Homework Essay
Definition of homework: Tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be
carried out during non–school hours. Why do we have homework? What are the benefits of
homework? Is there such thing as too much homework? Homework helps you to gain, and retain
more knowledge than would be possible with only classroom work, this is a huge reason students get
homework. Homework does actually have benefits, it teaches a host of important life skills, from
responsibility and time management in prioritizing and organizing. But, how much is too much
homework? That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular
intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. If you do have a lot...show

That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or
capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. I'm afraid some people after a certain
amount of time doing homework, they begin to shut down. However, there have been studies that
show how outside of school learning improves in–class learning, and I agree with that. Without
homework, I'd forget part of what we learned the previous day the minute my head hit the pillow.
But, if you must skip a simple 90 minutes of soccer practice because homework is taking two hours
longer than you thought, there's a problem. If you do have a lot of homework at a time, it helps to
be organized. Prioritizing can help you to complete your homework assignments with minimal stress.
"A poll conducted for the Associated Press earlier this year found that about 57 percent of parents
felt their child was assigned about the right amount of homework. Another 23 percent thought it was
too little, 19 percent thought it was too much." K–2 works on homework for about 10–20 minutes a
night. 3–6 graders have about 30–60 minutes a night usually. When you get into junior high you'll
have about 90 minutes. Students who are in college have around 90–150 minutes a night! Do you
now understand why we students have homework? What are the benefits of homework? And if there

Thesis Statement Against Homework
The Case Against Homework:
Homework/it is "All pain and no gain"
There is very very little, if any, correlation between homework and test scores
Not a single study has ever supported the folk wisdom that homework teaches good study habits and
self–discipline.
Most of homework is assigned as busywork to keep kids busy, assuming that they will waste their
time.
A lot of teachers feel pressured to assign homework by tradition, administrators, and/or parents.
Most of the folk wisdom that homework is good and helps your academic achievement, test scores,
responsibility, study habits, and to connect with your family has either been proven wrong, the
opposite, or has not been proven at all.
Homework only allows kids to grow academically, because it takes up so much time to do, they don't
have time to do anything other than...show more content...
Students tend to imitate what the teacher is saying and doing, instead of figuring it out for
themselves (for the most/some part :) ) and understanding why the steps Work.

The Importance Of Homework
School, Sports, Shower, Eat, Homework, Repeat. Teens face the struggles of not having any time
to finish their homework much less having any time to do their favorite activities. Despite all of
these issues when the going get's tough you should try taking your mind off of it, talk to
someone you trust, or work harder with even more focus toward your goal. I know when I'm
stressed or upset about something my mom will always tell me to step away from the situation
for a little bit and do something I like to do so I can calm down and then revisit my homework or
the situation after. In Boy 21 after Finley talked about what happened to his mom and grandpa,
Russ asked "So that's when you stopped talking?" and Finley said "Yeah. It's also when I started
playing basketball" (Quick 232). When Finley went through that rough time in his life with his
mom passing away and grandpa getting his legs cut off, basketball became his passion and what
he loved to do. Anytime he was playing he would feel like nothing else mattered in the world. In
this Finley teaches us that a passion in itself could be a cure to dealing with life's issues. Some
people are too proud to ask for help and they are the ones who really need it the most. Those who
don't get help fall deeper and deeper into a hole and end up going insane because they have
everything bottled up. In Boy 21 Russ says, "Let's talk about what happened to our parents. I really
think it might help. I talk to my therapist all the time. You

A high schooler comes home from school. He gets out his homework and gets started. The mom of
the student said start your homework and then we will eat.The mom spends an hour at dinner, but
the student is not done with his homework. He is asking his dad all types of questions, but he is
too busy to help. That happens every day at this family home. When the boy got his test scores back
later in the year, they were so low. Students have busy lifestyles and stress at home. They need time
away from studies to appreciate what they learn. There are so many things that can help them prepare
for life outside of school and giving a lot of homework causes stress to the student and family. I
wanted to find a way to get schools to cut down on homework. Too many kids are doing badly on
a test because of the time constraints and stress to complete homework. So let's do something
about it. When I was researching, I asked myself "How can I get schools to cut down on
homework?"After all the research that I did, it was clear to me that we can help the kids in school
to have less homework.
Statistics about too much homework are illuminating: too much homework can lead to being
counterproductive. After a school day, kids come home and do their homework that can cause stress
to a family that has other needs or issues, such as low income. Too much homework can have a
negative effect because they might be from a home that doesn't have everything they need. They
might not have parents or older siblings

