Introduction
■ Exploitation and management of external knowledge has critical importance for
success
■ Modern economy is highly dynamic, complex and “knowledge intensive”
■ There is increasing interest in the concept of firms’ Absorptive Capacity (ACAP)
■ ICT can be quite useful for improvement of firms’ ACAP
■ The role from the different types of Enterprise Systems has not been examined
Contribution
 We perform an empirical investigation of the effects of ERP, CRM, SCM, BI/BA and
CollaborationSupport Systems on the Absorptive Capacity of Greek firms
Motivation
■ Large amounts of money are spent in order to develop various types of ES
– ERP, CRM, SCM, BI/BA and Collaboration Support Systems
■ Our work impacts:
– Firms’ users of ES, who can take advantage their ES better
– ES vendor firms
■ The ES impact beyond efficiency, on critical knowledge management processes

Literature Review
■ ICT infrastructure, ICT assimilation positively affect firm’s ACAP, its supply chain agility
and firm’s performance
■ Integrated IS capability enhances the ACAP of the operations management
department and positively affects the business – IT alignment
■ Use of integrated ICT for the provision of market related information to employees
increase relevant ACAP
■ Mastery of technical ICT skills and use of ICT in interdependent tasks positively affect
ACAP
■ Franchisee use of ICT provided by the franchisor positively impacts the effectiveness
of knowledge transfer from the latter to the former
■ Data and the connectedness positively affect ACAP
ACAP Research Hypotheses
■ H1:The use of ERP Systems has a positive effect on firm’s ACAP
■ H3:The use of SCM Systems has a positive effect on firm’s ACAP
■ H2:The use of CRM Systems has a positive effect on firm’s ACAP
■ H4:The use of BA/BA Systems has a positive effect on firm’s ACAP
■ H5:The use of CS Systems has a positive effect on firm’s ACAP

