2. Establish a Website or Blog and
BRANDING You!
One undeniable fact is that your customers use search
engines to do research about you, connect with you, and to
decide if they will do business with you. This is the most
compelling reason for you to purchase your full name as a
domain name for your web site (yourfullname.com). Through
the development of either a static website or a blog under
“yourfullname.com,” you own the first search engine result
(SER) for your name in Google and the many other search
engines which is the first information a potential customer will
read about you and your business.
When you contribute information to your affiliate web site
(HAR or your brokerage web site,) you might have been given
guidelines as what to write for a bio and that may be edited
by another person and not reflect exactly what you want to
impart to your clients.
3.
4. Own Your Domain
It can be very tempting to go with a free web hosting service that
takes care of all the details eliminating the need for you to own
your own domain name. It’s a route many individuals, bloggers,
and even small businesses take. However if you’re building a
brand of yourself you should start with 'yourfullname.com' or a
domain name which reflects exactly what you are achieving in
business 'yournamesellsrealestate.com' as an example.
So, understand that your domain should be a site independent of
any other brand or company names. Also, after purchasing the
rights to your domain name remember to be sure to add your
picture, a bio for yourself, your e-mail address and links to the
rest of your online presence (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter,
HAR, your brokerage web page, etc.). This expands the way
people can conveniently get in touch with you using the medium
of their choosing.
5. Own Your Domain
Let’s start from the assumption that you either have or
are planning to launch a small business. It doesn’t
matter what kind of business. The Internet is a way for
you to reach customers, and you want to project
professionalism. Even if you’re aiming for a “down-
home” friendly feeling to your business, you want your
potential customers to trust you’ll handle their orders
promptly and properly, fix any problems, and – above
all –you’re not going to pack up and vanish overnight.
If you’re using a free web host, your site will probably
have a domain name like
http://www.freewebhost.com/yourname. How
professional is that?
6. Own Your Domain
A domain name such as http://www.yourname.com
gives a greater sense of permanence and
professionalism. It gives you a brand that you can
build on. With the other URL, people can tell at a
glance that you’re using a free web host, and what
kind of message does that convey? It says that you’re
not willing to invest money in your own business (and
with how little it costs to register a domain name, there
really is no excuse for that). Would you buy from
someone like that? If not, why would you expect
prospective customers to buy from you?
7. Own Your Domain
Also, if you’re using a free web host, as you would
have to if you don’t have your own domain name, you
can expect that host to place ads for its service on
your site. It doesn’t matter what kind of site you have.
To make matters worse, the free web host might even
place AdSense or other search-related ads on your
site. Think about it. If you don’t own your own domain
name, your free web host could even place ads for
your competitors on your site – and make money from
them! If that doesn’t seem likely, remember that
AdSense and similar services display ads related to
the content on the web page, so it’s entirely possible
ads promoting your rivals could show up on your site.

Editor's Notes
If you’re planning to optimize your web site so it shows up in a good position on the search engine results pages (SERPs), you definitely want to have your own domain name. If you’re planning to use SEO on your web site, then you know about keywords and how they relate to the way the search engines index your site. Well, the keywords in your domain name matter, too.
Let’s go back a moment to compare potential URLs. Earlier I said if you set up a web site with a free web hosting company and didn’t have your own domain, your site’s URL would be something like http://www.freewebsite.com/yourname. If you own your own domain, your site’s URL would be more like http://www.yourname.com. Aside from looking more professional, it’s much easier to rank higher for the right keywords for the second URL. It is important to note SEO is a business of its own within the Internet world and there are a multitude of companies which charge large sums of money to boost a sites rankings on SERPs, they make many promises for results within a certain time period (three to six months as a general rule of thumb,) and as you will learn later in this session, you have the capabilities and potential to accomplish this without having to pay a company for, in essence, empty promises. Just to add a little confusion to the topic, search engines are constantly updating the algorithms used for searching sites to stay ahead of spamming sites and therefore the rules change as to how to get rankings on SERPs. But when a person does a search for you and you have your name in the domain, you are almost guaranteed to be in the first ten sites on the SERP. You see, with the first URL, your index.html page may be the home page of your site – but it isn’t the home page of that domain. Google, Yahoo, and the other search engines will be looking at the whole domain; your site is just a sub-domain to them. Since search engines tend to pay more attention to home pages than to other parts of a web site, you can pretty much guess where that leaves you on page fifteen instead of page one.
If you own your own domain name, however, at least you have a fighting chance. It’s hard enough already to work your way to a high rank on the SERPs, especially for some of the more competitive and sought-after keywords. Why make your job harder by setting yourself up to struggle against the SEO handicap of being a sub-domain on a free web host’s site? Another SEO issue worth mentioning is permanent 301 redirects. Let’s say you decide to change the branding on your web site, and move it to a different URL. If you own both URLs, it’s much easier to tell the search engines that your web site has permanently moved to this new address. Let me reiterate Search Engine Optimization is a business all of its own and by using a program designed for SEO you will save yourself the hassle of having to learn all the rules and methods of optimization, or paying someone to do it for you.
