Penalties
Plagiarism: 1st
Offense- A student who plagiarizes will
receive a failing grade (“F”) in the course. In
addition, the student will be required to complete a
remedial seminar on plagiarism. Failure to do so will
result in an automatic 2nd

Offense: A student who plagiarizes a
second time will be dismissed from the program of
study, and will not be allowed to enroll in any other
program in the College of Education and

“But my professor won’t know”
Professors will know. Professors are equipped
with ways to detect plagiarism.
Blackboard SafeAssign is used to detect plagiarism
by comparing your work to outside sources, the
Internet, and other students.
“Other students” includes both present and past
students at this university and others nationwide.
Even if your assignment was not submitted on
SafeAssign, your professor has the option to run it
through the SafeAssign protocol using a direct
submission.
Reasons Students Plagiarize
Students:
See it as a shortcut to completing an assignment.
Lack original ideas due to a variety of reasons, most
often, failure to do the work needed to complete an
assignment.
Fail to manage time wisely and complete
assignments prior to deadlines.
Lack understanding of expectations and fail to seek
clarification.
Are sometimes just dishonest and lack integrity.
Resources
The librarians at Houston Cole Library can be
helpful in finding resources and showing you how to
cite them using APA 6th
Ed. Style.
Purdue Online Writing Lab at
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
If in doubt, ask specific questions to your professor,
recheck the syllabus, clarify the assignment.
