Editor's Notes
On February 29, 2004, Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” opened in movie theaters across America.
(click to fly in) Gross box office receipts exceeded $83 million.
(click to fly in) From its opening night through the end of July the movie brought in over $370 million.
Many more millions in revenue came in from souvenir and memorabilia sales, and foreign box office sales.
The movie exposed emotions like no other film has ever done before.
But then, Jesus is a man like none before.
The movie focused on the intense physical suffering of Jesus
It was …… without a doubt, worse than we can imagine
But what the movie missed emphasizing about Christ’s passion is why He endured what He did
We will discover that Christ’s Passion was to save the world in the grasp of Satan from eternal ruin and death
Our subject tonight is: Survivor: How to Have Eternal Life
The survivor series on CBS has caught the attention of America.
Some time ago the ninth season hit the television airwaves.
Once again, people tuned in by the millions to watch the relationships, competitions, and strategies unfold. Each contestant will be competing for a prize of one million dollars.
There seem to be two factors that affect the eventual outcome more than any others
1. The alliances formed
2. The ability to win immunity from being voted out of the game.
One interesting part of immunity is that the player who wins it for that round can
Keep it for himself
Or give it away to someone else.

Several aspects of the game of Survivor are similar to some of the realities in our lives
The alliances we form will affect our future for eternity.
We can receive immunity from someone who has won it for Himself
It is not immunity from being voted out of the game
It is immunity from receiving the results of our sins
In Survivor the losers will be voted out of the game
And the winner will be given one million dollars
But in the game of life, the losers face eternal death,
And the winners will receive eternal life
Let’s go to the Bible and discover how to be a survivor and win eternal life
In previous studies we have learned that Satan is responsible for the evil in the world
Through Adam he brought the curse of sin upon the human race
But God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son
So man could have eternal life

The King James Version says, “Sin is the transgression of the law.”
(click to fly in) Lawlessness involves either
(click to fly in) claiming there is no law, or disregarding the law that exists. Simply defined, sin is disobeying or disregarding God’s rules for living.

God did not leave us hopelessly lost because of sin. It was Jesus’ mission to find us and restore us to His family. In the parable of the lost sheep (Matthew 18:10-14), Jesus indicated that He would have come to save even one person lost in sin. (read the parable from the Bible)

It is not God’s desire that anyone, not even the worst sinner, should die. Peter said that God “is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

Jesus died in our place to pay the penalty for our sins, and to restore our relationship with God. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:5,6)

Jesus died for our sin, taking our death penalty, allowing us to “start over” with a clean record. This is called justification. Grace (salvation) is God’s free gift. We cannot earn it, but we must accept it.

In the past few years there have been numerous crimes involving young people. What is almost as shocking as the crimes themselves is the lack of remorse shown by the criminals. Receiving God’s grace begins with repentance. It is not enough to simply confess our sins; that is, to admit we did what we did. The Menendez brothers confessed to killing their parents, but they did not consider it wrong and were not sorry they did it. If we do not acknowledge our wrong acts as sin, we won’t even realize our need to have Jesus’ blood cover our sin. If we repent we will be sorry we sinned, even to the point of wishing we had not sinned in the first place. We must repent of our sins and confess them to God in order to be cleansed.

Repentance includes: [fly in each number] (1) Being sorry for sinning, (2) Confessing our sin to whomever we wronged (whether it be to a person, and/or to God only), (3) Forsaking the sin, (4) Baptism.

“Christ must be revealed to the sinner as the Savior dying for the sins of the world; and as he beholds the Lamb of God on the cross of Calvary, the mysteries of redemption begin to unfold to his mind, and the goodness of God leads him to repentance.” (Steps to Christ pg. 26).

Jesus searches for us, finds us, and invites us to have a relationship with Him. All we must do is open the door of our heart to Him, and He will come in and live His life in us. Paul said,

Tonight we are faced with a choice. We can choose the world, with its sin and death, or we can choose Jesus and eternal life. There will never be a batter time than now.
“If you see your sinfulness, do not wait to make yourself better. How many there are who think they are not good enough to come to Christ. Do you expect to become better through your own efforts? ‘Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.’ (Jeremiah 13:23) There is help for us only in God. We must not wait for stronger persuasions, for better opportunities, or for holier tempers. We can do nothing of ourselves. We must come to Christ just as we are.” (Steps to Christ pg. 31).
