radesmith, a leading South
East window, door and
conservatory manufacturer
and Halo Approved Fabricator has
become one of the industry’s first
companies to achieve the coveted
PAS 24 security standard on a low-
threshold French door.
PAS 24 – a UK standard for door
and window security performance
– is only achievable by submitting
products for certification with a
UKAS-accredited testing house,
and represents a significant and
sustained effort from the manufac-
turer to reach the required levels
of protection.
Tradesmith Managing Direc-
tor, Mark Hutchinson explained:
“We’re thrilled that Tradesmith
has become the first fabricator to
achieve PAS 24 on a low-threshold
French door using The VEKA UK
Group’s Halo profile.
“The Government’s Document
Q guidance – one of a number of
documents pertaining to achieve-
ment of the 2010 Building Regu-
lations – came into effect at the
start of October, and recommends
that all buildings be fitted with
doorsets and windows designed to
meet PAS 24 or similar.
“We presented the completed
door for independent assessment
‘off our own bat’, without needing
to piggyback on the test results
of components that make up the
design, and it’s great to be able to
display the PAS 24 logo alongside
our Secured by Design accredita-
tion – the official Police initiative,
aimed at ‘designing out crime’ in
physical security measures.”
Besides working closely with Halo
– part of The VEKA UK Group –
Tradesmith also collaborated with
other highly respected suppliers,
including Paddock / Yale and Win-
lock to ensure the door reached
the necessary standard.
“What Tradesmith has achieved is
no mean feat”, commented Colin
Torley, Sales and Marketing Direc-
tor of The VEKA UK Group. “To
achieve PAS 24 certification is a
challenge in itself, let alone with
a low-threshold French Door that
must be able to offer unhindered
mobility access as well as the re-
quired security credentials.
“It’s great to see Halo profile play
such an integral part in this wor-
thy project and I’d like to congrat-
ulate Tradesmith on behalf of The
VEKA UK Group for this accom-
plishment.”
Mark added: “This product is a
great addition to our TS Collec-
tion and will be available to all our
trade customers. Anybody inter-
ested in finding out more should

LUMI SHINES WITH BIGGEST ORDER YET
ON ITS OWN DOORSTEP
A
peer is celebrating the biggest order to
date for its Lumi seamless window and
door system, and despite the company
being close to completing its UK-wide installer
network, the £70,000 order is for a project just
half a mile from its Ballymena HQ and factory.
The large bespoke new-build house will include
a number of windows, Lumi doors and sliding
doors, all in the radical new system. Construction
on the house began in September and is expected
to be completed by late August 2016. The system
was first suggested to the property owner and the
architects by local installer T&L Frames, which
had experience of Apeer through installing the
company’s existing Apeer door range.
Jason Fleck of FmK Architecture said: “This is
an absolutely unique system and ideal for this
house. We have since shown it to a number of
clients and will go on suggesting it in locations
that suit this style and budget.”
Apeer Marketing Manager Linda Tomb said:
“There has been a tremendous reaction to Lumi
since its launch which has led to a good many
orders and this is the first one on this scale in our
local market. It is ironic that it should be so close
to our base, though it’s quite discretely located
so we won’t actually be able to see it.
Lumi took the Grand Designs Live show by storm
in May when it was launched to widespread ac-
claim. The range includes windows, doors and a
matching bi-fold system. The sliding doors, as
chosen for this unique house installation, will be
fully introduced early in 2016.
The Lumi system is the latest range from Apeer,
which also includes its Traditional, Contempo-
rary and the ultra-contemporary Modo compos-
ite door collections.

E
verglade is the first UK
supplier to offer PremiLine
PRO, the new Lifetime
Homes-compliant sliding patio
door from Kömmerling.
Designed by Kömmerling, Pre-
miLine PRO is the only sliding pa-
tio door which meets the qualify-
ing design criteria of the standard
and has Secured by Design (SBD)
accreditation.
Building on their long-standing
relationship, the two companies
worked closely throughout the
development and testing process
leading to the creation of Pre-
miLine PRO, emphasising Ever-
glade’s position as the UK’s lead-
ing supplier of better Kömmerling
windows and doors.
The reasoning behind Lifetimes
Homes is simple. They are ordinary
homes designed to create better
living environments for everyone,
whether homeowners are raising
small children, coping with illness,
or dealing with reduced mobility.
PremiLine PRO has been devel-
oped with Fullex Locks to satisfy
the requirement for door handles
and operating controls to be no
higher than 1200mm from the
floor. This adds to the conveni-
ence of a home and supports the
changing needs of individuals and
families at different stages of life.
The new PremiLine PRO pa-
tio door also carries Secured by
Design accreditation. It’s got the
UK government’s new Document
Q regulations on home security
covered too.
This is particularly significant as
many other PVCu patio doors have
failed to achieve the high security
standards and don’t meet the new
regulations.
PremiLine PRO is available with
an enhanced security upgrade kit,
which includes a bespoke interlock
shootbolt system operated by a
small, stylish doorknob to the side
face of the interlock.
Such is the confidence in the up-
grade that lock manufacturer Full-
ex is offering a security guarantee
scheme. It offers up to £1,000 to
replace any damaged PremiLine
PRO door as well as compensation
in the event of break-in, for up to
10 years after the installation date.
The full Kömmerling PremiLine
sliding patio door range is also
environmentally friendly, as it’s
extruded using the company’s
Greenline lead-free PVCu com-
pound.
Jay Patel, Sales Director of Ever-
glade says: “Kömmerling has what
I believe to be the best range of
products in the industry. It match-
es our ambition to supply the best
windows and doors to our custom-
ers. PremiLine PRO is a high qual-
ity addition to our range of doors,
it’s simple to operate, fully secure
and in line with the increasingly-
popular Lifetime Homes standard.”

