not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
1. Justein Anne was telling an anecdote
to the audience with the intention to
entertain them, but she did not show any
signs of enjoyment or excitement on her
face and in her voice.
Determine whether the situation shows a desirable
behavior before, during, or after public speaking or
not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
2. Because she felt she had not totally
prepared for the presentation, Princess Kate
apologized to the audience in advance if there
would be any glitch or inaccuracies in her
delivery.
Determine whether the situation shows a desirable behavior
before, during, or after public speaking or
not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
3. Cassie Aeris forgot some lines from
her memorized speech. Instead of
making it too obvious that she forgot a
part of the speech, she just made up
something that
was still within the idea in her speech.
Determine whether the situation shows a desirable behavior
before, during, or after public speaking or
not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
4. Even after seeing that some of the members of the
audience struggle hearing him from a far, Charlie
continues to use his softest voice.
5. Despite having a broad understanding of the topic she
was assigned to deliver before the newly hired teachers,
Cecilia still prepared an outline of the points she was
planning to make during her presentation.
Determine whether the situation shows a desirable
behavior before, during, or after public speaking or
not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
6. Lawrence did not automatically start
saying any word as he stepped on the
stage. He first made a sweeping eye
contact at the audience and smiled.
7. The audience members are leaning their ears closer to the
source of sound. Despite noticing the audience’s gestures,
Regenia, did not bother turning up the volume of her
voice.
Determine whether the situation shows a desirable behavior
before, during, or after public speaking or
not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
8. Josephine accepted the invitation to deliver
an inspirational talk without asking who the
audience members are and where the venue
will be.
9. Jovanni was invited to talk about professionalism at work
before groups of teachers, doctors, engineers, and other
professionals. He came to the venue wearing just t-shirt
and a pair of tattered jeans.
Determine whether the situation shows a desirable
behavior before, during, or after public speaking or
not.
Raise a hand and say YES or NO.
10. In the middle of his talk, Lory Mae
started feeling uneasy, so she talked a
little faster to end her speech and be
off the stage already.
What is Public Speaking?
It is the process of communicating message
to a generally large audience.
The information that is communicated in
public speaking is rather different from just
talking to a crowd of people because it is
purposeful.
Today's
Discussion
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
1. Know your audience and the venue.
Before accepting any speaking
engagements, it pays to ask the following
questions:
✓ What is the occasion?
✓ Who are the members of the audience?
✓ How many people will be there?
✓ Where is the venue?
✓ When is the event going to happen?
BEFORE
the
Speech....
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
Surely, after having gone through series of
writing tasks, you are now able to write an
effective speech to deliver.
You may consider doing the following:
✓ Create slides containing just the key
points to guide you through your speech.
✓
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
b. Practice delivering your speech with the
presentations you have created.
c. Use the key points you have included in
your slides as your guide or
reference point for discussion.
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
d. Record yourself delivering your speech and
ask someone, who you believe,
can provide you with honest feedback and
suggestions to improve your
performance.
e. Make sure you know the correct pronunciation
and meaning of some technical words
mentioned in your speech so that you can say
them correctly as correct
pronunciation and knowledge of industry
language will boost your credibility
(Scientifica, 2015).
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
1. Own the Stage
Utilize the space of the stage. If you need to
move around, do so. Move
around freely but do not exaggerate that it
already distracts the audience.
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
2. Establish connection with the
audience.
a. Maintain eye contact without looking or
appearing creepy.
b. Sound and look engaging with your
voice and your gestures
c. Engage the audience by asking some
questions if you must just to keep them
awake or check whether they were able
to follow your talk.
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
3. Aim for Clarity
a. Project a volume that is audible in the entire
venue.
b. Vary your pace or rate of speech.
c. Vary your pitch.
d. Pronounce the syllables of the word/s clearly.
e. Pause to give your audience time to process
what they have just heard
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
4. Observe and adjust.
Make
necessary adjustments in your volume and
pace depending on the reaction of the
audience.
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
1. Write down impressions.
You may consider asking yourself these
questions:
✓ How I felt the speech went?
✓ What was the best part of my speech?
✓ Which part of my speech needs improvement?
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
2. Review your performance
Reviewing your previous performances
also allows you to avoid using the same
anecdotes or stories or even the same
clothes especially if you have been
speaking before the same groups of
people over and over.
Tips to Get the Most Out of
Your Speaking Engagement
3. Read audience evaluation (if at all
available)
When the audience members are asked to
evaluate your performance, ask for
a copy of the summary of the evaluations.
Look for patterns in their evaluations, then
start converting your weakness into
strength the next time you speak.
✓ Boost confidence and
develop personal
satisfaction.
✓ Develop critical
thinking.
✓ Develop critical
thinking.
✓ Widen vocabulary.
✓ Expand social and
professional network.
✓ Build leadership
skills.
✓ Develop
performance and other
skills.