The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay
Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning
homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do
as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers
should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and
less homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less
homework is that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a
day, and then goes home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that
student adopt an eight–eight–eight schedule. This schedule being eight...show more content...
Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn).
The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to
cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in
test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in
elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn).
Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover).
There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too
much homework making standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work
(Wolchover). Many teachers ask their student to re–write pages in a textbook. This just causes the
student to spend time on something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect
on students. It just takes up more time ("Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and
Lower Grades, Studies Suggest"). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited.
Studies show that a student's time is more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent's
want their student to be good at many things. It is more important to be a well–rounded person than
to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One of the top

Essay On Homework
Homework is something that has been required for generations. Homework, like anything has many
ups and downs, many positives and negatives, many highs and lows, whatever you want to call
them. Homework ranges from kindergarten to college, and quite possibly your future job.
Homework is something that is unavoidable, it will always be there, no matter how much you try to
avoid it. Homework can be described as useless busy work that is assigned to students, but doesn't
necessarily benefit them at all.
Homework is something that causes students to miss multiple hours of sleep due to working on
homework. It can be described as stressful, difficult, but one of the better words can describe
homework as useless. Have you ever worked on a homework assignment and thought : "Why am I
doing this?" Or have you ever been up hours past your curfew because you're working on
homework? All teachers and bosses have different approaches when it comes to assigning
homework. Some deadlines are more flexible, some assignments are longer, and some are an option
for students to do. The big question still remains : "Does homework benefit students?"
If you're thinking that homework does benefit students, let's take a close look at how much
homework can actually benefit students. If a student has 7 class periods a day, and 6 of those class
periods include homework. That student is having to worry about 6 tasks, generally spending a
minimum of 3 to 4 hours working on homework. If that task is long,

The Harmful Effects Of Homework
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently
however, the US has developed an obsession with it as we keep falling behind leading countries
like Japan in the education rankings. Many kids in high school, and even some middle school aged
kids as well, can have simply unreasonable amounts of homework each night. In the past couple
years, it has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of
homework that students get each night. They are starting to realize the harmful effect that
homework has on their kids, and are becoming concerned as a result. In response to the growing
amount of criticism, more and more research has been done to try to prove the value of homework,
but even the most favorable results for homework have mixed results. Multiple studies that show a
positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework
is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Students with too much homework can
perform worse on tests, and even develop serious physical and mental health problems from too
much stress or lack of sleep. Proponents of homework claim that homework...show more content...
While homework is supposed to be independent practice, with no parent help, sometimes a student
is forced to ask for help. Teachers won't accept the excuse of "I didn't know how to do it", so why
should students be prohibited from asking for help from their parents? However, only some students,
if they don't understand a concept, can ask their parents and can get an explanation. Others don't
have that luxury, and as such, are forced to try and figure it out themselves, which isn't easy nor fair.
If students don't understand something, it isn't fair to ask them to figure it out on their own, that's

Persuasive Speech On Homework
Being a kid is not easy, trying to juggle sports, school, and a social life is stressful and time
consuming. We have lives outside of the classroom and keeping track of our work is very
difficult, but there are ways to help keep the two balanced. Here are some helpful ways to keep
your school life managed and still have a productive lifestyle. I've been in school for a little while
now and one of the things I dreaded the most was the teacher saying "Your homework for tonight
is..."Hearing those words just ruined my mood. However, homework may not be the most
enjoyable thing in the world it is important. It's 10% of your grade but also allows to practice
more on what you're learning. Once you get home, homework should be the first thing on your
mind so you can just get it out of the way. When working on homework you should definitely turn
off all electronic devices so it won't get in the way of you focusing. Another thing that could be
distracting is family. As much fun as family might be, having someone there when you're trying
to do classwork could get you really off topic. I have a cousin who I definitely adore and we are
super close but once we get to talking there is just no stopping us. Keeping a distance from them
will keep you on task and you will also get your work done faster. Once that is out of the way you
can have all the time to socialize. Ever been so stressed out about a test before? Well guess what,
you're not alone. Test and exams are so stressful and sometimes they could either make or break
your grade. Having that kind of pressure put on you doesn't feel good but there are ways you can
prep and not be so freaked out. A key thing that goes along with studying is the same with
homework, turn off all devices that have nothing to do with school. For instances phones, with all
this new social media coming out all you want do is snapchat friends and see what they are doing.
That'll distract you from studying. Besides devices being shut down, having something calm and
relaxing playing can help the brain focus more and do better. Playing classical music or maybe
sounds of nature will be soothing. I know when I study it could feel like I've been studying forever
and nothing is