T
he high calibre standards
and breadth of choice found
in the frameXpress portfolio
has once again proved a winning
combination for owners of a luxu-
rious property in Hertfordshire.
Chartwell Green foil colour fin-
ish on white woodgrain made the
perfect choice for a modern ga-
rage loft conversion. The stylish
renovation also required a glazed
linked walkway to connect to the
main property.
Sophisticated design with guaran-
teed sound proofing were stipula-
tions of the contract. The team
manufactured a variety of prod-
ucts from the frameXpress range
which included large, shaped, A
rated units to make optimum use
of the natural light. Tilt and turn
windows also were installed in the
roof space to provide greater light,
additional ventilation as well as
quick and easy maintenance.
The walkway was designed to
complement the style of the
original buildings and to provide a
seamless link between the two. A
specially constructed glass lantern
roof was produced which incorpo-
rated high performance glass units
to ensure that year round usage
could be achieved.
Ian Davis, Sales Manager at fram-
eXpress comments, “The entire
project was manufactured accord-
ing to the exact specification of
the architect’s design and home-
owners’ wishes. As an extremely
high specification job which
required only the best structural
products, our portfolio proved
to be the best choice. Our high
manufacturing standards across
the range eliminate any technical
concerns for installers.
Ian concludes: “This particular
combination worked a treat and
provides a contemporary feel with
a classic finish that the respective
homeowner has been thrilled with
since completion.”
frameXpress is a leading manu-
facturer of windows, doors and
conservatories supplying custom-
ers across the UK via its national
fleet. With a customer oriented
focus, superior standards remain
priorities for the entire team.
The company operates out of a

tory in Telford, Shropshire fabri-
cating only the best quality prod-
ucts, including Profile 22 Systems

irmingham Council’s successful pilot
scheme to develop a number of energy
efficient Housing Association bungalows,
was a clever and successful endeavour accord-
ing to Sarah Price, Commercial Sales Manager at
frameXpress.
The company was contracted to supply a variety
of energy efficient products including Composite
Doors in oak foil finish, rear entrance doors and
white windows with astragal bars in FS70mm
system for eleven dormer bungalows. The pro-
ject was funded under the Homes and Communi-
ties Agency’s affordable homes programme via
the council’s building vehicle, the Birmingham
Municipal Housing Trust.
The £1.15 m pilot scheme in Selly Oak, Birming-
ham was initially developed to encourage el-
derly residents to move out of their family-sized
homes and generate space for larger families
who needed the accommodation. This particu-
lar development included a mix of two bedroom
bungalows and dormer bungalows that had been
designed by BM3 Architecture.
The bungalows were assembled in a horse-shoe
style layout that created a south facing internal
courtyard and provided both private and commu-
nal amenity space for the residents. The dwell-
ings were designed as a tight development, with
minimal gaps between dwellings to provide a
sense of community and security.

tomer who relies on the quality of the company’s

services, it was a successful project from the out-
set with many tenants signed up to the bungalow
scheme before completion.
Sarah Price believes that this type of commercial
venture will become increasingly popular across
the sector as the need to cater for an increasingly
elderly population augments. She comments,
“Safe, secure, energy efficient housing such as
this project will become more frequent in the
commercial sector as the need to reduce under-
occupancy of larger family-sized homes will
continue.
Likewise, in general, with the economic recovery
in full swing and money flowing back into com-
mercial development, the market is much more
buoyant. Products and services on the commer-
cial side of the market are much more exciting
and there is real potential within this arena.”
frameXpress is a leading fabricator of windows,
doors and conservatories in pvc-u and alumin-
ium. The company also offers bifold doors, its
own composite door range as well as a variety
of roofing options including thermally efficient
glazing and Guardian Roof options.

ocated in the heart of the Drayton Manor
Theme Park, the 4 Star Drayton Manor
Hotel has undergone substantial renova-
tion recently which incorporated products from
the TuffX range.
Situated within 280 acres of lakes and parklands
near Tamworth, Staffordshire, just a few minutes
drive from the NEC complex, the hotel combines
stylish executive suites with luxurious rooms for
families to stay in when visiting one of the UK’s
best loved theme parks.
As a project it was essential that the hotel could
also offer improved conference and banqueting
suites as part of its renovation programme. En-
suring that the high standards of the hotel were
reflected in its redesign, only premium products
would be accepted for the installation.
For this particular commercial project, TuffX
supplied 125m2 of 10mm Clear Toughened glass
in a variety of shapes and rectangles. This was
subsequently incorporated into balustrades on
every level of the hotel as well as being installed
as part of a grand staircase.
TuffX Processed Glass manufactures high per-
formance toughened safety glass in a variety of
thicknesses and styles including balustrading,
stairs, glass canopies and curtainwalling as well
as glass furniture, which made the portfolio the
ideal choice for the longstanding customer.
In recent years TuffX has invested heavily in