The next set of slides will guide you through the process of purchasing your domain name.
Start by entering the domain name you would like to purchase to begin the search, it will open a new web page.
You would use the drop down box to determine the TLD (Top Level Domain) to go with your domain name. Every domain name has a suffix to indicate which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number (at present 250 TLDs,) of such domains. For example: gov - Government agencies edu - Educational institutions org - Organizations (nonprofit) mil - Military com - commercial business net - Network organizations ca - Canada Imagine the TLD is the slab of your house and the domain is the main floor where people enter and visit. So yourname.com is actually known as a second level domain.
Click the Add button to place this domain in your shopping cart.
Here we are buying the domain for two years.
Adding Privacy rather defeats the purpose of branding yourself, so leave these settings as they appear and click the Next button.
In order to communicate with potential customers, it is advisable to add an email package to your shopping cart. After you click the ‘Continue to Checkout’ …
The next step is adding your information to create the account with MyKeySite.com. The password requirements are showing to help with creating a password for the account login. The password is not for your domain or email, it is only to log into your main account at MyKeySite.com. Setting up passwords for domain and email will happen a little later.
A four digit pin is needed at this point. Should you require telephone support, it is used to help identify you with the support group.
Step 3 is paying the shopping cart for your items. Until you check box the ‘I have read and agree to the terms and conditions of the:’ the purchase will not proceed. As you can see the cart will automatically give a discount on your purchase!
Your purchase is complete and you will now see (in the next set of slides,) a quick overview of the control panel for your account.
This is the control panel for Linda’s account. By clicking the plus sign on the left side, you will see a synopsis of what is available within that part of the control panel.
The domain information…
The website tonight section is the freebie part and can be ignored.
The calendar section is the freebie part and can be ignored.
The online storage section is the freebie part and can be ignored.
Your email address has to be created before setting up the hosting. Click the ‘Launch’ button to start this process Your email address should not depend upon companies that handle your Internet connection such as Comcasts, AOL's and AT&T’s and other Internet service providers. Usually, when you have an Internet connection, you also have an email account with the company providing the connection, such as yourname@att.net. That’s fine – but what happens if and when you change ISPs? You may feel like you are stuck with a particular ISP due to the cost associated with changing your email address on all printed material such as business cards, brochures, and marketing material. Whether it’s because the ISP goes out of business, or you move into an area where the company doesn’t provide service, or if another ISP offers better rates if your email address changes you will have to notify all of your contacts of your new email address.
And this webpage will open. Click the yellow Add button (it is under the black area under the right side of the page.
Another option available is to have your email client (i.e. Outlook) log onto your mail server and collect the incoming mails. So the password you create here will be the password you use to tell Outlook or other application to collect your mail.
On the ‘Related Products’ tab is where the Calendar and Online storage are associated to the email address. Providers of website related services must constantly strive to add new features at lower costs to the consumer due to the highly competitive nature of the industry. These items are ‘free’ for the first year and each year after they are initiated, you will be charged for the use of the products. My recommendation is to ignore these products.
If you have your own domain name, you can set up an email address with it – say yourname@yourawesomesite.com. And you can set it up in such a way that it forwards the messages you receive to whatever email address you’re currently using, whether it’s with Gmail, Hotmail, Comcast or some small local ISP that gives you an incredible deal because your brother-in-law owns the company. Then the only email address you hand out is the one associated with your domain name. If you change the address at which you’re receiving email, all you have to do is change the redirect that you have set up in your domain control panel.
This how your control panel will look after you’ve added new emails to your domain. If you have a web site and an online business, another nice thing about having your own domain name is that you can set up more email addresses than most free web hosts would permit you to have. When web surfers see they can contact sales@youronlinestore.com, support@youronlinestore.com, feedback@youronlinestore.com, and others, they figure they are dealing with an established company. From your point of view, this helps you organize and filter your email.
You may use a web browser to view your new email account by going to http://email.your--domain-name.com
Thousands of programmers (including us) are contributing to the open source project free of charge building useful WordPress Plugins and Themes. WordPress can be used as a CMS (content management system) so REALTORS® can easily update their websites at will. No longer are they held hostage by Webmasters to update content using proprietary software at unreasonable rates. WordPress does NOT require extensive knowledge of HTML, XHTML, CSS or depend on FTP programs for uploading images and fresh content once the real estate website is setup. WordPress version updates are free and easy to install.
From your control panel, click the plus sign on the Web Hosting section. Next click the ‘Launch’ button and the next and first step is to set up your FTP information.
Your ftp server is your personal cloud on the Internet. You can access your storage space by typing ftp://ftp.your-doamin-name.com into Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer!) Now you will have the ability to drag and drop from your desktop to your private cloud storage. (Biggie smile inserted here!)
Here is the beginning of setting up WordPress on your domain. You start by clicking the Wordpress icon located in Options & Settings.
By clicking ‘Finish’ the setup will be initiated and a short few minutes later you will have access to your web site powered by Wordpress. Remember your login address as http://your-domain-name.com/wp-admin