Essay about The Harmful Effects of Homework
The Harmful Effects of Homework High school students feel more stress than working adults, and
children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of
health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for
all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep
less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative
results can be improved by reducing the homework load. Students continue to work late into the
night to meet the pressing homework deadlines, sacrificing much needed sleep. According to the
National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5 to 9.25 hours...show more content...
However there was a positive correlation with success and sleep (Suskind). Homework can get in
the way of activities that lead to better success. If the homework load is lessened, kids can have
more time to sleep, which is very important to a child's and teenager's development. Many health
issues occur when students do not get enough sleep. The Medical Division of Sleep Medicine at
Harvard Medical School published a research article that states a lack of sleep aids in the
development of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.(Sleep and Disease Risk)The
article shows that students need sleep, and with the balancing of school, activities, and home it cuts
into time for sleep. With the sleep deprivation and a large workload students are very prone to health
issues and stress. Homework is a large contributing factor to a student's stress.Researchers surveyed
students in 10 high–performing schools in California, and found that 56% of the students stated that
homework was a primary stressor (Strauss). Reducing the amount of homework would be more
beneficial to students than not. As students go throughout the school day the homework they get
from each class piles up. Many students believe that homework is pointless since some teachers
never look it over, and give a small amount of points for all of their work. Now this is not to say that
homework should be worth more points. Rather, the amount of homework should be equal to the

What Does Homework Mean To You Essay
People often say there aren't enough hours in the day, or there is not enough time to help out, or do
homework, or do anything new that they want to do with someone that they want to do it with.
School gives you a ton of homework, especially in college with both reading material and
assignments. For someone like me, who struggles with reading, there just seems to be no point
because I have a hard time comprehending what I read. It takes so long. I find time to work on my
assignments little by little. It is hard for me to balance school, homework and working. I am
fortunate that in my job I have a lot of down time which enables my being able to work on my
homework while at work. My bosses are very understanding and encourage me to do well with

What the public is concerned about is if homework should even be assigned? Homework was
contrived to prepare students and help them engage them in the content being taught. Homework
also enacts time management skills and responsibility of growing young adults. Although the debate
about if homework should be given minimally or in discretion and that homework has no verified
benefits still stands. Homework is necessary for causing students to be engaged in the content taught
and delivers time management skills for the future.
The stance that homework is necessary and helps students engage in the content and learn time
management skills is one I concede with assiduously. Homework is given to students to help them
retain the information they learned in class and leads to academic achievement. Many research
studies have found evidence of a positive correlation between homework and student achievement.
Since students are given homework nightly, it will help them absorb the content and they can score
higher on a test or quiz. Homework also helps students develop responsibility and life skills, and
prepares students in time management skills. Research claims the ability to manage tasks provides
essential learning, increased motivation, and academic benefits. When students engage in homework
it makes them more successful and independent in the long run. Although homework may take up
time after an extracurricular and can lead to less sleep; for example, a student doing a sport after
school, getting home and having to do homework on top of that. Doing an extracurricular and still
completing homework are inherently important, students will gain time management skills if they
are doing both. If a student can learn to juggle an extracurricular with homework it will help them
learn life skills. Homework will lead to the academic growth, achievement, and the success of a
student.
The stance that homework is important, but discretion can and should be used when assigning it is
one I partially concede with. Homework should be given in the accounts of different classes, since
not all classes are the same. Homework is given in regards to class type (CP, Honors,
Advanced–Placement), homework severs different classes by rigor

Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students
Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in
High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully
master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what
they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not
mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps
them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether
assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master
material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content...
In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even
writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of
the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework
assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the
homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning
abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets
filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not
challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of
homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred
or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the
time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning
packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief
summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know.
Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since
they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read