24. From powder to profile
Eddy Webb,Works Manager at HL
Plastics, explains the process of
how powder is transformed into
profile…
Starting at the silos
“Unlike many of our competitors,
Liniar lead-free PVCu window
profile is fully manufactured in
Britain.The process of extrusion
begins with the delivery of resin to
our silos. We have eight in total, four
of which are for the delivery of the
raw ingredients that are used in the
mixing plant to produce our dry
blend.
“The resin passes through the
mixing plant and four other
materials are added. It’s then
transported into the four
‘production silos’ ready to be
transferred to the extrusion lines in
the factory.
Mixing it up
“Our mixing plant is one of the
biggest in Europe and has been
custom-built to cope with the
demands of production and we
only use the highest quality,
lead-free raw materials.
“Those ingredients are transferred
from the silos and smaller
additive stations to a holding
hopper where they are weighed
before being added to a heater
mixer.
“A temperature of 120°C is
applied to blend all of the
ingredients together and then
dropped into the cooler mixer
where the temperature will be
brought back down to 40°C before
being transferred into bags or a
silo.
Extrusion solutions
“Each of our silos has the facility to
connect to any of our 32
extrusion lines, enabling us to
accommodate for any possible
requirement and maximise
productivity.
“The powder is transported by
vacuum from one of the silos
outside into a hopper, which
controls the rate of flow to the feed
port of the extruder barrel.
The Liniar brand is synonymous with innovation and quality, with a range
of windows, doors and conservatories designed and manufactured by HL
Plastics at a state-of-the-art extrusion facility in the heart of the UK.
But what exactly is extrusion?
25. “The purpose of an extruder is to
melt, mix and pump the plastics
material to the die at a steady rate
and constant temperature using
a screw; very much like a kitchen
mincer with a screw inside a barrel
and a feed chamber, or hopper, on
top.
“The screw is rotated by a
motor and the plastics material
is heated as the screw conveys it
along the barrel to the die, which
determines the shape of the
product.The die, which can be
quite complex in design, is simply
a shaped opening through which
the plasticised material, or melt, is
pushed.
“When the screw is rotated the
material is carried along and
compressed.The friction created
generates heat which converts the
solids into a ‘plasticised’ or semi
molten state, mixing the
material in the process.
“The melt, or extrudate, is pumped
out of the die at 192°C and then
formed in a water-cooled
calibrator by vacuum, before
being cooled in water baths
containing tank plates.
Keeping cool
“It’s worth mentioning that when
the new HL Plastics factory
building was designed, one of the
key requirements was to keep the
water for the extrusion process
controlled in a facility where it
could be easily looked after. For
that reason our water pits are
located underneath the factory.
“We felt that this was vital for
operational reasons.There are no
pipes or utilities on show, making
for a safer and neater working
environment, and any required
service and maintenance can be
carried out without affecting
production. Being able to carry out
work underground means that the
installation of new machinery lines
is much simpler.
“We have three separate
water pits which provides added
resilance to production should
a problem occur.Also, because
these pits were built underneath
the factory, it stops pests being
able to contaminate the water and
prevents any freezing during the
winter months.
“Water purification and filtration
systems have been introduced to
assist with the process and the
water is dosed with chemicals
to keep it clean and prevent the
growth of any bacteria.
Fantastic gasket
“The co-extrusion process takes
place further down the line.This
is where Liniar’s patented flexible
‘bubble’ gasket is added to the
rigid profile using a separate
co-extruder.
“The gasket is bonded onto the
profile using pressure and heat, so
the seals don’t have to be added
at the fabrication stage. Once
adhered to the profile, it proceeds
through a cooling vacuum tank.
“The extrusion process is a
continuous one, so a constant
pulling of the profile is necessary
to maintain shape, accuracy and
dimensions. Once it passes through
the haul-off section, protective tape
is applied before the profile is cut to
length on a saw unit.
Quality assured
“We place the utmost value in the
excellence of our facilities and the
products we manufacture - our
factory has achieved BS EN ISO
9001:2008 accreditation to meet
British Standards for a quality
management system.
“The quality control department is
essential to inspect the condition of
the profiles that are produced;
Liniar profiles are examined 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
“Every hour an operator will
perform a dimensional, functional
and colour check on the profile,
while every four hours a shadow
graph is used.
“A section of profile is cut and
placed on a magnifying lens to
project the shape on to a diagram
so that dimension, shape and
parallelism can be assessed to be
certain of perfection.
Out of the factory
“Once the profile has been
produced, wrapped and packed,
it’s moved to a holding area where
it’s checked to ensure that the
quantities and component names
are correct.
“If the profiles are due to be foiled,
they are sent to our in-house foiling
plant, where Liniar’s high quality
coloured woodgrain foils are fitted
using the latest high-tech
machinery.
“If not, they are picked up and
taken over to the warehouse, then
checked again before being
added to stock. Our S.A.P. system
records each movement within the
operation, helping us to keep track
of all products.
Delivering the best
“Our warehouse contains stock of
all the different Liniar products.
Customer orders are picked here
and then packed into stillages to
be loaded onto one of our fleet of
lorries. Once ready, they’re
delivered to our nationwide
network of fabricator customers to
be transformed into beautiful
windows, doors and
conservatories.”

ENSA is strengthening its
processes and committing
more resources to identify-
ing misuse of the FENSA name and
logo and the resultant misleading
of homeowners. This will lead
to more naming and shaming of
offenders and the eventual in-
volvement of Trading Standards to
which offending installers will be
referred for prosecution.
A recent successful prosecution,
with FENSA’s assistance, by Trad-
ing Standards in north London for
FENSA logo misuse resulted in a
total cost to the directors of over
£7,000 in fines and costs.
It is illegal for window and door
installers to claim they are FENSA
certified when they are not. Dis-
playing the FENSA logo and using
the FENSA name in this way mis-
leads homeowners.
Where FENSA is made aware of
such misuse it will act. It will also
refer the matter to local Trading
Standards, which has the power to
prosecute.
FENSA will be undertaking its own
searches to identify misuse – but
would also appreciate the help
of the industry and consumers.
FENSA can be notified directly of
logo and name misuse (email or
tel: 020 7645 3700) or indirectly
through www.cowboystoppers.
co.uk - a website set up by FENSA
exactly for this purpose.
“It is important for both our
certified installers that play by the
rules and the consumer that when
a company states that it is with
FENSA this is true,” commented
FENSA managing director Chris
Mayne. “There are too many un-
scrupulous operators out there de-
meaning the FENSA name, under-
cutting bone fide FENSA installers
and misleading homeowners. We
all have to work together to stamp
out these practices.”
Misleading claims such as these
outlined are regarded very seri-
ously by bodies such as Trading
Standards. “An offence under the
Regulations can attract a £5,000
fine if heard in magistrates’ court,
or an unlimited fine and/or 2 years’
imprisonment if heard at crown
court. Enforcement is by local au-
thority trading standards officers.”

