2. What is the science and technology
behind it?
• Nuclear fusion is sort of like the energy source of the future.
• Fusion powers the sun and stars as hydrogen atoms fuse together
to form helium and matter is converted into energy.
• Hydrogen heated to very high temperatures changes from a gas to
plasma in which the negatively charged electrons are separated
from the positively charged atomic nucleons.
• Nuclear fusion is very commonly used in nuclear weapons
• Nuclear fusion is a very dangerous thing and it is hard to control
• Fusion power offers the prospect of an almost inexhaustible source
of energy for future generations but it also presents so far
insurmountable scientific and engineering challenges
• The main hope is centred on tokamak reactors which confine a
deuterium-plasma magnetically
3. How is it being used?
• The worldwide collaboration on the
development of nuclear fusion as a safe, clean
energy source is now culminating in the
construction of the large test reactor ITER.
• ITER. Is being built in Europe (in
Cadarache, France) and will demonstrate 10-
fold power multiplication at the 500 MW level
4. What are the benefits and problems
associated with this energy resources?
• The potential advantages of nuclear fusion energy include:
• An enormous supply of inexpensive fuel (deuterium and
tritium).
• A long term, sustainable, economic and safe energy source
for electricity generation.
• Minimal long lived radioactive products.
• Possible recycling of some reactor materials and unburned
fuel.
• No greenhouse gas effect.
• One of the few problems is that its very dangerous and
difficult to controll
5. What does your community think
about this resource?
• Well most people think that its all good and
that its great that we are coming up with new
alternate fuel sources
• Whilst the other half thing that it’s a very
dangerous idea and that it could kill us all if a
small mistake happens.
• The rest however don’t really care either way
6. What is the likely future of the
resource?
• The likely future for nuclear fusion energy is
still far from being safe enough to use.
• In years time though, it will hopefully be safe
to use and controllable
• And with much luck, it will be most useful in
the future as well