Argumentative Essay Homework
Many students in school struggle to complete piles of homework assigned to them each night.
Some wonder if homework is really critical to learning, and many wish homework wouldn't exist
at all. These people argue that homework is overwhelming and it takes away most of their free
time at home and is just "busy work". While some people may feel this way, I personally believe
that homework is a key point of learning because it teaches time management and helps solidify what
was learned during the day.
Homework was first introduced to American schools around 1940, During this time, many students
were not as invested in getting good grades. This was because there were other things that interested
students; like farming or serving in the military. At that time, there were many valued occupations
that didn't require rigorous education, and with WWII going on many had their minds elsewhere.
Colleges were much easier to get into because there was less competition for spots. Because of that,
working hard at school wasn't as necessary as it is now since good grades didn't pave the road to
success like it does today. Since students didn't try as hard and weren't as focused, of much the
information they learned during the day was quickly forgotten. Teachers, who realized this, decided
to develop a strategy to force students to recall what they learned throughout the day; They decided
to force students to do take home work to retain information better. Over the years children started

Homework Giving homework is controversial in the world today. Many people think it is
unnecessary to give homework, while other people think it is necessary. A lot of it also depends on
the students that are getting the homework. Homework has many effects on students in all places
and all grade levels, some good and some bad.
Pressure and Stress From Homework Giving too much homework puts lots of pressure on students,
causing stress. Homework should not pressure and stress out students as much as it does. First,
homework puts a lot of pressure on students, not just high school students, but elementary and
middle school students ("Is Homework a Good Idea" 5). Most of them are either afraid that their
teacher or parents will be angry with them, they won't get into a class they want, or they won't get
into the college they want if they don't get a good grade. While trying to get a good grade, students
feel pressure being put on them by their family, teachers, and even colleges to get the good grades.
From all this pressure students get stressed and giving them extra homework does not help (Wilde
2). Not only do they have the homework to worry about now, but they have their extracurricular and
family activities to worry about. Homework doesn't just put pressure on students, it also interrupts
their after school activities.
Homework interrupting other activities
Many students have after school activities, or want spend time with their families. None of this is

Should Homework In School Systems Be Stopped?
Homework in School Systems Students, parents, teachers, administrators and other interested parties
all seem to have strong and different feelings towards homework. Students complain that they have
too much homework to complete outside of the hours they already attended classes. Students feel
that they have personal lives to live and blow off homework while some parents and teachers
believe that homework is the key to passing classes and preparation for college. This leads to
teachers feeling pressured to push their students to succeed and this can easily get carried away.
Parents and school systems still often discuss the topic of homework today. Should homework in
school systems be stopped? The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that
homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become
more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the
work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against
homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done
by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are
assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose
interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative
outcomes, homework also has it's perks.

Homework: Beneficial or Not?
What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to
learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and
why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in
America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the
Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of
school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed
in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is
helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and
room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time
management.
Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the
realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors!
Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may
not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is
why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and
understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students.

Schools should not give any homework to kids in elementary school. First, homework makes kids
not get enough sleep and energy that they need for the next day. Especially because they probably
have more school work the next day for them to do. Next, kids don't get enough family time after
school or even on weekends which is not good because kids need family time once in awhile
because it normally keeps kids going when they can have fun with their families. Also, homework
can cause mental issues which can be bad for their health. Like depression or even just give kids
bad thoughts of doing bad things. Additionally, a lot of other people also agree with me about the
no homework policy because of these reasons.
One reason we shouldn't have homework is because kids don't get enough sleep for the next day.
"We really want the kids to go home at 4 o'clock, tired. We want their brain to be tired," Kelly
Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen Said in an interview with a local TV station." Said

get tired faster and then don't even get enough sleep for the next day. Like the principal said they
think that making kids tired is learning, but it doesn't really mean we're learning more, it is just
wearing us out and making us not want to work any longer."Brandy Young told parents, she would

Homework As A Good Thing Essay
Roth, Grace
AP Lang Period 6
October 19, 2016
Abstract
Homework has been considered apart of every child's learning experience in America, but there are
many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in,
besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this,
homework can be very unhealthy is child's life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also
evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive.
Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and
not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that
shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives.

The Importance of Homework Essay
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden
to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but
teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in
school.
Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class
activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There
are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments, they are
assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these
assignments is writing definitions down for new words...show more content...
Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies
examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC).
Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in
school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools
that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally
found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource).
Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance.
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just
a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20
minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades
time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these
recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students
are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework
compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers
don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more