riminals are telephoning
FENSA registered installers
claiming to be from FENSA,
and asking for their bank card details.
They are claiming that this informa-
tion is required so that FENSA can refund
installers monies that it owes them. They tell
installers that FENSA has sent out a letter about
refunds and that they are following up on this
letter.
FENSA will never contact installers asking for
their bank account or card infor mation – and is
not in the process of refunding monies to any
registered businesses. FENSA has not sent out
any letters about refunds.
If an installation company has been telephoned
in this way they should contact the police
by dialling 101 and give this crime number:
NFRC151101236514. They should also report it
to FENSA.
The scammers appear to be using publicly avail-
able information from the FENSA website – com-
pany name, address and telephone number – to
target installers. FENSA has contacted the police
and reported this activity to Action Fraud.
FENSA has immediately emailed all registered
businesses and posted a log in message on the
website to warn them of this problem and has
also issued this warning via social media.
“We were informed by seven installers on
Wednesday 17 November that they had been
contacted by persons purporting to be from FEN-
SA, and asking for their bank card details,” ex-
plained FENSA managing director Chris Mayne.
“In this day and age it seems to be one of the
dangers of being a well known and prominent
organisation. We have immediately emailed all
installers to warn them of this criminal activity,
and issued a warning at the point of log in on the
FENSA website. We are now repeating this warn-
ing via social media and through the trade press.”

WINTECH SUPPORTS INDUSTRY WITH Q

intech Testing, the UKAS accred-
ited testing specialist, has perhaps
unsurprisingly seen an increase
in the number of enquiries for testing for
the Approved Document Q: Security, but the
company’s support has extended far beyond
its core testing business.
“As technical experts in the window, door
and glazing sectors, we understand what
products need to do to comply with new and
existing legislation,” says Mike Wass, Tech-
nical Director of Wintech Testing, “which is
perhaps why we have been inundated with
enquires on the subject, and not just with
regards to testing requirements.
“Of course testing is the main area that we
help companies – by explaining the vari-
ous routes to compliance and how to prove
compliance through testing. However, in
this instance we have also been approached
by several component suppliers wanting to
provide their customers with the facts in
information leaflets, so have worked in part-
nership to produce literature that does ex-
actly that. Meanwhile one of our Directors,
Steve Bramhill, has also presented to Glass
and Glazing Federation members about the
confusion surrounding compliance to the Ap-
proved Document.
“Our recently launched WinMark Enhanced
Security Certification schemes also expand
our offering because they cover the require-
ments of Secured by Design, which is becom-
ing increasingly important to companies who
want to go the extra mile and our Enhanced
Security Certification schemes are one route
to compliance with the requirements of Ap-
proved Document Q.
“Companies tell us they value our advice on
compliance with legislation, especially new
standards, because we are completely inde-
pendent with no vested interest in any one
product. We take this responsibility seriously
and are proud to work with companies seek-
ing to offer fully compliant products.”

fter two years of watching the FIT Show
develop into one of the most important
events in the window industry’s business
and social calendar, Olney-based Roseview Windows
decided it was an exhibition that they couldn’t afford
not to be fully part of.
“I walked the halls in 2013 and 2014 critically observing
our competitors’ stands, and by the end of it I felt we
had to be a part of The FIT Show 2016,” Mike Bygrave,
Roseview Windows’ marketing manager, said. “We
simply have to be there alongside the other big names
in the industry because we are a leading player in
PVCU sash windows.”
Roseview hasn’t been completely absent from view
during previous events. Rehau included an example
from its Charisma range on its stand as an example of
vertical slider best practice, and several members of
the senior management team attended the FIT Show
over multiple days in 2013 and 2014.
“It’s a great event to be involved with,” Mike said.
“We’ve attended the gala dinners, and have already
bought a table in anticipation of the next one in April.
We also took part in the 2014 photography competition
as ‘Sash Fellas’.
“However, rather than stand on the sidelines looking
in, we want to make as much as possible of the
excitement and optimism that the show generates, and
take the opportunity to meet and greet our customers,
while welcoming new ones.”
Roseview, which often gets specified in conservation
areas thanks to authentic detailing, including run-
through sash horns, plans to exhibit its main sash
window ranges – Charisma, Heritage and Ultimate – as
well as its secondary glazing options.

The Gala Dinner has proved to be an overwhelming

E
choing last year’s achievement, Synseal
has been named as a double finalist once
again at the upcoming G15 Awards.
Global Glass, Synseal’s insulated glass
manufacturing division, is a finalist for Glass
Company of the Year. Since establishment in
November 2011 Global Glass has rapidly become
a £20 million business unit operating from
three plants in Huthwaite, Blackburn and Wigan
supplying high quality IGUs made to customer
specification, including Synseal’s exclusive
value-adding and thermally-efficient Celsius
performance glass.
The second category for which Synseal has been
shortlisted is Trade Marketing Campaign of the
Year. Synseal’s creative marketing campaign for
Celsius Solid Roof was designed to grab attention
and clearly convey key technical aspects of
the system (quick-fitting, highly insulated,
lightweight yet strong) with an element of fun,
using animals to illustrate. Launched in April
2015,this integrated B2B campaign delivered high
levels of visual impact to achieve market stand-
out versus competitive offerings and included
print and digital media to raise awareness across
the Trade in a short period of time.
“It is very satisfying for us to be recognised as
a double-double finalist at the prestigious G
Awards,” comments Synseal’s Head of Marketing,
Mark Schlotel. “We enjoy taking part with three
submissions presented to the judges each year
and, as the old song goes, two out of three ain’t
bad! This double finalist accolade reflects how
dynamically our Synseal group has evolved in
recent times and we look forward to a great night
of celebration for our industry at the London

