢ Congrats Tree Lot ā€¢ Welcome Pastor Allison ā€¢ Altar Flower List 2018 ā€¢ From our DS Wonderful Churches of the North District, We have had a year of challenges!Ā  We started the year with heavy rains, we lost Pastor Joey McDonald unexpectedly, and we are still recovering from the ļ¬res and digging out of the rubble and ashes. We have also had many of our laity and pastors who have dealt with serious medical issues. Many of you have shared aboutĀ the number of elderly members who have moved out of the area or who have moved onto their place with the Lord. It is a good thing that we are not the Body of Christ that depends upon our circumstances to ļ¬nd hope. The Lord will bring life out of death, and new growth out of ashes. Our Christmas theology instructs us to live in The Hope which is guaranteed by Jesus with us!Ā  Immanuel! We are celebrating Godā€™s commitment to be with us. For those of you who have remained faithful to your churchā€™s mission and ministry, let me say thank you. For those who have stayed current on all expenses, thank you. For those of you who have paid your Apportionments and full missionary support, thanks be to God. For the churches who have not kept up with expenses and Apportionments; we know that God has used you in mighty ways this year, and bless your effort to be in ministry. I want to ask that you make an extra push during Christmas this year. Let us celebrate our blessings of life and hope by extending an invitation to give to those beyond our church.Ā  The Conference has made a commitment to reduce the apportioned budget but we need to meet that challenge with paying as much as possible in 2017.Ā  Please do not wait until the last day, however, the deadline for 2017 Apportionments is January 12, 2018. Praying for you all, Pastor Jim (Rev. James R. Powell) North District Superintendent California- Paciļ¬c Annual Conference GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Grant Hagiya Bishop Rev. • 5. Beginning January 1st, we welcome our Interim Pastor, The Rev. Allison Mark, to NoHo FUMC! Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaiā€™i, Rev. Allison Kanani. A 3.5 generation Chinese American and 5th generation Japanese American Pastorā€™s Kid, Pastor Allison and her 2 sisters, grew up with many church ā€œaunties, uncles, and cousinsā€ at Waianae and Kilohana UMC, who nurtured and supported her in her calling to ministry. Graduating from University of Washington in Seattle in 2000, with degrees in Sociology, American Ethnic Studies, and Communications, she returned to Hawaii and worked for four years as a Christian Education Director (Kilohana), a middle school typing instructor and Student Activities Coordinator, and high school Speech and Debate Coach (simultaneously!). Answering a call to ministry, she entered seminary at Paciļ¬c School of Religion in Berkeley in 2004, she cultivated her passion for Peace & Justice ministries and Mission & Compassion work, serving ļ¬rst as Buena Vista UMCā€™s Field Education Intern, and continued for two more years as their Minister of Young Adults and Community Outreach, leading two mission trips to New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina Rebuild work (with UMVIM), running Buena Vistaā€™s Community Developerā€™s Program (CDP) and Endowment, and working with the community young people. She also served on the East Bayā€™s Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ) in Oakland and worked on socio-economic issues with Rev. James Lawsonā€™s brother, Rev. Phil Lawson, and the Cal-Nevada Philippine Human Rights Work, and the Kairos Response in the Holy Land. In 2008, Pastor Allison was appointed to the Cal-Pac Annual Conference as the Associate Pastor at First UMC Pasadena, the same year she married her husband, Andy Schwiebert, an ordained United Church of Christ pastor. Her ministry portfolio included Youth, Young Adults, Pastoral Care, and Missions, Peace & Justice and in seven years expanded to include Children and Family Ministries, Evangelism & Hospitality, Worship, Administrative duties (Lay Leadership, SPRC, Trustees, Church Council), and supervision of staff and Candidates for Ministry. She has led yearly mission and advocacy trips to Mexico, Philippines, Haiti, Palestine/ Israel, Arizona, and Hawaii. In February 2015, Rev. Mark was appointed to the Young Clergy Initiative a joint collaborative of the Cal-Pac Annual Conference and Claremont School of Theology. YCI supported Young People called into ordained ministry through workshops, retreats, internships, cultivating congregations in their Culture of Call, and mentoring young people. Pastor Allison is also very engaged in the work of our Annual Conference and community abroad. Pastor Allison was the Associate Pastor for 1 1/2 years at Holman UMC before receiving a call from Bishop Hagiya to be our Interim Pastor. We would like to encourage that congregants please write Pastor Allison a welcome note and be sure to introduce yourself at worship. We will have name tags available for you at the entrance of the Sanctuary. Please wear them so our new Pastor will have an easier time learning all of our names. NoHo FUMC looks forward to meeting Pastor Allison, her husband, Pastor Andy, and their daughters Kaira & Amara in 2018. Please add them in your prayers as they make this transition during the busy Christmas season. Bio taken from Holman UMC Welcome Pastor Allison! She also dabbled in student teaching at the University of Hawaii, ofļ¬ce administration, and nannying! During that time back in Hawaiā€™i, she became more engaged with community organizing through Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE), the interfaith justice organization that her father helped to create.
  • 6. One of the greatest unmet needs within the Los Angeles Homeless Continuum of Care is housing, appropriate guidance, counseling and mentorship for the Transitional Age Youth (TAY) population - young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are transitioning from state custody or foster care to independence and self-sufļ¬ciency without the safety nets of support that the majority of young adults enjoy. Many in this population become ensnared by chronic homelessness, periods of incarceration and an ongoing struggle to live above the poverty line. Hope of the Valley is honored and compelled to help meet this critical and essential need in the community. The ļ¬rst week of January 2018, Hope of the Valley will open THE LANDING, a brand new 50-bed housing facility for these young people. This new 15-bedroom facility will provide safe shelter, healthy meals and a systematic plan to assist each young adult overcome any and all barriers that are preventing them from healthy integration into adulthood. Onsite counseling and job training will be provided by Village Family Services. The goal is that each young person enrolls in college, ļ¬nds gainful employment, and develops mentally, socially and spiritually while saving their income to transition into independent permanent housing and adulthood. We are happy to announce that through our continued partnership with LA Family Housing, the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry will be offering the services of an Outreach Worker on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. The role of Outreach is to assist and link individuals experiencing homelessness to the right resources that can help get them on the path to housing. The program is onsite at the First Christian Church of North Hollywood campus from 9 am to 12 noon. If you are interested in additional information on the Outreach program, please visit the LA Family Housing website at www.lafh.org. Ā  Additionally, we are pleased to share with you that we are implementing a volunteer program with the Tierra del Sol Foundation to ļ¬ll some of our current volunteer needs. Established in 1971, Tierra del Solā€™s mission is to empower people with disabilities to fulļ¬ll their potential and desire to become productive citizens who are accepted, included and valued for the contributions they make to their community. For more information on the Tierra del Sol Foundation, please visit their website at www.tierradelsol.org. Ā  It is through partnerships like LA Family Housing and Tierra del Sol, as well as the support of organizations and individuals such as yourself, that we are able to further our mission in our community and make a larger impact on the lives of those in need.