Essay Homework

  • 1. Homework Essay Definition of homework: Tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried out during non–school hours. Why do we have homework? What are the benefits of homework? Is there such thing as too much homework? Homework helps you to gain, and retain more knowledge than would be possible with only classroom work, this is a huge reason students get homework. Homework does actually have benefits, it teaches a host of important life skills, from responsibility and time management in prioritizing and organizing. But, how much is too much homework? That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. If you do have a lot...show more content... That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. I'm afraid some people after a certain amount of time doing homework, they begin to shut down. However, there have been studies that show how outside of school learning improves in–class learning, and I agree with that. Without homework, I'd forget part of what we learned the previous day the minute my head hit the pillow. But, if you must skip a simple 90 minutes of soccer practice because homework is taking two hours longer than you thought, there's a problem. If you do have a lot of homework at a time, it helps to be organized. Prioritizing can help you to complete your homework assignments with minimal stress. "A poll conducted for the Associated Press earlier this year found that about 57 percent of parents felt their child was assigned about the right amount of homework. Another 23 percent thought it was too little, 19 percent thought it was too much." K–2 works on homework for about 10–20 minutes a night. 3–6 graders have about 30–60 minutes a night usually. When you get into junior high you'll have about 90 minutes. Students who are in college have around 90–150 minutes a night! Do you now understand why we students have homework? What are the benefits of homework? And if there Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Thesis Statement Against Homework The Case Against Homework: Homework/it is "All pain and no gain" There is very very little, if any, correlation between homework and test scores Not a single study has ever supported the folk wisdom that homework teaches good study habits and self–discipline. Most of homework is assigned as busywork to keep kids busy, assuming that they will waste their time. A lot of teachers feel pressured to assign homework by tradition, administrators, and/or parents. Most of the folk wisdom that homework is good and helps your academic achievement, test scores, responsibility, study habits, and to connect with your family has either been proven wrong, the opposite, or has not been proven at all. Homework only allows kids to grow academically, because it takes up so much time to do, they don't have time to do anything other than...show more content... • 4. The Importance Of Homework School, Sports, Shower, Eat, Homework, Repeat. Teens face the struggles of not having any time to finish their homework much less having any time to do their favorite activities. Despite all of these issues when the going get's tough you should try taking your mind off of it, talk to someone you trust, or work harder with even more focus toward your goal. I know when I'm stressed or upset about something my mom will always tell me to step away from the situation for a little bit and do something I like to do so I can calm down and then revisit my homework or the situation after. In Boy 21 after Finley talked about what happened to his mom and grandpa, Russ asked "So that's when you stopped talking?" and Finley said "Yeah. It's also when I started playing basketball" (Quick 232). When Finley went through that rough time in his life with his mom passing away and grandpa getting his legs cut off, basketball became his passion and what he loved to do. Anytime he was playing he would feel like nothing else mattered in the world. In this Finley teaches us that a passion in itself could be a cure to dealing with life's issues. Some people are too proud to ask for help and they are the ones who really need it the most. Those who don't get help fall deeper and deeper into a hole and end up going insane because they have everything bottled up. In Boy 21 Russ says, "Let's talk about what happened to our parents. I really think it might help. I talk to my therapist all the time. You Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay On Homework A high schooler comes home from school. He gets out his homework and gets started. The mom of the student said start your homework and then we will eat.The mom spends an hour at dinner, but the student is not done with his homework. He is asking his dad all types of questions, but he is too busy to help. That happens every day at this family home. When the boy got his test scores back later in the year, they were so low. Students have busy lifestyles and stress at home. They need time away from studies to appreciate what they learn. There are so many things that can help them prepare for life outside of school and giving a lot of homework causes stress to the student and family. I wanted to find a way to get schools to cut down on homework. Too many kids are doing badly on a test because of the time constraints and stress to complete homework. So let's do something about it. When I was researching, I asked myself "How can I get schools to cut down on homework?"After all the research that I did, it was clear to me that we can help the kids in school to have less homework. Statistics about too much homework are illuminating: too much homework can lead to being counterproductive. After a school day, kids come home and do their homework that can cause stress to a family that has other needs or issues, such as low income. Too much homework can have a negative effect because they might be from a home that doesn't have everything they need. They might not have parents or older siblings Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The Pros and Cons of Homework Essay Homework: Does it Help, or Harm Us? When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores. The first reason teachers should give students less homework is that it takes away their childhood. When a student goes to school for seven hours a day, and then goes home to three hours of homework, they do not get to be a kid. It is suggested that student adopt an eight–eight–eight schedule. This schedule being eight...show more content... Assigning less homework in schools could reduce teen anxiety and teen depression rates (Kohn). The next reason too much homework is harmful to students is that studies show more homework to cause lower test scores. One to two hours of homework a week does not cause a major change in test scores (Wolchover). There is no evidence