The battery originated from the union of percussion instruments from around the world in 1890, including drums and timbales from Africa and China, cymbals from Turkey and China, and the snare from Europe. A modern battery consists of a bass drum, toms of different sizes, a hi-hat, ride cymbal, crash cymbals, splash cymbal, and china cymbal. It is played with sticks and foot pedals. A famous piece where the battery plays a prominent role is "We Will Rock You" by Queen.
