The Purge

The Purge begins with an established shot of a man shooting
another man and as he falls to the floor the man runs away. It
goes on to show different crimes such as fighting in groups in the
street; this is all shown as CCTV footage. On each shot in the
corner it tells us where the footage is from e.g. Syracuse,
Jacksonville and Huntsville after that It tells us the time and date
and that The Purge is based in America. You can see that the day
and month is always the same 03/21 but the date of the year
goes up from 2017 to 2021, this tells us The Purge is an event
occurring every year from 7:00 PM on March 21st till 7:00 AM on
March 22nd. . At the top of each scene it says ‘Purge Feed’ this
tells the audience this is what the purge is and showing the
different shots of what goes on in them 24 hours. Another one of
the shots is Aerial shot looking down at a gang of lads fighting at
a high angle. All clips are very fast and show a lot of establish
shots so you can see the movement of the characters and see the
victims you begin to see what the film is about and how violent
‘The Purge’ is. On some clips there are slow zooms and canted
framing to follow what is happening as the criminals rub away.
By showing a fire it shows arson to a building that is on fire and
outlines of people’s body running around with objects in their
hands witch look like bats and poles. Most of the clips you see
are from a high angle view due to the fact it’s filmed from CCTV
which means it would be on the top of a building or post because
all footage is all based outside. Even fast shots of people lay dead
in a line on the floor being shown in an aerial shot. With crime
such as arson to buildings and cars, shootings, gang crime it gives
you examples of what the film going to be about and what genre
it is.

Visual Effects &
Colour Scheme
It is continuity edited with jump cuts to each different crime;
They are all flashbacks of what has happened in the past from
2017-2021. It shows credits on each clip such as names like
Adelaide Kane, Tony Oller and Rhys Wakefield. The opening
sequence had montage editing throughout the beginning this
means there is a lot of different series of short shots edited into a
sequence showing all the flashbacks. It shows allot of
juxtaposition during this sequence of guns, fire, knife and
violence which all show us what we will see in the film and what
the film is about.

Genre Conventions
The Purge shows many genre conventions, with the genre being
horror/thriller it has all the props and editing effects that would
normally be seen in a horror or thriller such as guns, knives, fire,
gangs, fighting etc. With the opening sequence starting off with
all these violent scenes you begin to think it is a gangster, thriller
movie but as the film goes on and you begin to see what the
movie is based on its a horror as well.
Narrative
During the sequence there is no diegetic sound. With the videos
being captioned on CCTV footage most sound wouldn’t be heard
or wouldn’t have had sound with the camera. Throughout the
footage there is non diegetic sound of a slow high pitched song
from start to finish.
Editing Techniques
It is continuity edited with jump cuts to each different crime and
is based on montage editing throughout showing us different
clips of crimes that have taken place over the years.