n a recent interview David Thornton, head of the
award winning installer The Window Company
(Contracts) Ltd, told readers how ‘at least half a
dozen’ of his company’s new suppliers were found by
visiting The FIT Show last June.“Before we attended we
researched The FIT Show and prepared meticulously
and as a result have met at least half a dozen of our new
suppliers as a result of visiting…” said David.
In the editorial, in which David discussed how he
and one of his company’s primary suppliers Glazerite
came together after meeting at last year’s FIT Show,
he discusses the importance of the preparation he and
his team make before visiting: “When we visit the next
FIT Show in April next year we will take along a pre-
prepared synopsis so that exhibitors that we approach
have more information from the outset and can better
respond to our needs when they come back to us after
the event.” Such attention to detail also extends to
post show contact: “When we get into discussions with
potential suppliers after the show we take along our
balance sheet to show them who they are dealing with.”
David added: “In addition to researching the event
beforehand usually I go up a day earlier and make a list
of who we want to see and then we go round the event as
a team and follow up with who we want to see. We want
to see and be seen, to be in at the beginning of any new
products and trends. When the team comes up and they
have been round the show, we then meet to compare
notes to make sure we haven’t missed anything.”
The Window Company (Contracts) is now one of the
South East’s leading specialist commercial window and
door installers winning and retaining contracts from
some of the region’s biggest contractors and social
housing providers. The company won the Installer of
the Year title in at the 2014 G Awards.
David also offered advice to exhibitors: ““I like
controlled enthusiasm,” says David. “I don’t want to
be attacked but neither can I stand the sight of people
sitting down on a stand. Stand design is not an issue
usually but tidiness, organisation and readiness is!”

THE CONSULTANCY NEEDS YOU
D
IGITAL specialist The Consultancy is
looking for your support as the deadline
for the industry’s fastest-growing awards
draws closer.
After taking the winning title last year, The
Consultancy has once again been nominated for
Digital Specialist of the year at the National Fen-
estration Awards.
The independent awards rely on nominations, a
stark contrast to the traditional judging panel,
meaning the decision is made by the industry as
a whole rather than a selected panel of individu-
als.
Richie Thornton, Director of The Consultancy,
said: “We were overwhelmed after winning last
year. This really is the industry’s own awards
ceremony, and to know that our customers and
friends secured us that win is a great feeling.
“We never would have imagined that, we would
have a chance for two years in a row. But making
it through to the voting stage, we’re really look-
ing forward to hearing the results.”
Voting is simple and can be done by visiting
http://bit.ly/TCVote2015. All that’s required is to
make an individual online account and place a
vote. Voting closes on November 30 2015.
Richie continued: “To have the support of the
industry again would be a great feeling.
“Throughout the past year we’ve worked tire-
lessly to continue bringing the industry into the
digital age, tailoring online solutions for the
homeowner, installer and manufacturer.
“As a company we have raised the profile of
bespoke online ordering software and product
configuration, and will continue to do so.

VISITOR REGISTRATION GOES LIVE
ON FIT SHOW WEBSITE:
SKIP THE QUEUES BY REGISTERING NOW!
A
dvanced visitor registration for The
Fabricator Installer Trade (FIT) Show,
already confirmed as the biggest
trade event for the window, door, conserva-
tory and glass industries for at least a decade,
is now live on the FIT Show website at www.
fitshow.co.uk/reserve-your-tickets.
Registering early brings benefits to visitors
through regular updates that allow advanced
planning for the event. Of these perhaps the
most important will be the ability to skip
past the queues straight into the halls with
a simple swipe of a personalised badge. Only
pre-registered visitors will receive their entry
badge in advance.
A ‘Save the Date’ button automatically gen-
erates a calendar entry in users’ diaries. A
further convenience will be the advanced in-
formation about exhibitors and products that
pre-registered visitors will receive in addi-
tion to information such as details of the FIT
for Business seminar programme and Master
Fitter Challenge. As the event approaches
helpful notes about parking and access for
example, will all serve to make a visit to The
FIT Show easier and more rewarding.
More than 170 exhibitors, the most yet at
The FIT Show, will occupy four halls at The
International Centre, Telford on the 12th,
13th and 14th April 2016. With a gap of al-
most two years since the last event hundreds
of new products and services are being ex-
hibited for the first time with many being
launched at The FIT Show. It is known that
the event will be used to launch a number
of brand new window systems, in addition
to the largest number of trade fabricators
47. and machinery suppliers to appear at any UK
trade show for the industry for at least ten
years.
“This show really reflects the tremendous,
positive attitude that prevails in the mar-
ket amongst manufacturers currently,” ex-
plained Paul Godwin, managing director of
FIT Events, which organises The FIT Show.
“We understand that there will be a number
of brand new window systems launched in
addition to hundreds of other new products.
Most of these will be seen for the first time
anywhere. In a market as competitive as the
UK home improvement sector, a day or two
at The FIT Show will bring visitors right up
to date with the latest products and services
available to sharpen their competitive edge.”
The Fabricator Installer Trade (FIT) Show
takes place at The International Centre Tel-
ford on 12th, 13th 14th April 2016. General