of homework having any academic benefit in elementary or middle school, and the academic benefit found in high school is very weak (Kohn). Homework is not shown to help students academically until grades ten through twelve (Wolchover). There is also no proof that homework increases good study habits in students (Kohn). On top of too much homework making standardized test scores lower, much of this homework is just busy work (Wolchover). Many teachers ask their student to re–write pages in a textbook. This just causes the student to spend time on something that has no real purpose. Remedial work has no positive effect on students. It just takes up more time ("Too Much Homework Can Cause Stress, Depression and Lower Grades, Studies Suggest"). Even homework that is useful in some way should be limited. Studies show that a student's time is more useful when they play an instrument or a sport. Parent's want their student to be good at many things. It is more important to be a well–rounded person than to ace all of your tests (Wolchover). One of the top Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay On Homework Homework is something that has been required for generations. Homework, like anything has many ups and downs, many positives and negatives, many highs and lows, whatever you want to call them. Homework ranges from kindergarten to college, and quite possibly your future job. Homework is something that is unavoidable, it will always be there, no matter how much you try to avoid it. Homework can be described as useless busy work that is assigned to students, but doesn't necessarily benefit them at all. Homework is something that causes students to miss multiple hours of sleep due to working on homework. It can be described as stressful, difficult, but one of the better words can describe homework as useless. Have you ever worked on a homework assignment and thought : "Why am I doing this?" Or have you ever been up hours past your curfew because you're working on homework? All teachers and bosses have different approaches when it comes to assigning homework. Some deadlines are more flexible, some assignments are longer, and some are an option for students to do. The big question still remains : "Does homework benefit students?" If you're thinking that homework does benefit students, let's take a close look at how much homework can actually benefit students. If a student has 7 class periods a day, and 6 of those class periods include homework. That student is having to worry about 6 tasks, generally spending a minimum of 3 to 4 hours working on homework. If that task is long, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. The Harmful Effects Of Homework Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, the US has developed an obsession with it as we keep falling behind leading countries like Japan in the education rankings. Many kids in high school, and even some middle school aged kids as well, can have simply unreasonable amounts of homework each night. In the past couple years, it has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night. They are starting to realize the harmful effect that homework has on their kids, and are becoming concerned as a result. In response to the growing amount of criticism, more and more research has been done to try to prove the value of homework, but even the most favorable results for homework have mixed results. Multiple studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and even develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep. Proponents of homework claim that homework...show more content... While homework is supposed to be independent practice, with no parent help, sometimes a student is forced to ask for help. Teachers won't accept the excuse of "I didn't know how to do it", so why should students be prohibited from asking for help from their parents? However, only some students, if they don't understand a concept, can ask their parents and can get an explanation. Others don't have that luxury, and as such, are forced to try and figure it out themselves, which isn't easy nor fair. If students don't understand something, it isn't fair to ask them to figure it out on their own, that's why schools Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Persuasive Speech On Homework Being a kid is not easy, trying to juggle sports, school, and a social life is stressful and time consuming. We have lives outside of the classroom and keeping track of our work is very difficult, but there are ways to help keep the two balanced. Here are some helpful ways to keep your school life managed and still have a productive lifestyle. I've been in school for a little while now and one of the things I dreaded the most was the teacher saying "Your homework for tonight is..."Hearing those words just ruined my mood. However, homework may not be the most enjoyable thing in the world it is important. It's 10% of your grade but also allows to practice more on what you're learning. Once you get home, homework should be the first thing on your mind so you can just get it out of the way. When working on homework you should definitely turn off all electronic devices so it won't get in the way of you focusing. Another thing that could be distracting is family. As much fun as family might be, having someone there when you're trying to do classwork could get you really off topic. I have a cousin who I definitely adore and we are super close but once we get to talking there is just no stopping us. Keeping a distance from them will keep you on task and you will also get your work done faster. Once that is out of the way you can have all the time to socialize. Ever been so stressed out about a test before? Well guess what, you're not alone. Test and exams are so stressful and sometimes they could either make or break your grade. Having that kind of pressure put on you doesn't feel good but there are ways you can prep and not be so freaked out. A key thing that goes along with studying is the same with homework, turn off all devices that have nothing to do with school. For instances phones, with all this new social media coming out all you want do is snapchat friends and see what they are doing. That'll distract you from studying. Besides devices being shut down, having something calm and relaxing playing can help the brain focus more and do better. Playing classical music or maybe sounds of nature will be soothing. I know when I study it could feel like I've been studying forever and nothing is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Essay about The Harmful Effects of Homework The Harmful Effects of Homework High school students feel more stress than working adults, and children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative results can be improved by reducing the homework load. Students continue to work late into the night to meet the pressing homework deadlines, sacrificing much needed sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens need 8.5 to 9.25 hours...show more content... However there was a positive correlation with success and sleep (Suskind). Homework can get in the way of activities that lead to better success. If the homework load is lessened, kids can have more time to sleep, which is very important to a child's and teenager's development. Many health issues occur when students do not get enough sleep. The Medical Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School published a research article that states a lack of sleep aids in the development of diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.