2. Meaning of Biodiversity
The word Biodiversity originates from the GREEK word BIOS =
LIFE and LATIN word DIVERSITAS = VARIETY OR DIFFERENCE .
The whole word Biodiversity therefore means Variety of Life .
3. The term Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on the Earth
at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems, and can surround the
evolutionary, ecological, and cultural processes that sustain life.
Biodiversity includes not only species we consider rare,
threatened, or endangered but also every living thing- from
humans to organisms we know little about, such as microbes,
fungi, and invertebrates .
5. GENETIC Biodiversity
It refers to the variations among the genetic resources of the
organisms. Every individual of a particular species differs from each
other in their genetic constitution.
That is why every human looks different from each other. Similarly,
there are different varieties in the same species of rice, wheat, maize,
barley, etc.
6. SPECIES Biodiversity
Species diversity refers to the variety of different types of species
found in a particular area. It is the biodiversity at the most basic level.
It includes all the species ranging from plants to different
microorganisms.
7. ECOSYSTEM Biodiversity
An ecosystem is a collection of living and nonliving organisms and
their interaction with each other. Ecological biodiversity refers to the
variations in the plant and animal species living together and
connected by food chains and food webs.
Diversity in different ecosystems like deserts, rainforests, mangroves,
etc., include ecological diversity.
8. Hotspot of Biodiversity in India
1.The Himalayas
2.Indo-Burma region
3.The Western Ghats
4.Sundaland
9. Biodiversity and Business
Apart from fulfilling basic human needs , biodiversity holds a
significant role in business world since it is biodiversity that provide the
business with raw material , valuable foods , medicines and
commercial products.
Biodiversity is the primary supplier and source of raw material in the
form of agricultural goods , minerals , natural resources that comprises
of inputs used in the majority of industries all over the world.
10. Importance of Biodiversity in Business
1.Timber : Wood is one of the few commodities
used and traded world-wide that is harvested
from wild source .
The impact of biodiversity as a provider of raw
material can be clearly seen .
11. 2.Fishery : Fish and other products makeup
another class of commodities of great economic
importance in international trade that are
harvested mainly from biodiversity .
3.Food : Large number of species serve as crops
and fruits of major economic importance such as
wheat , rice , apples , mangoes, etc. which are
traded commercially in the country and abroad .
12. 4.Medicinal value : Biodiversity provides us with
useful drugs and medicines.
For example , plants like Neem has potential medical
application .
5.Genetic value : Biodiversity is a valuable genetic
resources. Most of the hybrid varieties of crops under
cultivation have been developed by incorporating
useful genes from different species.
13. 6. Tourism : Tourism industry is mainly based on
observation of wildlife within protected areas and is a
major source of income for many developing countries.
Tourism further enhances the business potential of
restaurants, hotels and parks which functions only
because wildlife exist and attracts tourism .
7.Fuel : Our forest have been used for ages for fuel
wood . The fossil fuels, coals , petroleum and natural
gas are also products of fossilised biodiversity .
16. Conservation of Biodiversity
There are two basic strategies for biodiversity conservation these are :
1.Insitu(Onsite) conservation
2.Exsitu(offsite) conservation
17. In situ Conservation
The term in situ conservation denotes
conservation of species in its natural habitat ,
i.e where the species is normally found.
In situ strategy stress on protection of total
ecosystem through a network of protected
areas .
18. Ex situ Conservation
This is a conservation of species out of their
habitat.
This includes genes, pollen, tissue cultures, seeds
and botanical gardens etc.
19. This is a tableau of Maharashtra showcased on Republic Day 2022 Representing
Biodiversity in the voice of Amitabh Bachchan.
20. CONCLUSION
Biodiversity is our life . If the biodiversity got lost at this rate then in
near future, the survival of human being will be threatened. So, it is
our moral duty to conserve biodiversity as well our environment.
Long term maintenance of species and their management requires
cooperative efforts across entire landscape. Biodiversity should be
dealt with at scale of habitats or ecosystems rather than at species
level.