THE EXPERT BRAND FOR
WINDOW AND DOOR HARDWARE
25
Years
51. M
ulti-Matic is available in both surface fit and
‘Invisible’ concealed hinge versions, and in
standard and PAS24 security configurations.
PAS24 kits feature IS (Intelligent Security) mushroom
roller cams, which are adjustable for compression and
height. The revolving action of the cam means that
operation is very smooth even on security windows
that include many locking points.
Multi-Matic has been developed with an eye on fully
and semi automated window assembly lines. Features
include Klix-fix clips that hold the hardware into the
Eurogroove prior to fixing and a ‘crop & punch’ con-
nection system where cutting to size is required. VBH
advise that Multi-Matic can also be easily assembled
on a manual line by utilising optional connector
plates. These enable manual cropping of the hard-
ware without the need to punch a hole in the cropped
faceplate end.
Multi-Matic carries sashes weighing up to 100KG but
this can be increased further on Invisible hardware by
fitting Maco’s innovative Multi-Power hinge system.
Multi-Power hinges allow sashes weighing up to
150KG to be installed without the need for additional
support. This feature is an important one as the call
for triple glazed windows becomes more common-
place.
The dual purpose sash lifter guides the sash into the
turn position so heavy windows close smoothly, mini-
mising wear and tear. It also acts as a mishandling
device to prevent the sash from entering the tilt and
turn positions simultaneously.
Multi-Matic is supplied in Maco’s standard Silver-
look surface protection finish. It can also be supplied
in TRICOAT-PLUS finish to provide additional pro-
tection on installations in coastal areas or in regions
with other aggressive atmospheres, such as heavy
industry.
VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says ‘We’ve
been supplying Maco tilt and turn systems into the
UK since the early ‘80s and they’ve always been well
received by the market due to Maco’s excellent qual-
ity and features. Multi-Matic builds on those with in-
novations such as the Multi-Power hinge that enables
even the heaviest sashes to be installed.
‘The product is tried and tested in continental Europe
and we’re confident it will be a big hit with UK install-
ers and, of course, manufacturers of all sizes.’ Multi-
Matic features in VBH’s Maco Tilt & Turn Hardware
Systems catalogue which can be downloaded from

VBH STOCKS MACO MULTI-MATIC TILT & TURN
52. T
he Trojan Group is one of
the industry’s major door
and window hardware
manufacturing success stories
throughout a decade in which
many have experienced significant
decline.
For Tony Chadwick, Group Man-
aging Director, there are many
reasons for this success but the
vital key factors are their patented
innovations, strategic vision and
Trojan Group’s “in-house” manu-
facturing and quality control.
“Trojan’s single biggest reason
for success is that we design and
manufacture products that offer
solutions to problems and include
patented features that deliver a
real return on investment, all at a
competitive price” says Tony. “Our
customers really value what we
bring to their business and look to
us as leaders in the window and
door sector to continuously im-
prove products year on year.”
Trojan Group has maintained
innovation coupled with a com-
petitive pricing strategy despite
rapidly changing market forces
thanks to considerable strategic
vision. “We operate in a global
market and we need to protect our
business and our customers from
the worst fluctuations,” comments
Tony.
“At that time, we benefited from
having our own in-group manufac-
turing base, Trojan China. It meant
that, unlike the hardware compa-
nies that outsource their products
to third parties, many of which are
supplied from the same factory, we
emerged relatively unscathed.”
“We have seen something similar
recently,” adds Tony. “We have all
read articles in the media saying
hardware companies are struggling
to achieve viable margins, reduc-
ing workforces and consequently
limiting investment in innovation
and development. Unfortunately,
as we all know, China manufactur-
ing has become progressively less
competitive and their only way to
reduce costs is effectively lower
product specifications or higher
production output per employee.”
“Thankfully, we have once again
read the signs before they hap-
pened and opened a purpose-built
manufacturing site in Vietnam
protecting us from developments
in the Chinese market. It means
we have greater stability and con-
trol over our costs throughout the
inevitable cycles of this developing
economy compared to many other
hardware manufacturers. There
is no doubt that this is something
our customers appreciate.”
The Trojan Group’s reputation for
hardware innovation is unparal-
leled. But it is also clear that the
company’s wider set up and strate-
gic intelligence means it offers its
customers a truly great experience.
It’s perhaps hardly surprising Tro-
jan Group is as successful as it is.

56. Slide & Fold Doors and Windows.
I
nvisifold Ltd and VBH have teamed up to develop and
launch an exciting new system for slide & fold doors
and windows.
The system, known as greenteQ Invisifold, is unique and
will be available for most profile systems over the coming
months. The new system is being introduced by VBH this
winter and includes applications for doors, tilt & turn
windows and even outward opening casement windows.
VBH advise that as far as they are aware, this is the only
solution that allows standard profiles to be used for slide
& fold door and window applications.
The systems have been thoroughly tested through many
installations in the UK and are also currently undergoing
testing for PAS24. Invisifold will, consequently, comply
with Document Q once certification has been issued on
a given profile. Initial indicative tests have been very
positive, with excellent weather ratings and resistance to
forced entry.
Peter Rowlands, MD of VBH commented: ‘We have seen
the interest in slide and fold systems growing in the
market place and noted the general excitement around
these products from a consumer view point. The market
for bi-fold doors has grown rapidly and exposed the
consumer desire to open the home completely to external
areas such as patios and gardens. greenteQ Invisifold
solutions provide an extension of this market, allowing
more flexibility in that the sashes can be neatly stacked
or part opened and closed to allow more variation in the
opening space.
‘The greenteQ Invisifold design is a major step forward
as it allows standard profiles to be used for both doors
and windows. The fact that the system has the potential
to be Document Q compliant is also hugely beneficial as
this style of opening is perfect for new build installations.
‘The partnership between the two companies came
about as VBH were looking to develop a solution for
fold and slide. Neil Ingram and Steve Smith had formed
Invisifold Ltd and were already well advanced with their
own development work. The partnership combines
the creative and design expertise of Invisifold with
VBH’s international logistics competence and technical
support.
‘It is not very often that anyone can say that they have a
completely unique offering in the market, so we are very
excited about the potential of Invisifold products in the
UK and world-wide! We look forward to presenting them
to our customers in the near future.’
Further information, including demonstration videos,
can be found at www.invisifold.com, while pricing and
availability enquiries should be made directly with VBH