(Sleep and Disease Risk)The article shows that students need sleep, and with the balancing of school, activities, and home it cuts into time for sleep. With the sleep deprivation and a large workload students are very prone to health issues and stress. Homework is a large contributing factor to a student's stress.Researchers surveyed students in 10 high–performing schools in California, and found that 56% of the students stated that homework was a primary stressor (Strauss). Reducing the amount of homework would be more beneficial to students than not. As students go throughout the school day the homework they get from each class piles up. Many students believe that homework is pointless since some teachers never look it over, and give a small amount of points for all of their work. Now this is not to say that homework should be worth more points. Rather, the amount of homework should be equal to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. What Does Homework Mean To You Essay People often say there aren't enough hours in the day, or there is not enough time to help out, or do homework, or do anything new that they want to do with someone that they want to do it with. School gives you a ton of homework, especially in college with both reading material and assignments. For someone like me, who struggles with reading, there just seems to be no point because I have a hard time comprehending what I read. It takes so long. I find time to work on my assignments little by little. It is hard for me to balance school, homework and working. I am fortunate that in my job I have a lot of down time which enables my being able to work on my homework while at work. My bosses are very understanding and encourage me to do well with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Persuasive Essay On Homework What the public is concerned about is if homework should even be assigned? Homework was contrived to prepare students and help them engage them in the content being taught. Homework also enacts time management skills and responsibility of growing young adults. Although the debate about if homework should be given minimally or in discretion and that homework has no verified benefits still stands. Homework is necessary for causing students to be engaged in the content taught and delivers time management skills for the future. The stance that homework is necessary and helps students engage in the content and learn time management skills is one I concede with assiduously. Homework is given to students to help them retain the information they learned in class and leads to academic achievement. Many research studies have found evidence of a positive correlation between homework and student achievement. Since students are given homework nightly, it will help them absorb the content and they can score higher on a test or quiz. Homework also helps students develop responsibility and life skills, and prepares students in time management skills. Research claims the ability to manage tasks provides essential learning, increased motivation, and academic benefits. When students engage in homework it makes them more successful and independent in the long run. Although homework may take up time after an extracurricular and can lead to less sleep; for example, a student doing a sport after school, getting home and having to do homework on top of that. Doing an extracurricular and still completing homework are inherently important, students will gain time management skills if they are doing both. If a student can learn to juggle an extracurricular with homework it will help them learn life skills. Homework will lead to the academic growth, achievement, and the success of a student. The stance that homework is important, but discretion can and should be used when assigning it is one I partially concede with. Homework should be given in the accounts of different classes, since not all classes are the same. Homework is given in regards to class type (CP, Honors, Advanced–Placement), homework severs different classes by rigor Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Essay on Does Homework Actually Help Students Everyone at one point in time has complained they have had too much homework. Especially in High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not mind work load. They feel doing the problems, writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master material better than assigning less or none at all. I believe that...show more content... In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know. Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Argumentative Essay Homework Many students in school struggle to complete piles of homework assigned to them each night. Some wonder if homework is really critical to learning, and many wish homework wouldn't exist at all. These people argue that homework is overwhelming and it takes away most of their free time at home and is just "busy work". While some people may feel this way, I personally believe that homework is a key point of learning because it teaches time management and helps solidify what was learned during the day. Homework was first introduced to American schools around 1940, During this time, many students were not as invested in getting good grades. This was because there were other things that interested students; like farming or serving in the military. At that time, there were many valued occupations that didn't require rigorous education, and with WWII going on many had their minds elsewhere. Colleges were much easier to get into because there was less competition for spots. Because of that, working hard at school wasn't as necessary as it is now since good grades didn't pave the road to success like it does today. Since students didn't try as hard and weren't as focused, of much the information they learned during the day was quickly forgotten. Teachers, who realized this, decided to develop a strategy to force students to recall what they learned throughout the day; They decided