Editor's Notes

  1. Hi, my Name is Niki Kyriakou and I am a PhD candidate at the University of the Aegean, at the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering. Today, I am going to talk about our paper that revolves around the …
  2. We will start with a brief introduction about absorptive capacity, what our paper talks about and what is our main contribution. Also, we are going to talk about our research hypotheses, how we built our models and what were eventually our results.
  3. As the modern economy has become much more complex, ‘knowledge intensive’ and dynamic than in the past, (because of the frequent and fast changes in most industries, the continuous emergence of new technologies and materials, the changes in customers’ needs and preferences, the new products, the services and processes, the new competitors, etc.), the exploitation and management of external knowledge has become critical for the success of firms; This has led to increasing interest of both researchers and practitioners in the concept of firm’s absorptive capacity (ACAP). Also, it has been recognized that information and communication technologies (ICT) can be quite useful for the improvement of firms’ ACAP. Some empirical research has been conducted in this direction, which however has not examined the role from this perspective of the most important ICT investments of firms: the different types of enterprise systems (ES) implemented by firms increasingly, which become critical infrastructures of their operation. This paper contributes to filling this research gap, by presenting an empirical investigation of the effects of the five most important and widely used types of enterprise systems (ERP, CRM, SCM, business intelligence/business analytics and collaboration support systems) on the ACAP of Greek firms. More specific it examines to what extent Greek firms are exploiting the aforementioned main types of ES not only as efficiency improvement tools, but also for enhancing these important external knowledge management capabilities of them.
  4. Now, what are our motivation! Firms spend large amounts of money in order to develop various types of ES, which become critical infrastructures of their operation, such as ERP, CRM, SCM, BI/BA and collaboration support systems It is therefore important to investigate the impact that these multiple types of ES have beyond efficiency, on critical knowledge management processes of the firm, such as the ones concerning the management of external knowledge, which determine firm’s ACAP. The findings of such research can be quite useful for firms’ users (or potential users) of ES, in order to make a better exploitation of their ES, not only towards increasing efficiency, but also towards supporting knowledge management processes; furthermore they can be quite useful for ES vendor firms, providing them guidance for improving their products and services, towards strengthening and enriching their features that enable firms to improving their ACAP.
  5. There are two different definitions around ACAP. A relatively older one refers to the recognition, acquisition and understanding of the value of external information that can be assimilated and used towards companies’ commercial ends. The newer definition segments ACAP in two different parts. Potential, which refers to a firm’s ability to acquire and assimilate external knowledge And the second one is realized, which has to do with consuming the knowledge to leverage it for development of innovations in its processes, products and services. Now, there are two mechanisms that can be used to increase ACAP. The first is by coordination between the participants in a role or group and the second through socialization among others
  6. As you can see, it is being affected by ICT infrastructure, ICT assimilation, the IS capability of a business, the use and mastery of integrated ICT a nd the transitive use of ICT between franchisors and franchisees. Also the data and connectedness can have an impact on ACAP.
  7. These are our five research hypotheses. The most important type of ES is definitely the ERP systems, you know, those systems that are used for resource planning within companies. They increasingly become the backbone of the ICT infrastructure of numerous firms of all sectors and sizes. So our first research hypothesis concerns the effect of the use of ERP systems on firm’s ACAP. Another highly important type of ES is the customer relationship management (CRM) system. The growing competition in many sectors has increased the importance of firms’ relationships with their customers, and this has led to increasing adoption of CRM systems. An important trend of the modern economy is firms’ concentration on their core competences, and at the same time reliance on other firms for their non-core activities, which supply a wide variety of goods and services; however, this necessitates high levels of co-ordination with these multiple suppliers, and with customers as well, and in general effective management of the whole supply chain. So our third research hypothesis concerns the use of SCM systems. So, these 3 important types of ES (ERP, CRM and SCM) provide some basic data analysis and reporting capabilities, and enable some extent of knowledge generation from their data, it is widely recognized that much more knowledge can be generated from them by using more advanced processing techniques, and this has given rise to the development and increasing adoption by firms of the business intelligence/business analytics (BI/BA) systems for this purpose. Finally, another type of ES increasingly used by firms are the collaboration support systems, which are defined as software packages that support the internal collaboration between employees of the firm, as well as the external collaboration with customers, suppliers and business partners, by offering capabilities of sharing various forms of content, instant messaging, discussion forum, project management, etc.
  8. To identify which of our hypotheses stand, we base our study on data collected from 122 Greek firms through a survey concerning ‘Innovation – Use of ICT and Cloud – Impact of the Economic Crisis on Greek Enterprises’ between September 2015 and May 2016. An initial sample of 500 Greek firms from the most important sectors of the Greek economy was taken from ICAP, a leading Greek business information and consulting firm. The questionnaire of this survey was sent by e-mail to the CEOs of these firms, asking them to fill and return it. So, we estimated the following regression model.. Where….. ->
  9. Where the dependent variable is ACAP, which is defined by the mean of the scores of the four items assessing dimensions of it. Then, we take its dimension and we treat it as dependent variable. Our independent variables include the use of ES (ΕRP, CRM, SCM, BI_BA and CS), and the mean of the scores for these five measures Our independent variables include the use of five ES types, ERP, CRM, SCM, BI_BA and CS, the mean scores these measures and the human capital. The human capital is measured as the share of employees with tertiary-level education and controls for firm size, and sector affiliation.
  10. After applying our models, these are our results. In the first table we can see the estimates for the model of the overall measure of ACAP. This variable correlates positively and statistically significantly with the variable ES_AV that measures the overall extent of use of the five types of ES. The results in column 2 and column 3 demonstrate that this overall effect can be primarily traced back to two types of ES, namely ERP and CRM. As you can see, or you cannot see, three of the variables we talked about earlier are missing from these tables. This is because SCM, BI_BA and CS systems have F-values more than 10%, that made them statistically insignificant. This table presents the estimates for the dimension of ACAP that refers to the firm’s ability to analyze and disseminate external new knowledge within the firm. This variable correlates positively and statistically significantly with the variable ES_AV (column 1). This overall ES effect can be traced back to three single types of ES. ERP, CRM and BI/BA, as the results shown in column 2, column 3 and column 4, respectively, show. For the other two technologies we could not estimate any statistically valid models. The final table shows the estimates for the dimension of ACAP that refers to firm’s ability to assimilate external knowledge and combine it with existing internal knowledge. In this case we can also see a positive correlation with the overall ES use variable (column 1). This effect can be traced back to two types of ES, namely ERP and CRM (column 2 and column 3, respectively). We could not find valid models for the other three technologies.