REVOLUTIONARY AUTOLOCK
LAUNCHED BY JOHN FREDERICKS
F
or John Fredericks, launching a dynamic, new
security product on today’s market takes more
than a simple evaluation of current industry
products and then making improvements on what
already exists. Revolutionising a sector takes time,
patience and a commitment to innovation that will
provide a unique solution, which combines superior
quality and lasting guarantees.
As such, the R&D department at John Fredericks
has taken this responsibility very seriously with the
launch of a new, fully patented product that will
revolutionise door security across the UK and Europe.
When looking at tomorrow’s secure door market the
company considered it vitally important to consider
today’s issues with an eye on future market direction
and end user requirements. Consequently, the new
Autolock was created which provides the ultimate in
security and functionality.
For the last 18 months, technicians and senior
management at the company have been working
closely with the MACO team in Austria and the UK,and
subsequently have introduced the proven, patented
door locking solution for domestic and commercial
applications. This device is available exclusively from
John Fredericks and can be adapted for a broad range
of applications including domestic properties,schools,
commercial premises and properties with high security
specifications.
Currently it is estimated that 70% of consumers do not
use the multi-point locking facility now fitted to most
pvc-u doors, leaving people vulnerable to break-ins
and the door susceptible to misalignment.
With this in mind, the Research and Development
team evaluated the needs of all types of consumers
during the design and development stages of the new
Autolock product. In particular, this new system now
provides specific technical advantages for the elderly
and vulnerable, which was an essential part of the
product development according to Managing Director,
Steve Darkins.
The unique capabilities of the Autolock maximises
security via IS. cams and hookbolt combinations that
are PAS24 tested. On closing the door, all locking
points are automatically triggered without any need
to activate the lever handle, and a turn of the key
deadlocks the door. This also prevents the door from
bowing as the locking points are always engaged when
the door is closed.
Subsequently, the configuration of the device
completely eliminates warping, twisting and air leaks
thanks to meticulous Austrian design from the MACO
engineers. The distinctive features of this proven
device provide a unique ten point locking system that
automatically secures the door via the MACO ‘Silent
Latch’ function. This ensures easy to use doors with
latch compression and a flexible adjustment on the
lock side.
The Autolock is available only from John Fredericks
and will be introduced initially as a standard fitting on
all new composite doors and other single doors in the
company’s range from 1st December 2015, with the
idea of developing this further and rolling it out into a
double door solution early in 2016.
Recognised as an industry leader in relation to
thermally efficient, innovative, pvc-u windows and
doors, the company also supplies purpose-driven
locking devices and a wide range of exceptional
solutions for the building sector.
Kevin Whiting, Managing Director of MACO UK, long
term partners with John Fredericks Plastics, a division
of A&B Glass Group, commented: ‘’MACO understood
thedetailedfindingsbytheresearchcarriedoutbyJohn
Fredericks Plastics in regards to specifically targeting

59
the problem of consumers not properly locking their
doors, whilst at the same time still enabling the elderly
and less able to operate them easily.
John Fredericks Plastics commissioned our Research
and Development teams in the UK and Austria to fulfil
this need, we in turn developed a smooth operating,
highly secure automatic door lock with absolute
minimal force required to lock it. Simply push the door
closed and a turn of the key it’s locked.’’
When A&B Glass Group approached MACO some
18 months ago to develop the project MACO were
driven to ensure that their in-depth knowledge of
the industry was paramount to the door locks’ final
design and build, the design and engineering is a truly
revolutionary solution not just for today but also the
future of the door locking industry as a whole.
The system is extremely versatile and can be
configured for all styles of single doors including
composite doors. Ensuring customers can offer
innovative design options that will provide matchless
security and exceptional quality has been a priority for
management at both John Fredericks and MACO.
Steve Darkins, Managing Director at John Fredericks
comments, “The new Autolock has been meticulously
designed alongside the MACO development team, with
the specific purpose of bringing a lock to the market
that excels in terms of performance and security
standards.
We are driven to satisfy the emerging lock needs of an
ever changing market and believe that the Autolock
will deliver the perfect combination of optimum
security and easy use. The John Fredericks brand
has an established pedigree for excellence, leading
the market in terms of performance guarantees and
security features and this new system is a testament to
our progressive approach to innovation and customer
support.”

B
ertrange, Luxembourg, November 6,
2015 – Guardian Industries’ Glass Group
has invested more than £4 million to
develop and implement a customized Waste
Heat Recovery System (WHRS) at its Goole glass
manufacturing plant. The company embarked on
the WHRS project at the start of this year at the
East Yorkshire plant.
The new system will provide half the electrical
energy needed to operate Guardian’s full float
line, which in turn will reduce its dependency
on the grid and effectively reduce its CO2
emissions by some 6,000 tons per year. In terms
of environmental impact, that’s the equivalent
of taking nearly 2,200 cars off the road.
Float glass manufacturing requires a large
amount of energy. Running a furnace at about
1,600ºC around the clock, seven days a week, 365
days a year, consumes a lot of natural resources.
The nature of the float glass process means that
heat inevitably escapes the furnace.
Guardian’s new WHRS uses a complex method of
capturing waste heat from the furnace without
disrupting the delicate convection currents,
which continually flow inside the furnace as the
batch material is turned to molten glass.
This system represents a new approach both for
Guardian and for the glass industry as a whole.
“This is another great example of Guardian
striving toward operational excellence,” said
Pablo Isasmendi, Plant Manager for Guardian
Industries UK. “We constantly look for new ways
to innovate and improve the float glass process
and this demonstrates to the entire industry
that there’s a viable way to reduce energy
consumption and carbon emissions from the
float glass manufacturing process.”
As a result of this investment, Guardian not
only will be producing some of the most energy-
efficient coated glass products available, it
also will reduce its carbon footprint, making
Guardian glass the smart choice now and for the
future.