to force students to do take home work to retain information better. Over the years children started Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Persuasive Essay On Homework Homework Giving homework is controversial in the world today. Many people think it is unnecessary to give homework, while other people think it is necessary. A lot of it also depends on the students that are getting the homework. Homework has many effects on students in all places and all grade levels, some good and some bad. Pressure and Stress From Homework Giving too much homework puts lots of pressure on students, causing stress. Homework should not pressure and stress out students as much as it does. First, homework puts a lot of pressure on students, not just high school students, but elementary and middle school students ("Is Homework a Good Idea" 5). Most of them are either afraid that their teacher or parents will be angry with them, they won't get into a class they want, or they won't get into the college they want if they don't get a good grade. While trying to get a good grade, students feel pressure being put on them by their family, teachers, and even colleges to get the good grades. From all this pressure students get stressed and giving them extra homework does not help (Wilde 2). Not only do they have the homework to worry about now, but they have their extracurricular and family activities to worry about. Homework doesn't just put pressure on students, it also interrupts their after school activities. Homework interrupting other activities Many students have after school activities, or want spend time with their families. None of this is possible when Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Should Homework In School Systems Be Stopped? Homework in School Systems Students, parents, teachers, administrators and other interested parties all seem to have strong and different feelings towards homework. Students complain that they have too much homework to complete outside of the hours they already attended classes. Students feel that they have personal lives to live and blow off homework while some parents and teachers believe that homework is the key to passing classes and preparation for college. This leads to teachers feeling pressured to push their students to succeed and this can easily get carried away. Parents and school systems still often discuss the topic of homework today. Should homework in school systems be stopped? The general arguments given by teachers and some parents are that homework increases the overall grade averages, sharpens study habits, and helps students become more prepared for college work. Along with that, it helps students learn responsibility for life in the work field of the real work. Although these arguments are valid, there are arguments against homework as well. Homework causes students to be stressed out when there is too much to be done by a certain deadline and takes away the free time of students. Some of the work that students are assigned isn't relevant to what they are studying. Worst of all, it causes that struggling student to lose interest in the study of that subject ("Students and Homework"). While it does have negative outcomes, homework also has it's perks. • 17. Homework: Beneficial or Not? What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time management. Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors! Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students. • 18. Homework Research Paper Students come home after school to many hours of seemingly pointless homework. Teachers should stop assigning homework because students receive too much homework everyday, it takes away from family time, and it has not improved student achievement. Students need time to live out their childhood and should not be forced to spend it completing homework Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Homework Schools should not give any homework to kids in elementary school. First, homework makes kids not get enough sleep and energy that they need for the next day. Especially because they probably have more school work the next day for them to do. Next, kids don't get enough family time after school or even on weekends which is not good because kids need family time once in awhile because it normally keeps kids going when they can have fun with their families. Also, homework can cause mental issues which can be bad for their health. Like depression or even just give kids bad thoughts of doing bad things. Additionally, a lot of other people also agree with me about the no homework policy because of these reasons. One reason we shouldn't have homework is because kids don't get enough sleep for the next day. "We really want the kids to go home at 4 o'clock, tired. We want their brain to be tired," Kelly Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen Said in an interview with a local TV station." Said time.com. First, Kids are already tired from school when they get home. But, with homework, they get tired faster and then don't even get enough sleep for the next day. Like the principal said they think that making kids tired is learning, but it doesn't really mean we're learning more, it is just wearing us out and making us not want to work any longer."Brandy Young told parents, she would not formally assign any homework this year, asking students instead to eat dinner with their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Homework As A Good Thing Essay Roth, Grace AP Lang Period 6 October 19, 2016 Abstract Homework has been considered apart of every child's learning experience in America, but there are many downsides to homework. Homework prevents children from exploring the world they live in, besides just what they learn in the classroom and prevents many other activities. Along with this, homework can be very unhealthy is child's life due to the amount of stress it causes. There is also evidence that suggests homework has no affect on learning and in many cases is counter productive. Homework causes many conflicts within families and is in many households left to the parents and not the students. The evidence of homework being a good thing is outweighed by the evidence that shows how homework can be a negative thing in many students lives. Citations Copping, J. (2014, January 16). • 21. The Importance of Homework Essay Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school. Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). Though studies examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC). Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource). Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance. Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more than an hour of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
