As the amount of productive land per capita reduces relative
to the growing global population, the concern to improve
agricultural productivity rises. Modern agriculture productivity
has provoked challenges due to the increased demand of the
population. Global food security is a significant concern as it
can’t meet human needs. A significant culprit of lower food
production is the low efficiency of conventional fertilizer
absorbed by plants.
To enhance crop productivity, slow-controlled release fertilizers are used
that can increase nutrient use efficiency and lower the negative impact
on the environment. Slow controlled-release fertilizers reduce nutrient
loss, increase crop production, and reduce plant toxicity and stress. A
wide range of fertilizer coating materials that is applied to granular or
prilled nitrogen fertilizers. As urea includes higher amounts of Nitrogen
of common soluble fertilizers, it has opted as a base material for most
SCR. Wax, oils, Nitrogen, and synthetic polymers are used for coating
and creating controlled release products.
Types of coated CRFs
•Polymer
•Sulfur
•Sulphur plus polymer
Polymer-coated fertilizers
They are types of CRF that are solid and coated with various polymers.
They are used for controlling product longevity and nutrient efficiency.
Polymer coatings can be semi-permeable or impermeable membranes
having tiny pores in them. The major disadvantage of polymer-coated
fertilizers is the coating material and process used for applying them.
The nutrients released are not affected by soil conditions like PH,
microbial activity, salinity, texture, or others but instead by temperature
and moisture of the polymer coating.

when water potential is steady,

Benefits of PCF
Sulfur
Elemental sulfur was widely used for fertilizer coating. Molten sulfur is
sprayed over urea granules, and sealant wax is applied to close any
cracks or imperfections. Later it was adopted when sulfur was coated
with a thin layer of organic polymer. Sulfur cuts down the solubility rate
of fertilizer granules and slowly discharges nutrients into the soil. It is
an essential nutrient that is beneficial for crops and usually used in
alkaline soil to nullify the alkaline effect caused by its net acidic
reaction.
It is cheap and relatively eco-friendly to alkaline solids compared to other polymeric
materials. The primary benefit of sulfur coated urea fertilizers is it enhances
nutrients of Nitrogen and sulfur.
Sulfur + polymer-coated
To solve uneven nutrient release issues from sulfur-coated urea, a hybrid of sulfur
and polymer-coated was developed. It includes thin polymer coating along with
low-cost sulfur coating that provides a better seal than only sulfur and only polymer
products. Polymer-coated urea has a water-insoluble layer that temporarily isolates
the urea prill.
It is possible to predict and control the release rate of nutrients
from this hybrid compared to other options.

Dust control coatings
As the name suggests, they are anti-dust agents that will reduce dust
emissions. Fertilizer quality can be reduced from the production
process through transport and storage; anti-dust agents prevent the
fertilizers from stagnating and prevents dust contamination off from
fertilizers. Coatings cannot enhance fertilizer that already faces quality
problems; however, to minimize the common fertilizer quality issues,
anti dust agents are used.