Quickslide has recently invested in the glass
unit manufacture element of the business
to ensure its customers continue to get the very
latest products that offer exceptional thermal
performance.
Quickslide now uses soft coat glass in all of its
product including sliding sash windows, allowing
them to offer an ‘A’ rating as standard, and an
‘A+’ as an upgrade. Customers will benefit from
the switch as the company now has full control
over the quality of the finished product, as well as
reducing the cost of manufacture.
The Brighouse-based vertical slider specialist has
built up a loyal following of satisfied customers
over 10 years while manufacturing units using
Pilkington K hard coat glass. Soft coat alternatives
have been available for a while now, but these
were historically outsourced to a local supplier.
Michael Connor, Quickslide’s Managing Director,
explained that supplying customers with the best
available product has always been the company’s
main priority. “Even though our standard VS
window was ‘B’ rated previously, the industry
mind-set had shifted towards soft coat being
the standard, and we didn’t feel it was right for
Quickslide to deviate away from that,” he said.
However, coming from 10 years of hard-coat glass
processing, Quickslide didn’t want to switch to
soft-coat processing before being fully prepared.
“We trialed the soft coat glass process for
three months before we introduced it in to our
mainstream manufacturing. This period ensured
that we had learned as much about soft coat glass
as possible – including its limitations, shelf life
and how to move it through a glass production
line, all of which are very different from hard coat
glass,” Michael said.
Quickslide now uses Pilkington KS, which is
the most recent soft coat glass on the market,
using the latest coating technology. “Quickslide’s
relationship with Pilkington spans well over a
decade and in that time they have been one of our
very top performing suppliers so it made perfect
sense to use their product,” Michael explained.
“Defaulting to Pilkington KS has resulted in
savings, simplified glass purchases, and brought
full control of glass manufacture in house. As
a result, our customers will reap the benefits
including getting an A rated window as standard.”

GUARDIAN SUNGUARD® GLASS SOARS & SWOOPS
ON A NUMBER OF EUROPE’S MOST ICONIC BUILDINGS
T
hey may not know it by brand name or manu-
facturer, but millions of people across Europe
for years have admired, peered through and
benefited from the special properties of a certain
family of glass products.
From London and Prague to Istanbul and Stockholm,
and from soaring skyscrapers and shopping malls, to
modern post offices and luxury hotels, the Guardian
SunGuard® SuperNeutral® series of solar protec-
tion glass has helped to create an impressive array of
modern, functional and comfortable buildings.
Combining a high natural light transmission with a
very high solar protection, SunGuard SN products
offer a great neutral look that can also help to save
energy consumption by reducing the need for artifi-
cial light, as well as cooling in hot seasons and heat-
ing in cold seasons.
By opting to install Guardian ExtraClear® glass with
SunGuard coating, leading architects and builders
have provided some of the most spectacular build-
ings in Europe with a neutral appearance, adding vital
functionality while allowing the architectural splen-
dor of the structures to shine through.
Take, for instance, London’s 225-metre-high, 52-sto-
rey Leadenhall skyscraper. Popularly known as “The
Cheesegrater” for its distinct, wedge-like design.
The building, located at 122 Leadenhall Street in the
City of London’s financial district, was designed by
renowned architect Richard Rogers of Rogers Stirk
Harbour + Partners. Construction began in 2010 and
the tapering towernow sits across from another of
Rogers’ iconic buildings – the Lloyds of London head-
quarters.
Fabricated completely off site, the Leadenhall Build-
ing uses a unitised, double-skin façade that clads over
14,000 square metres of the building. China-based

Yuanda Ltd. manufactured the uni-
tised system, and a number of IGU
manufacturers in China also made
the glazed units. The double-skin
façade uses several Guardian
glass options, including SunGuard
SuperNeutral SN62/34, SN51/28
and SN40/23 in the outer skin and
Guardian ClimaGuard® Premium
Low E on the inner skin. Guardian
LamiGlass® 6.8 and 8.8 was also
used as well as various coloured
interlayer laminates to help give
the building some of its unique
character.
In Prague, in the Czech Republic,
is the Florentinum office-retail
complex. Penta Investment’s first
property development project in
the country, it is located on the
site of the former Czech print-
ing house Ceska Typografiein the
city’s historical centre. With a total
investment of about €200million,
construction work took place in
several stages over the past three
years. For much of the façade of
the project’s 49,000 square metres
of office space and 7,500 square
metres of retail space, Penta
selected Guardian SunGuard SN
40/23.
The glass’ multifunctional coating
reduces the need for artificial light
and offers excellent solar protec-
tion and thermal insulation,which
played a role in the project’s
multiple awards. The Florentinum
has earned the U.S. Green Building
Council’s LEED Platinum Award,
the highest possible green building
certification. It also won, among
other honors, the 2014 Central
& Eastern European Real Estate
Quality Award for “best office de-
velopment” in that region.
And then there’s the landmark
Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel &
Conference Center, the Turkish
city’s largest hotel, in its Sisli dis-
trict. The hotel is adjacent to the
former Bomonti Beer Factory, an
iconic building of significant herit-
age in its own right, which is being
restored to become the focal point
of a new visitor hub with extensive
entertainment, dining and retail
facilities, plus a museum and arts
center.
Since the hotel’s opening in 2013,
guests have been able to look
through Guardian SunGuard SN
50/32 glass and see spectacular
views across the European border
to Asia. This Hilton ranks as one of
the 10 largest city hotels in Eu-
rope.
