3rd lesson locus_of_revelation_
1. Objectives:
1.) Define the meaning of Revelation
2.) Elaborate on the means by which God
communicates of Himself
3.) Celebrate God’s goodness through
shared prayers
3. “Divine revelation is God’s personal
loving communication to us of who He
is and His plan to save us all in His love.
It is God’s reaching out to us in
friendship, so we get to know and love
Him.” (CFC101)
“All revelation is symbolic.” (R. Haight)
“Revelatory symbols are those which express and
mediate God’s self-communication.” (A. Dulles)
4. But what must be
the place of
God’s divine
revelation?
6. “Jesus Christ is the decisive, unrepeatable
and unsurpassable `locus’ of divine
revelation”
-Karl Barth
7. Karl Barth’s Theology
-Revelation then, in Barth, is a dynamic event and not
a natural phenomenon. This revelation is
communicated in 3 primary
mediums:
a.) Jesus Christ
Jesus is the self-revelation of the triune God and
thus to know Jesus is to know God
(Hart, 2000: 47)
8. HOW?
Jesus is both the elected and the elector, the subject
and object of divine election. Therefore the
justification of all humanity is not to be found in
the history of individual persons but in the
history of the God-man, Jesus Christ
(Hart, 1999: 59)
9. Karl Barth’s Theology
-Revelation then, in Barth, is a dynamic event and not
a natural phenomenon. This
revelation is communicated
in 3 primary mediums:
b.) Scripture
-God’s revelation has started in the stories
of the key persons (Abraham, Kings,
Prophets) of the Old Testament and being
fulfilled in Christ in the New Testament
-it becomes the sacred record and witness
of God’s unfolding of Himself
10. Karl Barth’s Theology
-Revelation then, in Barth, is a dynamic event and not
a natural phenomenon. This revelation is
communicated in 3 primary mediums:
c.) the proclamation of the ecclesia
-Greek “ekklesia” meaning, the
gathering of people.
-as all people are justified in
faith by
Christ, all people gain the title
“Chosen People of God” being
the ELECTED PEOPLE of God through Christ.
