It is VERY different from the existing model that CIOs are familiar with today.Look at this graph. It describes the lifecycle for traditional enterprise software. You do the initial deployment; and you spend a lot of effort planning for it – Do we have the right hardware? Is it all tested” How much capacity do we need? What about vendor license negotiations, etc…? Then you deploy it; and wait for the next software release. There’s no new innovation and no improvements; it’s just maintenance. And then you go through the same painful process again, kicked off with your friendly enterprise software sales rep putting a 5 year contract in front of you with escalating minimum commits. It sucks!I have spoken with a lot of customers using OpenStack already. They are all locked on the release they started with. That is absolutely crazy given how fast this project is running! Sony, one of the earliest and smartest adopters, is on Diablo which is 18 months old. As is HP. Why? They don’t know how to get away from the enterprise software model because they simply don’t have the tools and know how. They are not Rackspace.And it only gets worse. Assume the first graph was just for a single piece of your architecture- you have to do that for a lot of the other pieces too!

You enter where you want and just ride the curve. Rackspace will do all of the work for you. You just use the API or run in our VMs. We take care of EVERYTHING. As a result, you get brand new features as soon as they are ready. You get immediate bug fixes. We patch it. We upgrade it. We plan it. YOU CONSUME IT. It’s an amazing model. As a result, this becomes a continuum. Your experience is better, you get a better product much faster. It’s more reliable and its more affordable than doing it yourself. And, as the curve indicates, the benefits start to go vertical as we get much better at running the cloud for you. This is the cloud service model!And while this started with public cloud, we see no reason this can’t be done anywhere. Our private cloud business is about moving enterprise IT from the stair step model they know so well, to the cloud model they all covet. Make no mistake. This is a revolution, not an evolution. We are not trying to be better than our enterprise software competitors. We are trying to completely destroy their model.
Hubspot built their company based on the understanding that marketing is changing. Consumers and businesses no longer want bulk content pushed to them, they want to receive information that is relevant and useful. In order to target information to users more effectively, much more analysis needs to be done on the data that exists, or is being collected, from marketing campaigns. So Hubspot built just such a platform, one that covers the entire range of marketing activities for a company: content generation, capture, social media, lead nurturing, email marketing and marketing analytics. Over the last 6 years, their analytics and other services have grown into a highly complex and intensive platform, with the aim to become “the only marketing software that your company will ever need”.As their platform and customer base grew they began to use cloud technology, in addition to dedicated hosting at Rackspace. Programmatic access and automation of cloud enabled them adopt a continuous integration and continuous deployment model for the software development. Their cloud usage was originally focused on Amazon AWS.As their business scaled, though, they started to encounter issues with this platform. Reliability of the infrastructure was spotty, performance suffered on their data analytics processes, and integration became increasingly complex. They needed a different approach – one that could decrease complexity while increasing the performance and reliability of their applications, so that they could continue to support their growth.Their need to get code out to customers more quickly continued to drive their need for fast automated provisioning. But their big investments in open source technologies were at odds with the proprietary nature of the Amazon Cloud. Their open source usage had historically been at the application layer and up, and they wanted to extend this into infrastructure as well.
OpenStack represented the first viable chance to embrace an open source cloud management/operating system that could handle their future growth and scale. This offered them all of the benefits of the large public cloud providers, as well as the control, QoS and scale they needed in a private cloud managed environment at Rackspace. It gives them direct control of aspects of the cloud they would not otherwise have access to, by enabling them to make changes in the actual cloud operating system and then contributing those changes back to the OpenStack community.They have now built a true hybrid cloud. A homegrown provisioning and management tool they built called RainMaker, which manages resources and applications automatically and seamlessly across public, private, and dedicated resources. They have built a direct connect connection the AWS to facilitate the migration of their applications to their private cloud environment over time. They run their most intensive and demanding data analytics jobs on a huge dedicated Hadoop cluster on Rackspace dedicated servers (over 150 servers), complete with dedicated 10gig switches. They are already using the OpenStack Nova Bare Metal Driver to manage these dedicated servers, via the OpenStack API (making them one of the earliest adopters of this very new OpenStack project).The results speak for themselves. According to Jim O’Neill, Hubspot’s CIO, they have achieved four times the efficiency for half the cost of doing this entirely in public cloud.
To get started from a hardware standpoint you will need a minimum of three servers: one controller and two compute nodes. That would provide you with bare-minimum sandbox/proof of concept environment.
