3. Oleksa was born in the Hutsul village
of Pechenizhin in the Carpathian
Mountains in the early 18 th century.
Many folk songs and a few prose legends
that still survive in Prykarpattya portray
him as a local hero who robbed the rich
and helped the poor serfs. He was like
Robin Hood in England.
His portraits were sold at local market
places.

expedition of 2000
soldiers, headed by a
Polish magnate, was
sent to stop Olexa’s
rebellious army.
Nonetheless, he
couldn’t be captured.
Oleksa was killed by
Stepan Dzvinchuck,
who worked with the
Polish and betrayed
him.
